Chapter 140 Meng He......

Chapter 140: Chapter 140 Meng He......

"Actually, it’s nothing too serious." An Ying noticed her daughter putting on a serious face, and began lightly, then recounted what she had experienced.

"On Monday, as usual, I was coming back from the bookstore. As I was walking downstairs, the road was a bit dark, and I didn’t notice a drunk man by the roadside. By the time I realized, he was already staggering towards me, pulling me towards the corner of the wall..."

Upon hearing this, An Yin clenched her fists and hurriedly asked, "And then?"

An Ying lowered her eyes, skipped over some details, and did her best to narrate in a calm voice, "Thankfully, our neighbors in the neighborhood are quite helpful. I only shouted a few times before someone came over. I called the police afterward, and the drunken man was taken away. I’m fine, just that in the scuffle, my foot scraped the corner of the wall and got a little scratched."

A thrilling scene was described by An Ying in just a few words. In truth, An Ying knew her daughter was very timid, but she really didn’t want her to worry!

"Are you sure you’re not hurt anywhere else?" An Yin lifted her mother’s arm carefully checking.

"Nope." An Ying was amused by her daughter’s actions and gently nudged her, "Have you had dinner?"

An Yin shook her head.

"Then I’ll make something for you."

Just as An Ying was about to stand up, An Yin pressed her firmly back onto the sofa.

"I’ll do it myself." With that, An Yin headed to the kitchen.

An Ying watched her daughter’s silhouette and suggested, "There are dumplings I made yesterday in the fridge. You could cook some of those." Saying this, An Ying wasn’t completely at ease with her daughter being alone in the kitchen, so she shuffled slowly in that direction.

When she entered the kitchen, she saw her daughter squatting down, pulling out a box of dumplings.

An Yin looked up at Ms. An with a delicate, disgruntled expression on her face, "Why did you get up again?"

"It’s nothing, just a few steps." An Ying took the dumplings from her daughter’s hand, speaking dotingly, "Every time you cook dumplings, they break, and the meat turns into porridge in the soup, let me do it!"

An Yin pouted, having no retort, as Ms. An’s words were indeed true.

"Then I’ll assist you?" An Yin stepped back, watching Ms. An hop about preparing the dumplings.

In the kitchen, An Ying deftly cleaned the pot. It would take a minute or two to boil the water, so she turned her head to her daughter, "Why didn’t you give me a heads up before coming back?"

"I wanted to surprise you, but it seems I ended up startling you instead." An Yin murmured.

"You child..." An Ying said, a smile gracing her lips, the little bit of gloom in her heart dispelled with her daughter’s return.

The dumplings were soon ready, and An Yin brought two small bowls of soup dumplings to the dining table in the living room, then helped An Ying to sit down.

An Ying didn’t have many dumplings in her bowl, but she couldn’t bear to let her daughter eat alone, so she accompanied her, even though she had already had some porridge for dinner.

An Yin ate the steaming dumplings, savoring the taste of meat and onion, a lingering aroma in her mouth. She couldn’t help but think to herself: Mom’s dumplings are the best!

An Ying ate very slowly, her gaze drifting to her daughter’s content and charming face. At this moment, she noticed her daughter’s clothing, and a hint of worry slipped into her eyes, "You feel cold easily, make sure to wear more daily and don’t catch a cold."

"Mmm, mmm." An Yin nodded perfunctorily.

An Ying watched her daughter looking like a little glutton, cheeks slightly puffed out with food, appearing utterly adorable.

Once they finished eating, An Yin volunteered to wash the dishes, and An Ying didn’t stop her.

That evening, An Yin brought her pillow and went to Ms. An’s bedroom.

Their home was quite small, with two bedrooms and a living room. The two bedrooms were next to each other; An Ying’s was smaller, with only a bed and a wardrobe, hardly any other items, making the environment clear at a glance upon entering!

An Ying wasn’t sleepy, holding a newspaper in her hand, reading intently.

She didn’t even notice when her daughter pushed open the door until An Yin called out, "Mom, I want to sleep with you," prompting An Ying to look up.

An Yin noticed that just now, Ms. An had a sort of deep affection in her gaze as she looked at the newspaper, perhaps she was mistaken, An Yin pondered this internally.

"Come, come on!" An Ying quickly placed the newspaper on the bedside table, reaching out a welcoming hand to her daughter. If it weren’t for An Yin’s usual confusion, she might have noticed that Ms. An seemed to be hiding something in her expression.

An Yin eagerly moved forward.

An Ying had already lifted a thin quilt, and after An Yin set down her pillow, she naturally lay beside her mom, tilting her head to ask, "What news were you so engrossed in that you didn’t even notice me coming in?"

"Just browsing." An Ying glanced at the newspaper, noticing the striking figure of a man on the cover. She was about to flip the paper over.

Just as An Ying reached for it, someone else grabbed it first, and An Ying felt her heart leap into her throat, her mind going blank.

An Yin’s bell-like laughter spilled from her mouth as she held the newspaper, quickly scanning it from left to right before her gaze lingered on the cover’s large characters, mumbling, "Finance newspaper, Mom, since when were you interested in finance?"

As An Yin spoke, her bright eyes fell upon the man in the suit on the cover. For some reason, though it was the first time she had seen this man, an inexplicable emotion rose in her heart, drawing her gaze to the man’s cool demeanor. Her eyelashes kept fluttering as she watched intently.

The front page of the newspaper showed a man in a black suit sitting solemnly. His eyes held a complex emotion, making it hard to guess what he was thinking. The newspaper stated that the man was in his forties, but judging by his vibrant appearance, An Yin could easily believe he was only in his thirties. On the cover, the man’s handsome features reminded An Yin of the phrase "gentle and refined".

An Ying intended to snatch the newspaper back, but seeing her daughter staring entranced at the man in the paper, her hand stiffened in mid-air, and she withdrew it. A faint trace of sorrow swept over her gentle face as she turned her head to the other side, so her daughter wouldn’t notice anything unusual.

"Finished reading?" An Ying, feeling guilty, broke the silence first.

"Yes." An Yin nodded, attracted by the large characters next to the man, which read "Meng’s". Just as she was about to make out the small text below: Meng He...

"Reading newspapers late at night strains your eyes." An Ying took the newspaper from her daughter’s hand and immediately placed it in the adjacent drawer.
