Chapter 155: Chapter 155: It’s me

Third Person POV

Natalie’s eyes widened and fear struck her heart as she looked at her husband’s angry expression that masked his features. Her eyes darted between his face and the picture that was displayed on his phone that he held up for her to see.

Within the next second, recognition flashed past her eyes and the memories from earlier came flooding her mind. She could recognise that picture, it was taken when the man she didn’t know wrapped his arm around her, mistaking her for his partner.

Questions began to swirl inside her head like a hurricane as she thought of how much of a coincidence it could be that somehow someone managed to snap a picture of that short moment. It was almost as if they knew this was going to happen... Doubt began to creep into her mind.

Her eyes flickered down to glance at his fists clenched tightly beside his body as he marched over towards her, closing the distance between them in a few large strides.

Tension brewed in the air between them as silence engulfed the three of them. While Natalie’s eyes were filled with shock and horror, Evelyn who was hiding behind her was looking on as her eyes gleamed with a knowing look and a smirk tugged at the corners of her lips.

"Answer me!" He shouted again this time when Natalie didn’t utter a single word but only remained frozen in place, his loud voice jolting her back to the present. She watched as his face darkened visibly as rage was pulsing through every single vein inside of his body. "Who is this man?! Why was he holding you?!"

She gulped inaudibly and took in a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart.

"James..." His name left her lips in a soft voice as she reached out to hold his hand only for him to recoil at her touch in disgust as a frown crept onto his face. A soft sigh escaped her parted lips. "I don’t know this man, he –"

He interrupted her abruptly, cutting her off mid-sentence as the words barely left the tip of her tongue. A loud scoff erupted from his throat.

"You don’t know this man?" He questioned, the words that left his lips were dripping with accusation as he glared at her with narrowed eyes. "Then why did he have his arms around you?!"

She inhaled deeply once again, trying her best to maintain her calm demeanour. "He simply mistook me for someone else."

A cold chuckle left his lips. "Doesn’t seem that way to me," he sneered with a disdainful scorn, unable to find it in him to believe his own wife.

Her brows were furrowed together as she kept her gaze steady. "What do you mean by that?" She questioned. "Are you trying to say that I am cheating on you with another man?"

Her words fell on his deaf ears as he ignored her, didn’t even spare her another glance. Instead, he turned to face his daughter this time and their gazes matched. "Did you see this man? What was your mother doing with him?" He asked, his tone carrying a sharp edge to it.

A wave of satisfaction washed over Evelyn at that instant, knowing that she achieved what she wanted. Afterall, she was the one who paid the man to grab her mother by her shoulders so that she could sneak a picture and drive a wedge between her parents, all because she wanted to ruin the trust between them and have her father stand by her side even when Aurelia comes into the picture eventually.

But she didn’t let the smile show on her face. Instead, she lowered her head, averting her eyes as the smug expression that was once on her face quickly faded away.

"I didn’t see anything..." she muttered softly under her breath, acting as though she wasn’t the one who set up this whole thing. "Who would even send you this picture? I’m sure it was just an accident like what mum said," she said innocently as she looked up to meet her father’s eyes.

"I don’t know, it’s an unknown number. And Eve, you don’t have to try and cover for your mother. Tell me the truth," he urged. "Did you see her doing anything with that man?" He continued to drill, his voice laced with accusation while Natalie stared at him with an incredulous look plastered across her face.

"James, that’s enough!" Natalie’s voice pierced through the tension that was lingering in the air between them as she burst out yelling, unable to hold it back any longer. "I told you I didn’t do anything and the man mistaken me for someone else. Why can’t you trust me? Is that hard for you to believe me?" She questioned. Hurt was evident in her words as her voice cracked towards the end of the sentence and tears started to fill the brim of her eyes, threatening to spill at any second now.

Seeing the look on her face and the tears glistening in her eyes, James’ gaze softened slightly and guilt ate away at him when he finally realised what he had been doing. He sucked in one deep breath and silence stretched between them as they locked eyes.

"Darling, I’m sorry," he apologised, reaching to try and hold her hands but this time, she was the one who pulled back.

"That’s okay," she muttered softly under her breath, her voice barely above a whisper. "I’m going to go take a shower," she announced before turning around to leave when Evelyn caught up to her, wrapping her fingers around her arm.

"Mum..." Evelyn looked up to meet her mother’s teary eyes and watched as she quickly reached up to wipe the tears off her face. "I..." Her voice trailed off as she struggled to find the right words to her.

"It’s okay, I’m fine," Natalie insisted before she walked away, leaving the father-daughter duo to stare at her retreating back before she disappeared out of their sight.

Evelyn turned back to look at her father with a sad look plastered across her face. "You shouldn’t have doubted her."

"I... It’s too late now."

First Person POV

The sound of my phone ringing reached my ears, immediately snapping me back to reality as I tore my gaze away from the computer screen. My eyes glanced over to look at my phone that was lying on my desk that was lighting up and before I could see the number displayed on screen, I answered the call.

"Hello?" I greeted absentmindedly, still distracted by the thoughts that were swirling inside my head.

"Aurelia..." A familiar voice came through the other end of the line. Recognition crossed my eyes for a split second and her voice broke me out of my little reverie. "It’s me, Natalie. I... I..." She stammered, struggling to get the words out of her throat.

A frown crept onto my face, resting between my brows. I could hear the way her voice trembled slightly as the words left her lips and she sniffled. There was a brief moment of silence that hung between us as my mind buzzed with thoughts.

"Were you crying?" I finally asked, my voice laced with a hint of concern and worry. "Are you... Are you okay?"

She let out a breath and I could hear her start sobbing over the phone as she broke down within the next second. I felt my heart ache for her and I pressed my lips into a thin line, struggling to find the words to say as though there was a lump stuck in my throat.

"Natalie..." I said her name as I looked at the maternity test results I had displayed on my computer screen that I had asked our Private investigator, Bryce to check on. But she could barely say a word in response and I was only greeted with her soft sobs over the phone "I will come find you," I found myself saying.

And before I knew it, we were sitting on one of those wooden benches at a quiet corner of the park. She looked at me as the corners of her lips curled upwards into a slight smile.

"Thank you for coming over," she said with a grateful look etched onto her face. Carefully, she reached out to hold my hands in hers as we locked eyes. "I needed this."

I smiled. "Of course. Are you feeling better now?"

We sat like that for a long time as I comforted her. When all of a sudden, my name left her lips.

"Aurelia..." She averted her eyes and lowered her head when I looked over at her. "There’s something that has been on my mind for a while now," she admitted as her voice dropped to a hush whisper, as though she didn’t want anyone else listening in on their conversation.

I raised my brow at her and leaned forward slightly to get closer to her.

"What is it?"
