Chapter 36: Visiting Her Grave
Chapter 36: Visiting Her Grave
"Sorry, Alex... I promise I won’t text you again."
After she answered him calmly, Aurora turned her gaze back to the road ahead, remaining silent the entire way, just like him, who was driving in silence.
The atmosphere was too quiet. Almost eerie. After sitting beside him for a few more minutes, she gradually began to feel uncomfortable.
Her gaze unintentionally fell on the music player. She felt the urge to play some music, but once again, she worried he might sulk.
However, after gazing at the street ahead for a few more minutes, Aurora suddenly felt like lightning struck her. She knew where this car was headed: Pine Hill.
’No way! Alex wanted to visit his parents’ house?’ Aurora’s hands tightened around her bag. She felt anxious about meeting her father and Alex’s parents.
’Wait, Alvin said my dad isn’t home, right? He’s on leave? Yes, yes... he is...’ Aurora felt somewhat relieved knowing she wouldn’t have to see her father.
It’s not that she didn’t want to meet him, but it would be shocking if she suddenly cried and hugged Thomas Moon. She better avoid seeing him for now.
As they neared Pine Hill, Aurora felt her tension growing. She glanced at Alex, who remained focused on the road ahead.
Unable to contain her curiosity any longer, Aurora asked as innocently and naively as possible to cover her suspicion.
"Alex, is this the way to your house?" She asks, pretending not to know the route to his home.
Aurora continued speaking when she noticed his hesitation in responding.
"This area looks beautiful but is too far from my campus. Commuting here daily would be a hassle... And I heard taxis aren’t allowed in your estate complex." Her voice was low as if she were speaking to herself.
"No. We are not going to my place. We’re headed to Graystone Private Cemetery," Alex responds calmly. Still, Aurora feels as if lightning has struck her.
Her heart races as she realizes that Alex is taking her to her final resting place—her grave.
’Oh, my Lord! Why did he bring me there? Does he suspect I’m Rory? Is that why he wanted to test me? To show me my grave?’
A chill runs down Aurora’s spine at the thought. But a moment later, she dismisses the idea. It’s impossible; Alex knows about it unless he has a sixth sense.
After suppressing her shock, she gazes at the sky outside. It is nearing darkness, and the sun is about to dip below the horizon.
She begins to believe what Alvin told her—that Alex has never missed visiting her grave. He comes here every day just to talk to her.
Aurora calmly looked away, hiding her surprise and curiosity about Alex’s strange behavior. She tried to avoid talking to him.
When Aurora thinks Alex will ignore her, she is mistaken. Shortly after, Alex starts a new conversation. "I hear you’re majoring in computer science at Arcadia University. Is that true?" he asks.
"Yes, I am..." she replies, glancing at him.
"Hmmm. Maybe you know my cousin, David Morrison?"
"David Morrison? Of course. He’s my classmate. I knew you and David might be related. I just discovered that he’s your mother’s nephew."
"Yeah, he is," Alex replied briefly.
Once more, silence filled the car.
Alex found it difficult to initiate a conversation with Aurora. He was unsure how to start.
Aurora also felt she didn’t want to engage him in conversation—not because she didn’t wish to, but because she was afraid of revealing her true identity.
At that moment, she simply wanted to minimize her interaction with him. However, something worried her, and she had no choice but to voice her concern.
"Alex, I don’t want David to learn about our relationship." Aurora stared at him, waiting for a response. However, Alex didn’t reply immediately. Instead, she noticed his brow furrow slightly.
Aurora already expected Alex’s response without waiting for him to respond. Worry gradually seeped into her mind; if David learned she had married Alexander Graystone, the whole class would probably discover.
What worries her is that if the other girls in her class discover she married Alexander Graystone, she will become a target for all the single or otherwise ladies in her faculty.
"I’m really sorry, but hiding our relationship from David is impossible because you’ll soon meet my parents. If my mother learns that you are in the same uni as David, she might ask him about you," Alex explained.
Aurora could picture the meeting with his parents happening, but she didn’t expect him to arrange it so soon.
Just thinking about the meeting makes Aurora feel dizzy, like she has vertigo.
Sensing Aurora’s unease, Alex quickly turned to her and said, "But rest assured, I’ll make sure David doesn’t discuss it with anyone outside. So, no one else will know about us."
"Thank you, Alex," she replied.
He gave her a slight nod, but inwardly, he felt something unusual about this girl. While his ex-wives craved public attention for their marriages, he had to work hard to keep them from discussing personal matters. This girl seemed to do the opposite.
A silence settled between them, both lost in their thoughts.
...
After a few more minutes, their car stopped in the parking lot of Graystone Cemetery.
Aurora could feel her tension return as she remembered exactly where her grandfather’s grave was located—on the left side of the cemetery, visible from the car.
"Please wait here. I won’t be long," he said before stepping out of the car and walking toward Aurora’s grave.
...
Standing by Aurora’s grave, Alex placed a menthol cigarette between his lips. He slowly lights it while gazing at the name carved on the headstone.
After a period of silence, he finally spoke his thoughts.
"Why didn’t you visit me in my dream?" His voice echoed with profound disappointment. "Can you forgive me and show up in my dreams?"
Alex took a deep drag from his cigarette. He ignores the tightness in his chest as he exhales slowly.
"Are you still angry with me? Rory, seriously, do you plan to keep tormenting me?"
