Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Congratulations, my love
"You know what?"
"What?" I asked with a raised brow and I watched as the corners of his lips curved upwards into a smile while amusement danced in his dark brown eyes.
"I should take you somewhere. Get your mind off things and maybe relax a little. I think you need that," he said then there was a slight pause that hung between us before he let the next few words roll off the tip of his tongue. "You deserve it," he added as the smile that was plastered across his face widened.
I didn’t know exactly what I was picturing inside my head but it certainly wasn’t this.
Before I knew it, I found myself sitting at the top of the hill on a soft picnic blanket that he had laid out on the grass. We were sitting under the beautiful night sky, basking in the golden moonlight that shone down on us and letting our eyes wander around as we admired the twinkling stars that decorated the vast sky.
It was like a scene straight out of a romance movie.
I took a sip of the red wine from the glass he handed to me before I let out a breath and relaxed my posture. "This is nice," I muttered under my breath. I turned to look at him as we locked eyes and I let a smile fall on my lips."Thank you, I needed this."
He let a smile fall on his lips. "Anything for you."
Silence stretched between us for what seemed like an eternity as the air crackled with unspoken tension. Without a single warning, he leaned in closer towards me. Our faces were now merely inches away from one another and I could feel his hot breath fanning the nape of my neck as a smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
His hand slowly reached up to cup my face and his fingers brushed the back of my neck, sending a tingling sensation right down my spine as he gently pulled me closer towards him. His eyes flickered down to gaze at my lips and I watched as they fluttered shut. Soon, our lips collided as he pressed a searing kiss on my lips.
Warmth immediately engulfed me as I felt my cheeks turned red and hot while my heart skipped a beat in my chest. His tongue danced across my lips, begging to enter my lips. I parted my lips and kissed him back with equal fervour, my hands finding its way up to the nape of his neck and were quickly tangled in his dark hair.
A soft moan escaped my parted lips as his free hand snaked around my waist and brought me closer to him, our chests pressing up against one another as we continued to kiss.
Finally, we pulled away from one another and locked eyes this time as we caught our breaths. His lips curled up into an amused smile as he looked at me.
"There’s something else you need," he commented cheekily, his dark brown eyes gleaming with a knowing look.
I arched my eyebrow at him, as a cheery grin spread across my face and excitement laced my tone.
"What? What is it?" I asked, eager to find out.
From seemingly out of nowhere, he pulled something out from behind him. My eyes immediately snapped down and I found myself staring at the same trophy I was supposed to receive back at the awards ceremony. It was the same one that had shattered on the ground when Evelyn dropped it on stage in front of everyone.
My eyes widened in surprise and I couldn’t hold back the grin that spread across my face. I reached out excitedly and grabbed the trophy, holding it in my hands as I admired it, twisting and turning it around to take a good look at it.
"It’s my first trophy," I muttered under my breath, my eyes still fixated on that thing.
"They sent over a new one," he explained with a smile lingering on his lips. He leaned in to give me another kiss on my lips before he murmured the next few words. "Congratulations, my love."

Third Person POV
Natalie pushed open the door and her eyes fell on her daughter who was lying in her bed. Evelyn had her gaze fixed on her phone, with a smile lingering on her lips and a soft chuckle escaped her lips as though she had just watched something funny.
"Eve?" She called out to her as she stood by the door. Despite what happened yesterday, she knew she couldn’t hold a grudge or blame her for it, after all, she was still her daughter even though they aren’t exactly related by blood.
Evelyn slowly turned her head around to look at her mother, but she barely spared her another glance before she turned back around to glance down at her phone, ignoring her own mother.
"I told the chefs to prepare some of your favourite dishes for dinner," Natalie announced this time, her warm voice slicing through the tension that was clearly brewing in the air between them.
It was at this moment when an idea popped into Evelyn’s head. She whipped her head around and they locked eyes from a distance.
"I want to eat at the restaurant downtown," she said all of a sudden.
Natalie looked at her with wide eyes, surprised by her sudden request but she didn’t think too much about it. "But I already –"
Evelyn cut her off before she could even finish her sentence. "Didn’t you say that I am your daughter? Don’t you want me to be happy?" She questioned, her tone carrying a sharp edge to it as she attempted to guilt trip her mother, knowing that someone like her would highly likely fall for it.
Natalie let out a breath, and just as Evelyn had expected, she agreed anyway.
"Fine. I will tell them to keep it for tomorrow. Let’s go."
They soon found themselves in a restaurant and Evelyn’s dark green eyes gleamed with a knowing look as a smirk morphed itself onto her lips, almost as if she knew something that no one else knew. She had ordered her favourite steak, she was in high spirits. Meanwhile, Natalie ordered a simple salad. After all, she didn’t have much of an appetite.
Even as the mother and daughter ate, the air continued to crackle with unspoken tension.
"How’s the steak?" Natalie asked in an attempt to make conversation and ease the tension somehow.
Without even looking up from her plate, Evelyn muttered under her breath. "It’s good."
Soon, the table was just cleared when she wheeled herself off to the toilet. Natalie watched as she disappeared around the corner and it didn’t take long before Evelyn reappeared before her face once again, looking happier this time. A slight smile tugged at the corners of her lips as her eyes swept across the place.
"Shall we go?" Natalie asked and Evelyn nodded.
Grabbing the handles, Natalie carefully pushed her daughter’s wheelchair, navigating through the crowd in the bustling restaurant. Just as they were about to step out, not too far away from the door, Evelyn called out to her with a seemingly innocent request.
"Mum, I think I left my makeup pouch in the toilet, could you grab it for me?"
"Oh, yeah, of course. I will be right back."
Evelyn watched as her mother walked further back into the restaurant in a hurry but was quickly stopped by a stranger.
The man beside her wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her in close to him, murmuring next to her ear in a low voice. "Babe, where are you going?"
Without wasting another second, Natalie quickly pushed the man away from her as a frown was etched between her brows. "Excuse me. I’m sorry, I don’t know you."
The man looked at her and quickly backed off as he apologised profusely. "Oh so sorry, I thought you were..."
"It’s alright," she said, interrupting him and left without sparing him another glance.
Not noticing that the man that had his arm around her shoulders was looking back into the crowd, locking eyes with her own daughter with a smirk plastered across their faces.
The second they got home, their eyes landed on James who was already sitting on the couch with a huge frown on his face. Anger was swirling in the depth of his eyes as he had his arms crossed over his chest, fuming.
He lifted his head and snapped his head around to glare at his wife, his eyes narrowing into thin slits as his heart pounded loudly against his chest. The moment they locked eyes, it was over. Impulse quickly clouded his judgement and he lost control of his temper, unable to hold back even for the sake of Evelyn.
Before he knew it, the words burst out of his lips uncontrollably and his voice boomed loudly as the words that left his lips were dripping with accusation.
"Who is this man?!"
