Chapter 19: Finally, Talking To Alex For The First Time
Monday has arrived.
For the first time, Aurora woke up feeling relaxed and free from the urgency she had in her previous life when she was serving Alex.
Her day usually began early in the morning, giving her only a few moments to herself before she hurried to the main house to watch the chef prepare Alex’s breakfast and attend to his other needs.
Although she didn’t handle everything personally, she needed to be present to ensure everything went smoothly. At times, she would wake him up if he hadn’t yet.
But now, Aurora no longer had to manage all of that.
She enjoyed her breakfast leisurely, listening to Tina chatter about her favorite Korean dramas.
It was indeed a blissful morning.
However, their conversation took a turn when Tina suddenly recalled Aurora’s husband. She began to suspect that he was not interested in continuing their marriage. This thought troubled her, especially as she remembered the words her master had spoken before his death.
"Young Miss... You know what? I started to worry that your husband doesn’t want to continue this marriage? It’s been almost two weeks, and he still hasn’t come. He always delays or suddenly cancels..." Tina said with concern, looking at Aurora.
Aurora silently sighed deeply. Since last night, she had spent almost all her time trying to forget about Alex. Just when she managed to stop worrying about him, Tina’s question brought her concerns flooding back.
She gently placed her cutlery on the empty plate before replying to Tina.
"Isn’t that better? I didn’t plan on getting married early. I want to finish my studies and find a permanent job soon. I don’t need any man to protect me, Aunty. And you know he has already been married six times, right? Six times!"
Tina’s face suddenly turned grim as she remembered that fact. "I hope he isn’t a fat, bald old geezer. If he is, I feel sorry for you."
Aurora stifled a laugh. Alex was utterly different from what Tina believed. He was hot and handsome, and all the single women out there wanted to be his next wife despite the rumors circulating that he had already been married six times.
"I hope not..." Aurora could only pretend she did not yet know her husband’s identity. "But, Aunty, there’s no need to stress about him. If he comes to discuss our marriage, I will meet him. If not, well, it’s fine either way."
"Miss, I’m just concerned. Your father mentioned that you must remain committed to your marriage and obediently follow your husband... because..." Tina couldn’t finish her sentence when she noticed Aurora stop her.
Aurora didn’t understand why her father feared for her future, which led him to arrange her marriage to Alexander Graystone.
"Don’t worry about your promise to Dad. If that man didn’t want this marriage, I would gladly accept it," Aurora replied as she finished her breakfast and stood up from the table. "Aunty, I need to go now; otherwise, I’ll be late for my class..."
With that, Aurora left immediately. She didn’t want to discuss her soon-to-be husband, Alex.
Nevertheless, Aurora received a message from an unknown number before she could leave her apartment. Just one glance was enough for her to recognize the sender.
"A-Alex..." she swallowed hard, silently reading his brief message.
"Miss Spencer, please save my number. I will reach out to you using this number. Alex!"
Aurora stared at her cell phone screen for a moment, unsure what to do. She wanted to respond but feared he might call—she wasn’t ready to talk to him yet.
Shortly after, another text message caught her off guard.
"Are you home? I’m sending my driver to your house now. We need to talk, Miss Spencer."
Aurora gritted her teeth as she looked at her cell phone screen, feeling puzzled.
"Why now? Can you just leave me alone for a little longer? I need time to adjust to my life first!" she vented her frustration, mentally scolding Alex.
For now, she chose to ignore Alex’s text message, tucked her phone into her bag, and hurried toward Arcadia University—just a few minutes from her apartment.
Aurora arrived at the campus gate a few minutes later, but her steps paused when her phone vibrated in her bag.
She could easily guess who was calling—it was likely Alex. That man never liked to wait.
Aurora didn’t rush to answer the call; she wanted to see if Alex would give up or call her back. She smiled slightly when the call ended, relieved he hadn’t tried to contact her again.
She continued on her way to her faculty. However, just a few steps later, her cell phone rang again. She was surprised to see that Alex was calling her once more.
Taking a deep breath, she sat on the garden fence by the lake and answered the call.
"Hello, Mas—Sir..." She froze, nearly calling him "Master."
She could hear Alex clear his throat on the other end. Her heart tightened as she clenched her hand around the phone, waiting for him to speak.
"Miss Spencer, I believe you received my text?" he asked. His voice was calm, but Aurora could sense the urgency behind it.
"Yes," she replied shortly.
"Good! Miss Spencer, there’s something we need to discuss. I’ll have my driver pick you up at your apartment." His authoritative tone made Aurora feel like she was speaking to her master.
"Sir, may I ask you something?"
"Just call me Alex, Miss Spencer," he insisted.
"Okay, but you also need to call me Aurora."
Silence enveloped the other end, leaving Aurora puzzled. Was the call still connected? She glanced at her phone screen. "Hello, Mr. Alex? Are you still there?"
"Yes!"
"Are you the husband my father arranged for me to marry?" she asked, pretending not to know.
"Why do you ask? Didn’t your father mention who I am?" Alex’s confused voice came through.
Aurora let out a deep sigh. She couldn’t remember if her father had ever mentioned his name.
