Chapter 117: Arrest that man!
Chapter 117: Chapter 117: Arrest that man!
The man’s eyes grew wide with a mixture of anger and surprise as he glared at me like he wanted me dead. Seeing the look that was plastered across his face, I knew he wished I was buried six feet underground.
"Did you just call the police?!" He yelled, his loud voice piercing through the air as he continued to struggle and push against Xavier’s tight hold on him but to no avail. "Are you out of your fucking mind? You can’t do that! You can’t call the police on me!" He shouted once again, his voice cracking towards the end of the sentence as rage coursed through his body.
His body was shaking with anger and his loud voice had caught the attention of some neighbours nearby who came out to see what was going on. More people started to appear on the streets, standing by their front porch, watching us with curious eyes and a look of anticipation hung on their faces.
Serena was holding onto both her kids as she stood behind me, her eyes darting around in fear and anxiety. "He’s going to kill someone," she murmured next to my ear like it was a statement, her soft voice filled with so much fear and horror as her heart pounded loudly against her chest.
I reached down to wrap my fingers around her arm and I turned to meet her fearful gaze. I let the corners of my lips curl upwards into a slight smile. "Don’t worry about it, I’m not going to let that happen. You and your kids will be safe with us."
A string of whispers and murmurs started to fill the air as the neighbours gossiped among themselves, casting judgmental looks our way.
"What’s going on?"
"Are they arguing again? Poor woman, I pity her children..." They continued to mutter under their breaths, shaking their heads in disapproval with a frown resting between their brows.
"She should have left with her kids a long time ago..." Another chimed in. "I don’t understand why she would stay with a man like him."
"I mean she’s just a housewife, she probably has nowhere to go, and no savings. What can she possibly do?"
Their voices faded into the background as I whipped my head back around to face the man and I kept my eyes fixated on him, a fiery blaze burning in my dark eyes.
"If doing the right thing is me losing my mind then I don’t mind it," I retorted with a scoff and my voice was filled with certainty.
"You!" He gritted his teeth, but before he could move another inch, Xavier had pushed him onto the ground without a single warning, twisting his arms behind his back to hold him down with his cheek pressing against the cold hard ground, eliciting a loud gasp that rose from the crowd.
A loud yelp erupted from his throat once again. "Are you crazy? What do you think you are doing?! I can sue you for assault!" He warned, his deep voice heavy with a threat.
"Go ahead, I dare you," Xavier retorted as his voice remained unwavering while his body loomed above his. "Why don’t you just keep your mouth shut and wait till the police come and put your sorry ass in jail," he hissed with a disdainful scorn.
"My kids will hate you for sending their father to jail!"
I stepped forward and looked down at him as we locked eyes. "No, they won’t," I said resolutely. "They will thank me for keeping them and their mother safe and far away from you."
As soon as the words rolled off the tip of my tongue, the sound of the sirens filled the air and reached our ears. We snapped our heads around and our eyes landed on a police car zooming down the streets, heading right towards us. The car came to a halt in front of where the chaos unfolded and the police officers stepped out of the vehicle, walking over towards us with a serious expression.
The officer’s eyes flickered down to glance at Aaron who was pinned down onto the ground by Xavier. He looked back up to meet my eyes this time. "Good evening Ma’am. Did you make the police report?"
I nodded. "Yes, that would be me."
"Could you walk me through what happened?"
I went on to explain the situation that unfolded earlier while his partner took notes with a look of concentration etched onto his face. Then next thing we knew, we were watching as the police officers forcefully put Aaron in handcuffs and took him away while he continued to shout profanities and threatened to sue us the entire time the officers were shoving him into the backseat.
The street fell eerily silent after the police car drove off. With nothing left for them to see, the neighbours also scurried back into their homes and headed for their dinner.
I turned to face Serena who was staring ahead with a blank expression that masked her features as her lower lips trembled ever so slightly. Her mind seemed to be occupied with thoughts.
I found myself looking at her as my brows were knitted together and a mixture of concern and worry were swimming in the depths of my dark brown eyes. I placed my hand on her shoulder and let out a breath.
"Serena... Are you okay? How are you feeling?"
Slowly, she turned her head around to face me and we locked eyes. I noticed that her eyes were glistening with tears and they were threatening to spill at any given second. My words must have opened the floodgates because within a split second, the tears that she was once trying so hard to hold back came streaming down her rosy cheeks.
I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into a tight embrace as I patted her back in a soothing manner. "Let it all out..." I murmured next to her ear. "I’m here with you, I’m here..."
I pulled away from the hug and reached up to wipe her tears off with my thumb. "Why don’t you come and stay with us?" I suggested as I let a smile fall on my lips.
She lowered her head and sniffled. "I... I can’t..." she mumbled under her breath. "I don’t want to intrude."
"I understand." I knew how she felt and I wouldn’t want to be the one who pressured her so another idea popped into my head. "I don’t want to risk anything happening to you guys. I have seen the look on his face and how he treated you. I’m afraid of what he will do. How about... I book you a hotel for you and the girls?"
She let out a breath, a look of relief appeared on her face as she looked up to meet my eyes. She pulled me into a hug. "Thank you, Aurelia. I owe you a big one. I will pay you back for this when I get the money."
A soft chuckle left my parted lips. "Don’t worry about it. I promised I will get you out of this mess."
***
The next morning I went knocking on the door of her hotel room. There wasn’t an answer for a while and I started to grow more anxious with each passing second.
"Serena?" I knocked again, harder this time, even I sounded more anxious than before. "It’s me, Aurelia," I called out.
The door finally swung open and the moment my eyes fell on Serena, I let out a breath of relief. There she was, standing in front of me with wide eyes, like she was surprised to see me.
"Oh, hey, Aurelia," she greeted casually but her voice was still trembling. "What... what are you doing here?" She asked, stammering as she struggled to get the words out. The door was barely pushed open, leaving only a small gap as she hid half her body behind the door.
There was an anxious look plastered across her face as her brows were furrowed together to form a small frown resting between her brows. She looked as though she had something on her mind but she couldn’t spit it out for some reason.
I could immediately tell that something was clearly wrong.
"What’s going on?" I questioned bluntly, jumping straight to the point as my eyes darted around, searching for some form of clarity. The kids were nowhere to be seen. "Did something happen?" I asked, my voice laced with concern and worry.
"It’s nothing," she answered way too quickly, only fuelling the suspicion in my mind. "I’m okay."
My gaze glanced down to see that she was hiding an arm behind her back. Without saying another word, I grabbed her by her arm, pulling it out from behind her back.
A loud gasp emerged from my throat when I saw the cut on her arm and the bright red blood trickling down her skin.
"Oh my god, you are bleeding."
