Chapter 18: The Coincidence Made Him Confused

At Green Hills Complex.

Alex hurried to his office and searched for the file on his desk but found nothing. The desk was tidy, except for a gift for Aurora. He couldn’t bring himself to move it.

’Did I move the file somewhere else?’ he wondered.

He was about to call Alvin when his eyes were drawn to the drawers beneath the desk.

Nervously, he opened one of the drawers and widened his eyes when he saw a black folder marked "Confidential."

Taking his time, Alex opened the folder and walked to the seating area, where he sat on the black sofa.

After settling in, he sighed deeply and began to read the document.

He first noticed a photograph of a young woman with long, ash-gray hair; her eyes appeared mesmerizing.

Looking at the picture, he felt odd, as if the girl were staring back at him.

He quickly closed his eyes to dismiss the foolish thought that the picture was alive.

"Focus, man!" Alex reminded himself.

A soft laugh escaped his lips as he took the picture and examined it closely.

The longer he looked, the more he noticed that the girl’s facial features resembled Aurora’s.

Instantly a chill ran through his veins.

"Why does this young woman remind me of Rory? Am I losing my mind? Am I going insane?"

Alex concealed the picture behind the paper.

After setting aside his thoughts, he focused on the document and read through the girl’s profile.

Name: Aurora Spencer

Age: 22 years old

Education: Final semester at Arcadia University, Faculty of Computer Science

Address: White Tower Apartments, 15th Floor

Despite his surprise at what he had just read, Alex continued reading the profile’s information.

Instantly, he remembered Mr. Spencer’s expectations for him in this marriage.

He took a deep breath and placed the paper on the coffee table. He felt puzzled, unsure whether to contact her now or wait.

Leaning back on the sofa, Alex gazed at the chandelier hanging from the ceiling. His mind was occupied with countless thoughts racing through it.

He was supposed to meet her soon to finalize the marriage and bring her home; however, he hadn’t fulfilled his promise to Mr. Spencer.

Over the past two weeks, he had been too busy with work to contact her.

Today, he had to bury someone important in his life; his mind and heart were entirely focused on her.

However, the fact that the girl shared the same name as Aurora was enough to confuse him.

"How could they have the same name?" This coincidence puzzled him.

He closed his eyes, trying to set aside all his thoughts about Aurora Spencer.

Soon after, Alex felt his cell phone vibrate.

He opened his eyes again and stared at the ceiling for a moment before taking out his phone. He noticed a text message from Alvin:

"Sir, have you found the folder? It is in a black folder and the only folder with a ’Confidential.’ Label on its cover."

Before Alex could reply, another message from Alvin came in:

"This is Miss Aurora’s phone number; perhaps you would like to call her. Have a good rest, sir."

Alex stared momentarily at the phone number on the screen before saving it and typing her name.

His hand halted after typing "Aurora." He deleted the name and replaced it with "Miss Spencer."

"Master, it’s me..." A male voice faintly echoed from the door, distracting Alex just before he was about to call Aurora Spencer.

Frowning, Alex looked toward the door and told the man to enter.

Martin stepped into the room with a grim expression, and once again, Alex felt the heartache of losing Aurora.

Seeing Martin reminded him of Aurora. As the second-in-command in the household, Martin had assisted Aurora in managing the entire property.

With Aurora gone forever, Martin would naturally need to take over her responsibilities. Although Alex struggled to accept that Martin was now stepping into Aurora’s role, he knew he couldn’t avoid it. This man would be the one to assist him from now on.

"What is it, Martin?" Alex asked as he rose from his seat. He removed his black suit and handed it to Martin. Then, slowly unbuttoning his black slim-fit shirt, he walked toward the bathroom.

The painful feeling in his chest intensified as if hellfire were burning inside him upon returning to this house. He needed a cold shower to soothe himself from this nameless fire.

"Master, your dinner is ready," Martin answered, lowering his gaze and stepping a few paces away from Alex.

Stopping before entering the bathroom, Alex turned to Martin, a deep line forming on his forehead.

"I don’t have an appetite, Martin. Please don’t prepare anything tonight, and don’t bother me; I want to be alone..." Alex paused, breathing in fresh air to ease the suffocating feeling in his chest.

"And please clean Aurora’s house. Only your trusted people should enter that place," Alex instructed.

Martin grew even gloomier when he accepted that order. He was still mourning Aurora’s death. "Yes, Master..." he answered weakly.

Alex stayed quiet but motioned for Martin to leave him alone before continuing to walk. He shut the bathroom door behind him and felt the nameless fire consuming him.

As he removed his clothes, he whispered weakly, "Stupid Rory, I command you to visit my dreams tonight. I will never forgive myself if you don’t come to see me. I will always... blame myself for what happened to you!"

The cold water flowed over his head and drenched his entire body, yet it failed to wash away the fire burning inside him. He still felt intense anger toward himself, continually blaming himself for the accident involving Aurora.

Even after he left the bathroom, the shadow of Aurora lingered in his mind.

He picked a cigarette from the table and walked out onto the veranda.

Standing in the darkness, he lit the cigarette. As he inhaled it deeply, he was hoping that smoking it would bring Aurora back to scold him. She had always hated him when he smoked and warned him about the addictive dangers of nicotine.

However, after smoking a few cigarettes, he still saw no sign of her presence.

Helplessly, in his mind, he began pleading with God to bring Aurora back to him!
