Chapter 205: Shadows In The Dark
Mercy trembled, her senses momentarily severed from the realm of existence. Dora’s words jolted her back to the harshness of reality, breathing life into her once more.
"... Eh ?"
"Yes... you’re a real enigma to me... You and the hammer are the most compatible... so I need you out there... but apparently, you’re more harmless than a baby with a knife."
"...Uh? Compatible?...Compatible for what?"
Dora inhaled sharply, his gaze fixed on the vast expanse of the sky above. Moments later, he shut his eyes tightly and gave a subtle nod.
"...Yeah...Looks like...It’s a good time to use...this thing."
Yellow light emanated from his eyes once more as he swiftly snapped his fingers, causing a blinding burst of brilliance. Suddenly, an eerie growl echoed across the vast savannah, sending shivers down the spines of Lilith and Morgiana.
Iris instinctively clasped her hand over her mouth, desperately trying to suppress the urge to vomit, while Mercy stumbled and landed unceremoniously on her noble posterior. In front of them, a grotesque figure contorted on the ground, a grotesque amalgamation of flesh with veins protruding haphazardly.
The creature was drenched in blood, its body pulsating with an unsettling glow. In a horrifying spectacle, Eric had returned before their horrified gazes.
"This... should yield... a powerful... soul stone... now."
Dora’s steps faltered, his breath growing shallower with each passing moment. The watchful gazes of the other Personas bore into him, intensifying the mounting tension.
"You okay, bro? You look like an alpha male showing weakness in front of his pack of opportunistic scavengers." Sigma said.
"The difference... between you and... a mindless puppet... Do you want to know?"
"I guess no."
"So... zip it the hell up... and also screw you... It’s... just a complication... Looks like this hag... got me good... can’t deal with this... Pressure... Alpha... you take the lead on this side... I’ll be back... for Wrath."
With a final gasp, a swirling haze of violet enveloped him.
"We must no longer... lose... everything... will depend on this operation... Focus on... your missions... and don’t screw up."
He was engulfed by the mist, which crept through Alpha. The Personas cast irritated glances in his direction before exhaling heavily.
"Finally, some peace," Gamma said.
"Hey, since the evil one is gone, let’s take this opportunity to run away and be free," Sigma said while playing on the ground with Thomas’ golden head.
The tension between them grew as they debated, oblivious to the shocked stares of the girls. Suddenly, Alpha slammed his hands together.
"Alright, playtime is over. Let’s move on to the plan. Sig, Bet, let’s do this, Om and G, you do your things, and Zui, you get to the other team. Division of tasks."
"May we know who you’re calling tasks?" Sigma poked Thoma’s golden head, making it scream like a real living being.
"Please a little focus guys, we really need a win there so let’s put the odds in our hands. Sig, Bet, here we go."
The swirling purple haze intertwined with the fiery red, enveloping the trio of Personas, then exploded into a stream of vibrant yellow power.
Meanwhile, within a desolate void, Candace knelt with a chain binding her left ankle, extending endlessly into the abyss. As a gentle glow approached her, she lifted her head, with a chilling gaze filled with anger.
"There, I prefer it when you have those eyes rather than your useless pleading."
The dean’s head dropped and her fists tightened, a raspy sound escaping her lips. The presence drew near as a watchful eye fixated on her every move.
"Hm? Are you okay? You’re Sin too, so I didn’t think you’d need to eat or drink...or maybe that chain is too uncomfortable for a little lady?"
"...It’s nothing compared to what I’m used to."
"Yes, because I don’t have to move an inch to stop you."
The power surged, morphing into Dora with piercing white eyes. Candace clutched her arms, her gaze intensifying.
"I’ve been around long enough to know when something is an anomaly. You’re not just any version of Dora, I’ve come to accept that. Not the Sin, not the fake, not even a Persona. You... you’re nothing at all."
"It’s interesting how you went from refusing to call us Dora to concluding that we’re nothing. You’re a real enigma."
He knelt before her, gently lifting her chin with his finger to meet her gaze.
"But let me tell you a secret that only my mind knows: the real Dora doesn’t exist in this world...yet."
"I’ve heard this bullshit too many times. I hear everything you and the other five say. You want to kill all the Sins, don’t you? So why don’t you kill me now? I’m so tired of this, you want to confirm if we’re your target? Then kill me! Just kill me now, I won’t even fight back!"
Softly, she caressed his cheeks with a delicate punch, not able to let another tear shed. Dora stood frozen, his gaze locked on the dean before his lips parted.
"I tried. I tried to kill you many times already, but... I never got the will."
He stood up, looking at his hands.
"Something... Something in me is forcing me to not end you yet, but you won’t go away so it’s fine."
Candace ceased her resistance, her gaze quivering. Simultaneously, beyond the confines of the room, the wind whipped the crimson haze into a frenzy, as the amalgamation of Dora emerged from the devastating blast.
With eyes ablaze in a piercing yellow hue, he scrutinized the intricate lines etched upon his palms, while Gamma, Omega, and Zuri observed intently. Amongst them, the young girl struggled to conceal her insatiable desire, her mouth-watering uncontrollably.
"A fusion... with Sigma... Beta... and Alpha?... Can we review the distribution of tasks?"
The fusion Dora passed by her, his eyes fixed on the moving mass of flesh.
"Let’s not get on the bad side of whoever feeds us. For now, we better stick to the plan."
As he approached Mercy, a swirl of blue particles began to form in his hands. The young girl, overwhelmed with fear, took a step back. However, her panic caused her to lose focus on her surroundings, leading her to trip over a portion of Eric’s moving body and land near his bloodied head.
Involuntarily, she brought her hands to her mouth and retched to the side. The sensation of burning in her stomach intensified, her heart pounding so rapidly that she could almost feel it attempting to burst through her ribcage.
Dora lifted his hand, revealing the glimmer of a golden dagger that cast an eerie light across the girl’s terrified face.
"Close your eyes." One sentence and the swing fell. In that split second, a piercing cry shattered the tranquility of the savannah, echoing through the vast expanse of grasslands.
On the sandy beach, the group led by Freya stood in a semi-circle, their attention fixed on the enigmatic elf who displayed a keen interest in Eryl. The maid, her orange eyes glowing, clutched her dagger with unwavering determination. It was intriguing to witness her unwavering grip on the weapon, especially considering her being a mage.
"...You...what are you? This is the first time I’ve seen a sister with this...color."
"And I was sure that only one person in this country could speak our language."
The girl raised her eyebrows and gradually lowered her swords. She glanced at Freya and Eryl before stabbing her swords into the sand.
"One person...Hm...maybe..."
She scratched her left ear, her eyes scanning the group, and slowed towards Freya.
"Great, now what should I do? I have an execution order but...a person with this much power is a problem."
"I thought so." Eryl straightened her dagger. "Freya, be careful. These people are vicious and apparently, she knows your worth now."
The group stood guard, ready to receive the girl, but Freya suddenly stepped between them, protecting her.
"Please! Don’t do anything to her! Everyone...this mission, remember the purpose of this mission! If you attack an elf, we will definitely lose their trust. She can understand our language, she could be our only hope of making contact with Envy...I don’t care if she tries to attack me, I’m strong enough to handle it, but don’t ever touch her!"
The tension in the air was thick, almost tangible, as the team members exchanged worried glances. With each passing moment, their anxiety seemed to intensify.
Freya could feel the weight of the situation pressing down on her shoulders. She turned her back on the young elf, who had already shown signs of being opportunistic.
As she did so, a sense of unease washed over her. However, to her surprise, the elf merely stared at her back, seemingly oblivious to the opportunity that had presented itself.
Eryl, for her part, was trembling slightly, her face increasingly tense.
"...Lady Freya."
"Eryl, please."
The maid gritted her teeth, slowly lowering her weapon.
"...Freya."
The young woman let out a sigh of relief, a smile spreading across her face as she placed a comforting hand on her chest. In the background, her comrades followed, lowering their weapons as beads of sweat glistened on their faces.
"Thank you for your understanding, thank you everyone."
A finger touched Freya’s shoulder, and the elf nodded.
"Miss Fureya? I think you’re misinterpreting your friends."
Freya glanced over at her, feeling a sense of anxiety creeping in, before her gaze widened in surprise. As they stepped out from the shadows of the trees into the warm embrace of the sunlight, a new Chapter began for them.
"See...you’re not exactly the one in power here."
