Pestilence: Rise Of The Pure Undead
Chapter 818 - 818: Disaster

"Are we not going to chase him down?"

"We can't catch up to him easily, and powerful livings are going to cross his path soon, we better get the main plan going- And besides, I can't take off after him anyways"

"What do you mean, Frenand? You might be slower in terms of raw speed, but you can maintain your momentum in corners and tighter areas, the living wouldn't be able to do the same"

"I mean in a literal sense" the lieutenant raised his hands, and the small movement caused his gauntlets to fall apart, particles of gold emanating from the bones of his hands, small cracks forming all over the white surface.

"I see, General Loimos was right, that gold is dangerous, even with your high resistance to mana, it managed to infest you with just a few blows" Erestel commented, walking up to his fellow to observe the damage.

"To do this to a pair of hands… Truly barbaric"

Meanwhile, Sari was walking up to Irtop, and crouched to meet his gaze as the living soldier was currently sitting against a wall, trying to realign the broken bone in his arm with Ayelah's help, but the bone had been thoroughly shattered.

"We don't have much time, may you hand over the position of leader of the orderly ranks linked to this base?"

"Of course, Lieutenant Sari" he extended his hand, and the the vampiress grasped it, making her the one in charge of the base, thus allowing her to activate the protocol that had been prepared for this occasion, the undead empire was no stranger to abusing loopholes to their advantages, and the most common things to be abused were rules and conditions.

Within the variation of orderly ranks that was active for the living soldiers, Irtop had been the leader and this had granted him impressive control over the underground, but there was a protocol that had been set so that it could not be activated by a living, and instead, only by an undead, on the surface, it was a rather dire limitation as the Emerald Realm firmly rejected undeath, since conditions and the likes were rarely ever self-updating depending on the circumstances, it remained considered an insurmountable requirements, and this allowed for this protocol to be especially potent.

"You did good, Irtop, you must have been manipulating this place the entire time to prevent anyone other than the Golden Boy of getting here, I will make sure to speak of your accomplishment to General Loimos"

"Thank you, Lieutenant Sari"

And then, the protocol was activated, and everyone within the base suddenly felt weightless, nothing seemed to change for the living soldiers and undeads, but for those who had intruded upon the underground, everything changed completely.

One moment they were running through a white wall, fighting off hordes of invaders, dealing with the endless traps, or trying to find their way through an enormous maze whose structure changed every second, and in the next instant, they found themselves standing upon a bare ground, in total darkness, surrounded by everyone that had entered the hideout without authorisation, despite some of them having been separated by great distances, once the spatial distortion was gone, it turned out that the true area the hidden base had filled was only as large of a regular home.

Soon, an emerald light shone beneath the earth.

"Milo, may I ask how bad it is?"

"It's terrible, at least three undeads were able to enter the realm… I think the point of gathering spirit life was to somehow use it to change a rule of the realm, or something like that… Basically, they twisted the natural law to allow undeath to exist without them being considered corpses that are to be converted to spirit life"

"That is, indeed, terrible" Ioleznta sighed, no one seemed to be willing to say anything whilst the usually whimsical Emerald Heralds looked so strangely apathetic, but it didn't take long for them to regain their smile, and that, without any hint of hidden emotion.

"Let us go and see what we can do to prevent them from doing as they please… If they think that only they can mess with spirit life, they are gravely mistaken" Liliazin used light to open a way back to the surface, and Zilania bent the natural light casted down by their kind sun, everyone soon appearing back above ground.

Milo had expected a bit of anger, or a few moments of hesitation at least, but the emerald folks always seemed to surprise him.

This was a great loss and a disaster that they had endured, yet, the leaders of the realm did not act like that was the case…

'Do they know something?'

"Milo, you got hurt" Helena grabbed his face to get a better look at him, instantly channeling a healing spell into him.

"Don't worry, I was able to heal everything-"

"You idiot, I am not talking about physical injuries! Your soul! Your soul looks like it was nearly split in half!"

"You could have died! Why did you rush ahead all by yourself? I know that you want to protect me and the children- But you need to value your own life as well, we won't be a family if you are gone!"

Milo just stayed silent, it had been a long while since his wife had given him an earful like this.

"You big idiot…" she pulled him into a hug, and although Milo wanted to say something, he couldn't as it currently felt he was being suffocated by two pillows.

"Aww, they're so cute… Would you berate me like this if I did something stupid?" Hoffnu asked Merno, who, despite being blind, slowly turned his head toward the swordswoman.

"I would try, but we both know how it ends up when we argue about anything"

"Heheheh, what can I say? I can't help it, and it isn't a bad way to unwind some tension"

The mage sighed.

"I can't disagree on that point, but I feel that it happens a bit too often…"

"Lovebirds, stop with your rituals and hurry back in the barrier, we need to regroup and talk about what we're going to do from now on, the living soldiers could easily be managed, but undead soldiers? That's an entirely different stories, and undead elites will be severe problems" remarked Antieeld, indeed, if the powerful undeads were anything like what they remembered, the Emerald Realm would probably have to endure much more damage than before, the beasts were powerful, but would never be able to go up against organised troops of the dead.

Their first priority should probably be to further reinforce the barrier.
