Chapter 137: The Sky Brings Wisdom, And Problems
A few days had passed since Dora and Mercy’s date. The general situation had also changed for everyone. News of the growing number of monsters across the kingdom spread, and most of the emissary strongholds were wiped out as the days passed.
The demands on Candace’s team had increased, but with the risk of facing another player, she was determined to never accept without being overprepared, and therein lay the problem: they were considered adequately prepared.
Everyone knew about the wonderful Sin Avatar that had been acclaimed several days ago, and so they eagerly wanted to see him in action.
Unfortunately, none of them knew that at that moment, he posed a greater danger than the Rift.
In a small arena away from the town, serving as a training camp for emissaries, Candace’s Synthetic Rift closed.
Many emissaries, most of them former members of the student council, were catching their breath, and being treated by a medical team.
A young girl was about to treat Thomas, but the young man politely refused.
"It’s okay, I’m fine, you should start with the ones who are in the worst condition."
"Ah? Very good, but I will come back to you quickly, you must not underestimate your injuries."
He nodded and they both went their separate ways.
Behind him, Maxim groaned, because it was a mustachioed man who was healing him and out of jealousy.
"Don’t you think he’s a little arrogant? Blah blah blah, they’re in worse shape, I don’t need your help. Big mouth for someone who’s already been trashed."
"What do you mean? He’s now stronger than you again." Lisa said as she sat down on the ground."It’s because he received more soul stones than us, I feel like he is favored."
"We receive soul and elemental stones based on our contribution, you idiot... Maybe you should start scrambling."
"What? You like my ass? Haha."
Lisa looked at him with great disgust, causing him to panic.
"I... I mean, you’re talking about my ass, like, are you jealous?... I mean, tell me if you want my ass, like... uh, I mean... haha, mine is better than... than yours... or someone else..."
"Don’t talk to me, I don’t want to be associated with you."
She groaned, staring at Thomas who was approaching the dean’s bench.
Candace was sitting with a document, analyzing it with Iris. Beside her, Dora was looking at the sky, as if sleeping with her eyes open.
Candace sighed and put the document away.
"Maybe they were just mentally tired? We should give them the afternoon off and do it again tomorrow." asked Iris.
"Or maybe we should choose a town closer to the Rift so they understand it’s not a vacation!... Damn, that’s why I hate working with anyone."
"Wise words from a nobody." Dora choked.
"Keep it up and your soul won’t be the only thing suffering from a personality disorder."
"Yes, yes, great mother."
Iris laughed at their exchange and noticed Thomas behind.
The young man stood next to her but ignored her and only looked at Candace.
"Sorry, Dean, I guess it hasn’t been so good since we were helped."
The dean sighed and glanced at Iris.
"Not everyone is a genius, but at this level, there’s no point in trying."
"Perhaps, dean, but if I may, these people have something more admirable: they are all heroes, great heroes who fight for property and who have never turned their back on their people. I think it’s even better than a genius."
"Yeah, and they also die faster than a genie, so what’s the point? We’re not in a fairy tale."
Thomas smiled and looked behind him.
"That’s why they also need a genius with the heart of a hero, and I know someone with the heart and power to be like that, and once he realizes his power, he will surpass the people who don’t want to change the world, so I’m confident in our chances."
He turned his back on her and began to walk away satisfied.
Iris glanced at him and spoke in a loud voice.
"Dora, you fought a Player head-on, how would you judge him compared to all the emissaries of our kingdom?"
Thomas stopped without turning his back, Candace, with a dull expression lowered her head.
Dora looked thoughtfully at the sky again.
"The emissaries will only fight Disasters, only Disasters."
"So we have no chance against any Player?"
"There is no difference between all the emissaries and the ancient Holy Knights, and two of them were killed in a single attack. Players are reserved for Avatars... ."
Iris sighed and fixed a lock of her hair.
"Even if we dream, in the end, we still have to wake up and face reality. I don’t mind making a pact with the devil if it means saving everyone."
Thomas groaned and walked away.
"I really wish to see the faces of those who think like this in front of the families who have lost a member because of this devil."
Iris gave him one last look and turned her back on him.
Candace sighed and looked at the sky as well.
"Are you still on bad terms? I really don’t see the point now."
"We just agreed to disagree, I don’t blame him. My only priority is to end the Twilight of the Gods..."
Looking depressed, she sat down next to Dora and Candace.
"I was stupid to think I could change anything... If I had been there, I would have died... In the end, you have to blame everything on yourself... Sorry Dora."
"It’s nothing, I know what people really think of me beyond their joy, I also destroyed that boy’s life."
"... And now everyone thinks you’d do that again."
"Not would, will." He puffed out his chest and nodded, making Candace and Iris laugh a little.
They stayed like that for a moment, looking at the sky, then Iris lowered her head.
She clenched her fist on her thighs.
"If only... If only I wasn’t so weak... I hate being dead weight so much."
"What are you saying? You are the strongest among all the knights." Candace patted her on the back. "You are strong, these are just abnormalities, don’t blame yourself."
She looked up at the sky again with a bright smile.
"If you’re feeling really bad, just think that one of the strongest people in the world says that being weak isn’t a crime, You’re Iris, and that’s already amazing."
Dora, her eyes fixed on the sky, raised an eyebrow.
"Why not become a pseudo-avatar? Wasn’t that in the plan?"
Iris and Candace looked at each other and then turned to the young boy.
"What? Are you serious?" The dean frowned.
"Yes, I said an Avatar would be the only being with the power to take care of them, so why not become one?"
"... Kid, I thought we tried that, and it ended in a big failure."
"No, we didn’t try, we were interrupted. You are all already stronger than most Holy Knights thanks to your exposure to our spiritual pressure. If you gain the blessing of a Sin, you will be too... less strong than an Avatar, but definitely within a Player’s range.
Candace sighed and looked at the students on the ground.
"Have you forgotten the big problem? We don’t have an Avatar to get a blessing. I don’t have any blessings, the fossil is an idiot, Silva is in her world, and you consider yourself a choice? Boy, look at your chains, you are not using your power until we have no option left."
"... Then no one will fight."
Candace turned to him with an intrigued look.
"You think we can’t do anything without..."
"No one will die again."
Iris and Candace, in their sit, looked at the boy curiously.
Dora, his eyes fixed on the sky, had a smile.
"I just don’t want this to happen again. I don’t remember anything from the past year, I don’t know if I killed anyone, and I don’t understand how it all turned out... Try being in my shoes, I feel like I just woke up and people are accusing me of things. But I remember one thing, I remember Elizabeth."
The wind blew, blowing away Candace’s smile.
"Dean... I don’t know much about you, but I think your greatest feat was really being the guardian of someone like that... I’ve seen a lot, but I’ve never seen someone like her I... I remember what she did, how she fought... She could kill a Dragon by herself, she hurt a Player, for real... She was so strong and yet so kind... my biggest regret would be never to have spent more time with her... Everything would have been different if... if only... I had been able to make a pseudo-avatar of her... "
They sat in silence, Dora’s eyes turned to the sky and the other two to the ground. Candace gave a small smile as Iris closed her eyes, memories of the legend burning in her soul.
Nothing could stop such a peaceful moment, and that was exactly why...
"A giant monster is approaching the city!!!" An emissary shouted as he ran towards the training ground.
Candace, Dora, and Iris jumped on their feet with a sense of urgency.
The dean hesitated for a moment before finally speaking up.
"A giant?... Please don’t tell me..."
Iris, unable to contain her fear, trembled with anxiety as she whispered.
"A... A player?"
