Chapter 145: Key Matters
Chapter 145: Key Matters
The revelation came suddenly, as it usually happens with revelation. Admittedly, Kevin had already had Don Alston as a suspect in his mind, but he still lacked a clear motive for the actions of a young driver. There were still some facts left unconnected in Moore’s mind. Everything was based on intuition rather than logic.
Intuition is important, but it is logic that finds the evidence needed for an arrest. Intuition gives direction, but logic provides the course.
Kevin Moore had no idea if Don Alston actually killed Rita. He had no evidence, but it was not the evidence that served as the basis for the investigation, the investigation was to bring evidence, and the third driver of the Fergus Stables had become, in Moore’s eyes, a man to be carefully looked at.
Excitedly, Kevin stormed into the room where Sullivan and Denning were in office, and they were both almost dragged into the check-in room.
"Hey professor, what are you so excited about?" Sullivan asked jokingly. But the lieutenant’s eyes sparkled with curiosity. Moore wasn’t one to get excited easily.
"Let me tell you a story. It is purely hypothetical, but ... "
Kevin’s eyes flashed, letting both policemen understand that this story wasn’t going to be a fairy tale or a philosophical tale, but something that might actually interest them. Professor Moore apparently knew something and wanted to share information with them.
"Speak," Sullivan ordered, from a comfortable position.
"There are two young men," Kevin began. "Let’s call one of them A and the other B. A and B have known each other for many years and are heterosexual. One day, A discovers that B is having an affair with C, who is a man. Not only does he discover this fact, but he also witnesses the sexual act between them. There is curiosity, fascination and maybe even obsession in his head. B ceases to be a colleague, turns into an object of desire, and A sexually assaults B. The assault is interrupted, which only adds to A’s frustration, but he desires a man. Meanwhile, B becomes unavailable. And A uses a prostitute who agrees to anal sex. The prostitute takes advantage of A’s weakness and tricked him into extracting information about B and C’s romance. C is famous and a scandal can ruin his life, so the prostitute starts blackmailing him. However, there is no proof of an affair because she knows about it from A. C refuses to pay. That same evening, the prostitute is killed. The prostitute, however, spoke of some recording that would be evidence. What is this recording? Where did she get them? Had stolen them from A, or had she made them herself, while A, drunk, was indulging in passion? If the prostitute had a video compromising A, a new suspect appears. And he could be blackmailed too, right? What if A still cannot cope with the discovery that he is sexually attracted to B? What if the fascination continues and turns into obsession? A wants B, but B is with C. C is therefore an obstacle for A to get B, but because C is also an obstacle for A in his professional career. For A, eliminating C is a professional and private profit. What do you think about it? "
"I got a headache from your argument," Sullivan complained, "but what you’re saying is not stupid at all. C, it’s Paxton, right? "
Kevin nodded.
"Then A it will be ..."
"Don Alston" added Paul Denning. "He himself confirmed that he had contacts with Rita. This is confirmed by the people at the bar where she worked and the motel staff. From the few photos shown, they chose Alston. "
"That’s right, he is," Kevin confirmed. "I found out from an eyewitness that Alston attacked Paxton’s lover. The case did not go to the police ... "
"Wait a minute." Lieutenant Sullivan raised his hand. "Do I understand that Steve Paxton is having an affair with a man?"
"I don’t know if it’s an affair," said Kevin Moore, "but yeah, Paxton is in a relationship with a man."
"With Lambert?" Denning suddenly asked. "Lambert confessed to being gay."
Kevin looked at him in surprise. Jack did not tell him that he had revealed his orientation to the police.
"No," Moore assured him firmly. "The threat was about a Mechanic, so it’s someone from the staff."
"Do you know for sure or are you guessing?" Sullivan asked.
"I know for sure. I know Paxton’s boyfriend. He has no idea about the whole thing. He is completely beyond suspicion and is even useless as a witness."
Kevin felt Sullivan’s gaze penetrating him. However, he did not feel bad under his influence. Martin was clean and shouldn’t have been considered in this case at all.
"Okay, we can skip it for now," the lieutenant agreed. He probably understood that Moore wanted to protect this person.
Kevin thanked him with a look. Meanwhile, Sullivan frowned.
"Wait a minute, is it my mind or are you suggesting Alston as a suspect in two cases, including the one we’re not investigating?"
"That’s right," Moore confirmed. "There is no official criminal investigation into what happened on the track, but if we look at the situation, we can get a fuller picture or... see details. Don’t say you aren’t tempted to look closely at these incidents. "
"We won’t get permission for that ..." he recalled, shaking his head.
"But if we find a link to these two things ..."
"To three cases," said Denning. His colleagues looked at him more closely. "Alston accidentally found himself there when Paxton was attacked. But was he really there by accident? He confessed to hearing the boys planning revenge, but claims he didn’t put the facts together, so he could not warn Paxton. Was that really the case?"
Lieutenant Sullivan shook his head.
"We’re not gonna get anything out of this. Even if we wanted to put it under ’complicity by concealment’, it would be practically impossible to obtain evidence. "
"But he will give us and the prosecution a good picture of his character," noted the young policeman.
"What, are you already building a case to win in court?" Sullivan mocked, but there was respect in his voice. "Shouldn’t you leave some work to the prosecution?"
"Why?" Denning smiled innocently. "It’s more fun this way."
"All right," the lieutenant agreed. "We’ll take care of all three things. If it turns out that Alton is involved in all three, we’ll beat the shitty boy up to the end of his life! Okay, we will divide the work this way ... "

Martin felt incredibly excited. This day was so full of impressions for him that emotions almost could not contain in his chest. And the best was still ahead of him!
Today Steve is finally out of the hospital!
Martin really wanted to accompany him on his discharge, but Karl firmly was against him to do so. There was way too much work in the stable, especially since a new car was on its way. Martin had to calmly get used to changing his role to being a driver, and they did not have time for that, so the boy had to undergo accelerated, intensive training under the supervision of Allen and Lambert. At this point, Martin was no longer a loose part of the mechanics team, but a serious third driver. With the new position came new duties and new responsibilities.
Martin was really disappointed and made no attempt to hide it. However, Karl gave him one more argument that forced the boy to obey - the hospital was still besieged by journalists. Unfortunately, not all of them wore jackets with the name of the station they were working for. Steve will be smuggled out of the hospital silently to avoid the camera lens. However, if someone takes a random photo of him, even with an ordinary smartphone, and puts them in the network, how will they explain the presence of the third (actually fourth) driver of the Fergus Stable at the discharge? At this point, Martin’s face is publicly unknown, but that could change in a few days and how will they explain themselves then? Steve currently needs a peaceful recovery, not a media campaign.
Karl was right, of course, and Martin looked down regretfully. He understood the whole situation, but he had a right to be a little sad.
At that moment, Walton held out a hand in which he was holding a plastic card.
"Take it," Karl announced. "Steve will be staying at the hotel for a while. In the same apartment as ... You won’t have a problem meeting him in this room, huh? "
"No, none," assured Martin in surprise. "But why in a hotel?"
"You haven’t seen the burrow where Steve currently lives. He would probably have had sepsis on the first day. He can’t live with you, because the media would eat you up and Steve should be a little healthier to find a new apartment and move. For now, he has to rest in comfort, so I’ll put him in a hotel. This is the key to his room... "
