Pestilence: Rise Of The Pure Undead
Chapter 867 - 867: Scattered Movements

The lookout that noticed something was happening first was Lynn, being an archer, she naturally was amongst those who partook in watching the surroundings from the advantageous height of a tower, the battle arts she had learned and honed had been very useful in noticing undead movement, as she actually knew how to see heat, and coincidentally, most undeads were so awfully cold that she could see them like as they looked like stains that skittered around.

Naturally, after informing a sun worshipper so that the message could be passed to everyone that they should stand ready for something to occur, she herself went and gathered the quartet.

"So… Undeads have spread out in small numbers all over the place, and some of them are heading toward the western portion?" Eppie put it in simple terms, as the archer's explanation skills were not the greatest.

"Exactly! I guess they are trying to split our attention, but we can't just tell what their goal is from just this" Lynn added.

"Isn't it just passing through the west so that they can set down a base or something in the north? If they do that, they'll be able to attack from two opposite directions at the same time and force us to split our forces to deal with them" Cassi didn't think too deeply about it and just went with the most obvious possibility.

As per usual, Tahnee just observed the discussion from the side, not participating even with just a nod.

"That's probably something they'll try to achieve, sure, but spreading out into small groups for that purpose? If they really just want to get to the north, they would be better off just forcing passage by using their overwhelming numerical advantage, so surely, they at least have something else in mind!" the mage rubbed her chin.

"I feel that trying to think hard about it is exactly what they want, they have been doing random stuff and making questionable strategic choices since the very beginning, I wouldn't put it past them that they don't even have any specific plan and are just trying to see how we react" the archer said her piece.

The quartet just thought in silence for a few minutes, standing not very far from the edge of the barrier.

"Personally, I think they are simply trying to lure us out to kill us" all four young women turned their heads to look at the person who had spoken up.

"Miss Latir-e-se" Eppie politely greeted the masked death hunter, who simply raised one hand.

"No need for honorifics- I just wanted to share my own thoughts" the ghoul huntress, dressed in white, flowing robes, despite being completely covered up and obscured, including her face, it was hard to not imagine Latir-e-se as beautiful considering how nice her voice sounded.

Seeing that no one in the quartet was saying anything, the huntress figured that she should just keep on speaking.

"Think about it, we are pretty much forced to take action when they moved toward us, otherwise they might decide to lay waste to the realm, but they are a sneaky bunch and are always trying to switch things up, bring us into a battlefield we have not yet experienced to try and get an absolute victory, the same is true here, I believe" she explained, the four younger women drinking her words.

"If I had to guess, they want to at least go after the ones heading toward the north through the west, as frankly, we have no other choice to to intercept them as it would be catastrophic to just let them reach the north, but we have to be careful, as we naturally suspect a trap, in that case, we can't send too many people at once, but if we send only a few people, they could lose against the undeads, see what I am getting at?"

"Whatever decision we make here, it has the potential to go terribly wrong, if we do nothing, we are dooming ourselves by giving the enemy more territory to attack from, if we decide to retaliate too strongly, we might fall for a ploy and lose many people, if we decide to be conservative, it might just not be enough to do what we aim for- For all we know, all solutions are imperfect" Latir-e-se shrugged, she had dealt with more trickery from undeads than most of her fellow death hunters, ghouls tended to fall into two categories :

The powerful, monstrous kind with sharp claws, a strong bite and such…

Or the small, annoying sort that hid everywhere and would never stay around for direct fight.

In her career, Latir-e-se had encountered more of the latter variety, probably because the ghoul lord was a small one as well.

That experience had taught her to always be suspicious of everything, even the small details when dealing with the dead, they didn't think like livings did, often, they shoot themselves in the foot by being too intricate and thinking too far ahead, literally failing because they considered too many options instead of just prioritising the most obvious one.

Though, the death hunter wouldn't count too much on that here, since they were dealing with an organised army instead of just rogue undeads hiding in random caves or basements.

"What's the best thing to do, though?" asked Cassi, weapon resting against her shoulder.

"The most obvious and safest one, trust a small group of us to deal with the undeads trying to head north, but who knows, maybe someone will think of a better idea, perhaps he could just take them out from afar" Latir-e-se shrugged, she didn't really believe that they could do that as the undeads had already been pelted with projectiles so much by them, it was hard to believe they would let that happen again.

The masked huntress crossed her arms.

"Do we know exactly how many undeads are heading north? And what they look like?"

"From what I saw, there is a group of three undeads that seemed to be following the western edge of the realm, and a single undead moving much closer to the barrier, that's it, all other corpses were moving in completely different directions or areas, I have no idea what they looked like though" Lynn quickly reported, making Latir-e-se narrow her gaze.

"Quite suspicious"

Just as she said that, someone else arrived, speaking boisterously.

"No matter what trick they might have, the best solution is just to pound them into dust with brute force" wielding his hammer, Tappduur was basically exhaling flames already.

"How about we death hunters take care of the group of three, while the girls there take on the lone wolf?"

"Let's wait until we have more information and their exact positions before making any decisions" Échalas soon arrived after the demon.

It was always best to exercise some caution…
