Chapter 31: The New Dowry (3)_1
Chapter 31: Chapter 31: The New Dowry (3)_1
As for those who tried to barge in under the name of a mistress, she also believed that Glades Horne and Julia Bluen would join hands to fend off any such person and protect their marriage.
"Thank you, Grandma."
Glades Horne and Julia Bluen expressed their gratitude at the same time.
"Mmm."
The elderly lady nodded.
After the words of advice had been spoken, the two families began to discuss the wedding arrangements again.
Since the wedding was to be held in just six days, everything that needed to be canceled was taken care of. As for any confusion from the outside world, the families decided not to offer any explanation.
Seeing joy on everyone’s faces, James Horne quietly left the hall and went outside to the Courtyard. He wandered along the concrete path in the garden. He didn’t know why he felt compelled to escape from the house.
Was it because he no longer wanted to see his older brother’s rare display of tenderness, or because he didn’t want to see Julia Bluen’s beautiful, oval-shaped face?
Reaching the edge of the huge outdoor swimming pool in the Courtyard, James Horne stopped. He stood by the water’s edge, his brooding eyes locked on the clear water, lips pressed tightly together, hands stuffed in his pockets, his expression a mixture of iciness and gloom.
"Your beloved older brother is about to become someone else’s husband. What’s the use of lurking here and glaring at the swimming pool? If you have the guts, kill Julia Bluen! Or steal her away and make her yours!" A cold, mocking voice suddenly came from behind him.
James Horne didn’t turn around; he knew from the voice it was Adele Horne.
Adele Horne walked up beside him. They stood together, gazing at the clear, emerald swimming pool as she taunted, "Well? Find anything interesting?"
Turning his head, James Horne glared darkly at his half-sister—who had always looked down on him and never once called him ’brother’—and coldly responded, "I don’t understand what you mean."
With a cold snort, the scorn in Adele Horne’s eyes intensified.
"If you want to deceive yourself, I have no objections. But I really despise that vixen Julia Bluen, that bitch..." Adele’s words stopped abruptly as James Horne swiftly grabbed her wrist, pulling her close. His cold, handsome face leaned down, emanating a bone-chilling iciness. Although his features resembled Glades Horne’s, Adele found this brother of hers far too gloomy, lacking the noble, princely aura their eldest brother exuded.
"Orlando Evans is the real vixen, the real bitch! She’s a disgrace to her privileged background!" James Horne’s icy breath fanned across his sister’s face; he despised hearing her insult Julia Bluen. "And anyone who associates with a bitch is no better!"
His underlying meaning was clear: he was insulting this capricious princess as well.
"James Horne!" Adele Horne, seething with anger, forcefully shook off his large hand and hissed, "Who do you think you are? What right do you have to criticize my friends? Let me tell you, in the Horne Family, Orlando Evans has more status than you! If Big Brother didn’t still show some concern for you as his sibling, you’d be worse off than a servant. Hmph! No good deed goes unpunished. Just you wait! When Julia Bluen completely captures Big Brother’s heart, don’t you dare get jealous!"
After her tirade, Adele Horne ignored the increasingly thunderous expression on James Horne’s handsome face and turned, walking away haughtily.
James Horne’s face was grim, his hands clenched into fists, a chilling aura emanating from his entire being.
「Tibet」
The snow had stopped, but the wind had not.
A vast expanse of white stretched out, seemingly merging heaven and earth.
Ruby Bluen, wrapped in Marcel Horne’s thick military greatcoat, stood on the covered walkway in front of Marcel’s dormitory, gazing out at the world beyond the Military Camp.
The piercing wind howled relentlessly.
Even though it was only early autumn, the soldiers had already donned their thick winter clothing.
Meanwhile, in the southern T City, it’s the season of crisp, pleasant autumn weather right now, she thought.
She had been in Tibet for a few days now, and her altitude sickness had started to improve.
The soldiers, who viewed her as a potential wife for their officer, were extremely friendly towards her. Many young soldiers would come to chat with her, explaining the local customs and, naturally, also speaking of the hardships of their military training.
Although the soldiers spoke of their experiences in an understated manner, their faces resolute, showing unshakeable courage in the face of any hardship, she could still glean the extent of Marcel’s suffering from their words, and her heart couldn’t help but ache.
Having come to Tibet herself, she now truly understood the unpredictable weather of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the arduous life of those stationed here. But looking at this Military Camp, at so many soldiers, she felt an even deeper appreciation for the profound dedication of these servicemen. They silently endured every storm, every trial, all the loneliness, solely to defend their country’s borders.
"To join the army and defend the nation—a youth spent without regrets!"
That was something Marcel Horne had said to her when he first enlisted. Back then, she hadn’t been able to understand it, thinking he was just using it as an excuse to avoid her. Now, however, she was beginning to understand.
Suddenly, a plane ticket was thrust in front of her.
"This is a plane ticket back to T City. The flight is tomorrow afternoon at three o’clock. I’ll arrange for someone to take you to the Military District shortly. It’s not too far from the airport. The Military District has cars; they’re fast, so you’ll be able to make your flight tomorrow afternoon," Marcel Horne’s cold, somber voice sounded from beside her.
Ruby Bluen’s body stiffened.
The moment she had dreaded most, the thing she feared above all, had finally arrived, unceremoniously.
Marcel Horne was trying to send her away! To send her back to T City!
He knew perfectly well she had run away from her wedding for him, yet he still wanted to send her away! Hadn’t her confession been clear enough? The man she loved wasn’t Glades Horne; it was him, Marcel Horne!
"Take the ticket." Marcel Horne thrust the plane ticket into her hand, giving her no chance to utter a single word before turning and coldly walking away.
"Marcel Horne, I won’t go!" Ruby Bluen shouted at his retreating figure. She then forcefully tore the plane ticket Marcel had shoved into her hand into shreds and scattered the pieces from the upper floor down to the area below. Marcel had just reached the bottom of the stairs when the scraps of paper fluttered down around him like snowflakes.
This was her way of expressing her fury!
She had already taken such a drastic step, fleeing her own wedding for him, yet he still showed absolutely no reaction!
Marcel Horne stopped abruptly in his tracks. He lifted his head, his indifferent, handsome face taut, his cold, somber eyes fixed on Ruby Bluen’s pretty, round face. His lips twisted as he commanded, "Come down here and pick up every single one of these scraps!"
Ruby Bluen was stunned, her pretty face instantly flushing crimson.
The Courtyard was spotless everywhere else. Only the scraps of paper she had thrown down littered the ground, so obvious, so jarring, like countless rat droppings defiling the otherwise pristine space.
