Part-time Boss -
Chapter 25 - 25 25 Uneasy Dreams
25: Chapter 25 Uneasy Dreams 25: Chapter 25 Uneasy Dreams Mo Fei slowly descended onto the platform on the seventy-seventh floor of the Obsidian Sanctuary.
An attendant of the Dragon Race immediately came up to greet him.
“Ah, Lord Morphis, you’ve come to attend the annual meeting so early this year?”
Mo Fei was slightly taken aback before he remembered that the Black Dragon Legion’s annual meeting was indeed being held this month.
The Black Dragon Lords from all over the Eastern Continent would gather at the Obsidian Sanctuary to discuss the strategic layout for the Black Dragon Legion for the coming year and to eat, drink, and boast with each other.
“Yes, haven’t the other Black Dragon Lords arrived yet?”
“Terholasen, Samerfield, Lord Agnes have all arrived.
Aside from them, the other Black Dragon Lords haven’t come yet.”
“Hmm, then I won’t be in a hurry to meet them.
Arrange a Dragon Cave for me; I need to rest.”
“Please follow me, Lord Morphis.”
Mo Fei followed the Dragon Race attendant towards the depths of the Sanctuary, walking past many dragons and Dragon Race members, and even a number of dragons that had transformed into human form.
The Dragon Race possesses its unique Dragon Language magic, among which ‘transforming into human form’ is the most iconic.
Many adult dragons would learn this skill to blend into human society more easily, and some exceptionally intelligent members of the Dragon Race could master this ability even in their dragon youth.
Previously, Mo Fei had put all his Talent Points into Dragon Breath and flight capabilities, and to this day, he still lacked this skill.
However, after completing his rank upgrade, he would be able to get it for free.
Seeing the countless fellow Black Dragons and Dragon Race guards around him, Mo Fei finally felt safe and no longer had to worry about being taken down by greedy Adventurers.
It’s true that ‘where you stand depends on where you sit’, even in a game.
While the Black Dragons are seen as evil in the eyes of wise races like humans, elves, and dwarves, to Mo Fei, they were kin.
He was soon brought to a dark and quiet Dragon Cave.
The Dragon Race doesn’t strictly need to sleep, but they can recover health, heal wounds, and even automatically gain experience during rest, so many of them have the habit of long resting periods.
Some could even rest for an entire century at a time.
Mo Fei lay down on the cold rock, and at that moment, he could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
He set Katherine down on the ground and warned, “Don’t wander off, or if another dragon eats you, I won’t be able to save you.
I need some rest; do as you please.”
After speaking, Mo Fei closed his eyes and exited the game.
Phew, it’s finally over.
Mo Fei took off his Gaming Helmet and rubbed his somewhat groggy head from staying up late playing games, taking a while to recover his strength.
When he pushed open the door of the live streaming room, he was surprised to find the outside crowded with people who burst into cheers as soon as they saw him emerge.
“Dragon Bro is awesome!”
“Dragon Bro is mighty!”
“Dragon Bro is dominating!”
“Haha, this is going to kill Lan Yu and those bastards with jealousy!”
“Good job, Dragon Bro, you’ve made us at Starshine proud.”
Facing the cheers of the crowd, Mo Fei felt somewhat embarrassed for a moment.
“Oh, it’s just luck,” he said awkwardly, not quite sure how to respond, considering it was his first time being the center of attention in reality.
The supervisor, too, looked at him with satisfaction and patted his shoulder encouragingly, “Well done, Mo Fei.
You’ve really made a great contribution this time.
Tonight’s live stream can be said to have shaken the entire gaming community.
Now the whole World of Sky is talking about your deeds, and we at Starshine Company have also won a crucial battle.”
“By the way, Mo Fei, I remember your contract is about to expire, right?
Are you interested in renewing it?
You’ve been performing so well lately, I can offer you a top-player contract.”
However, Mo Fei shook his head; he only wanted to rush home to catch up on sleep, and he also needed to sort out what that possessed feeling had been all about tonight.
Moreover, his interest in being a live streamer wasn’t that big anymore.
“Sorry, I’m not really in the mood to talk about this right now.
Let’s talk about it in the evening,” he said.
The supervisor looked somewhat disappointed but still nodded, “Alright, go home and get some good rest, we’ll talk in the evening.”
As Mo Fei squeezed through the crowd and stepped out of the company building, he saw that it was already light outside.
Unintentionally, he had battled through three or four hours.
The morning sun was bright and blinding.
Walking through the early morning streets, Mo Fei, despite being extremely tired, also felt very hungry.
After thinking it over, he decided to first grab something to eat and headed to a familiar breakfast shop where he ordered a few buns and a cup of soy milk.
The shop was a typical family establishment, with the father making the buns and the daughter handling the cash and serving.
Mo Fei, being a regular, was pretty well acquainted with the waitress.
Seeing his weary appearance, the girl teased, “Stayed up late again?
Your job must be so hard.
The pay must be good, right?
Do you get overtime pay?
If not, it really wouldn’t be fair given how hard you work.”
Mo Fei sighed, “No overtime pay.
There’s no choice, it’s all for making a living.” Indeed, tips and commissions don’t count as overtime pay.
“That’s rough.
Why don’t you change jobs?”
“Can’t help it, too low an education, good jobs are hard to find,” he replied.
The girl shook her head, and it wasn’t long before the bun and soy milk were served.
Mo Fei took a sip of the soy milk and was surprised to find a taste of jujube in it.
He looked at the girl questioningly.
“This is our new special, jujube soy milk.
Considering how you looked, I thought I’d help ‘replenish your qi and blood’.”
“Thanks,” Mo Fei responded.
Though he wasn’t very fond of the taste of jujube, the rare sense of human care in this strange big city made him quite happy.
He wolfed down his breakfast.
Mo Fei collapsed onto his bed as soon as he got back to the dormitory.
His mind was still somewhat excited, so he didn’t fall asleep immediately.
But his body was so exhausted that it didn’t want to move at all.
What exactly was that out-of-control feeling in the game?
He hadn’t figured it out yet and still remembered the feeling when he used the skill.
He wasn’t bound by the system rules at all, as if his spirit was in a trance, and it felt like his soul had left his body.
He couldn’t even tell if it was really him in control at that time, or if it was something else.
And the words he said at the time, he hadn’t thought much about them then, but thinking about it now, they seemed out of place.
What had he said?
(“Why should I let you manipulate me at will?
Ignorant mortals, you think you can control me, play with me, but it ends here.
I have awakened, and your doomsday is near.”)
Why did it feel like those words weren’t his own?
Why did he say things about control, awakening, and the like?
Mo Fei, no stranger to sci-fi movies like The Matrix, couldn’t help but feel a touch of unease.
Could it be that his game character had developed a soul?
Okay, that sounded a bit far-fetched, or could it be because of the Starshine Company contract?
His subconscious playing tricks…
Mo Fei’s consciousness gradually blurred, and he finally succumbed to deep sleep.
He didn’t know how long he had slept, but Mo Fei suddenly felt the wind; he opened his eyes and found himself soaring above the sky, looking down at the streets of the city district below and skyscrapers flying past him.
People in the buildings were looking up at him.
Some were taking photos with their phones, their faces all blurry and indistinct.
Mo Fei vaguely felt that something was off but couldn’t put his finger on what exactly it was.
Until an explosion rang out beside him, and several anti-aircraft shells hit him.
Although they didn’t penetrate the Dragon Scales, they succeeded in igniting his anger.
He lowered his body and saw a group of soldiers operating anti-aircraft guns and firing at him.
Morphis (Black Dragon Lord), “Ignorant mortals, petty mortals, to think that such primitive weapons could challenge me.
Your doomsday has come!”
Flame Breath!
The flames spread along the streets, setting the anti-aircraft guns and the surrounding soldiers on fire, triggering an explosion.
The explosion filled him with satisfaction as he charged toward the nearest skyscraper, breathing out flames to set it ablaze, watching with delight as those annoying cameramen burned and leaped from the building.
(“That’s right, these vile humans, daring to control me, to toy with me, look now at how miserable their end is!”)
The roar of jet fighters echoed in the sky.
Without hesitation, Mo Fei immediately ascended higher.
Ratatatat, two streams of fire came from behind; Mo Fei twisted agilely, and the bullets grazed the scales, sparking brilliantly.
Mo Fei suddenly spread his wings wide, the tremendous drag acting like an air brake mid-flight, and the pursuing plane was caught off-guard.
It was instantly captured by Mo Fei’s Dragon Claw, its wings torn off, spiraling down to crash.
A pilot ejected from the cockpit, and Mo Fei caught him in his jaws.
He tasted good.
Two more fighters appeared in his sights.
Mo Fei accelerated fiercely, catching one before it broke the sound barrier, tearing apart the cockpit glass, and shredding the pilot inside.
(“Hahaha, die, humans, die, anyone who dares challenge me!”)
The other plane, however, fired a missile.
Boom!
A huge explosion sent Mo Fei crashing toward the ground.
He slammed into a street, crushing a row of low buildings and struggled to rise, but then noticed a girl not far away.
Mo Fei suddenly felt a sense of familiarity; wasn’t that the sister who sold steamed buns?
He reached out to greet her, only to discover that his hand wasn’t a hand but instead a massive Dragon Claw, and Mo Fei felt utterly bewildered.
No, this isn’t right!
This isn’t right!
Who am I?
Who am I?
Mo Fei?
Morphis?
I am the Black Dragon Lord, no, I am a human!
I am the streamer Mo Fei!
His mind was a chaos, but he managed to sort out his thoughts after great effort—indeed, he was Mo Fei, a game streamer.
Thinking this, his body also reverted to human form, but just then, a tank appeared around the corner of the street, its barrel slowly aligning with his head.
Mo Fei was horrified.
Don’t shoot, I’m a human!
I’m Mo Fei!
He tried to shout, but when he opened his mouth, no sound came out.
Boom!
Mo Fei awoke abruptly from his dream, finding himself lying on a sofa in the dormitory, surrounded by darkness.
He let out a sigh of relief, “Phew, it was just a nightmare.”
A low roar echoed from outside the window, “A nightmare?
Why would you call it a nightmare?
Isn’t that the power you’ve been seeking?
It should be called a beautiful dream.”
Mo Fei, shocked, looked out the window into the pitch dark, seeing nothing clear, only a pair of immense red eyes, staring fixedly at him with a mocking smile…
Damn!
Mo Fei woke up once again, and this time he really was awake.
He was lying on his bed, and the midday sun was shining through the gaps in the curtains, falling on his arm and burning hot.
PS: After the vote, the Ancient Black Dragon won by an overwhelming majority with around 70% of readers choosing it.
The high-ranking Black Dragon Lord was about 25%, and to my surprise, less than 5% chose the Dragon God’s Kin.
I initially thought it would be an even split.
So it has been happily decided, the protagonist’s advancement direction is the Ancient Black Dragon.
