Chapter 108: Chapter 108: Don’t listen to her

A surprised gasp erupted from Evelyn’s throat and her hands flew to cover her mouth within the next second. "What...?" She mumbled under her breath, disbelief was written all over her face. It seemed like her world was falling apart right at this moment. "Is this..."

A flustered expression crossed my mother’s face in an instant when she realised what I had just said. She was stunned by my sudden accusation that was hurled right at her, not knowing what to say or how to respond. Her eyes darted around anxiously for a moment before she turned to look at Evelyn, meeting her gaze.

"Don’t listen to her, of course it’s not true," she quickly explained, the words left her lips in a trembling voice. Then, her voice dropped to a hush whisper as she kept her eyes fixed on Evelyn, holding her shoulders. "You are part of Lloyd’s family and nobody can take that away from you, got it?"

"How do you know you could trust her, Evelyn? She’s known to be a great liar and manipulator," I butted in and my mother snapped her head around to glare at me with an intense look swimming in her green eyes. "I bet she wanted to give you a better life so that’s why she did that. Maybe she swapped us when we were babies. So that makes me the daughter of the Lloyd family."

My mother’s eyes widened. "Aurelia... don’t go spouting nonsense!" She snarled with a deep frown resting between her brows. "Evelyn is not my daughter, you are. What the hell are you even talking about?"

"Are you sure? Because it sure as hell doesn’t feel like it at all."

"What makes you say that? Come on, don’t be ridiculous, Aurelia. Of course, I am your mother," she insisted with a determined look on her face as she stepped forward, trying to hold my hand but I quickly pulled my hand back, disgusted at the thought of her touching me.

She took a deep breath this time, her features masked with a calm expression. "Look, we only came to visit you out of concern, why are you giving us such a hard time? Are you out to get us or something?" She hissed, the words that left her lips were dripping with accusation.

"Well, I never said I was going to make it easy, now did I?" I retorted as my voice remained unwavering, my tone carrying a sharp edge to it. "If you don’t leave right this second then –"

"Then what?"

"Then I can promise you that neither of you will never know peace for the rest of your life," I threatened as my cold eyes bored right into hers.

"Aurelia, what’s wrong with you? How could you say that to your own mother? After all, she had given birth to you and took care of you for over 20 years," Evelyn chimed in, in support of my mother, although I could still see that she was recovering from the shock earlier. "You can’t just threaten her into leaving."

"Actually, I can and I just did. And I would do it again and again if I needed to." I shifted my gaze to look at my mother. "Why don’t you leave me alone and go get Evelyn a change of clothes? After all, she is soaking wet, isn’t she?" I taunted with a knowing look gleaming in my dark brown eyes.

Both my mother and Evelyn’s eyes grew wide with rage as soon as the words tumbled out of my mouth. "You –!"

"You know..." Xavier’s voice reached my ears this time as he drawled, his voice trailing off as he chimed in, cutting them off. He turned to face them, his eyes darting between the two women before him. "If I had known that the two of you would be so shameless as to barge in unannounced, I would have hired guards to guard this room. No outsiders should be allowed in here."

A cold chuckle left my mother’s parted lips. "Outsiders?" She repeated with an incredulous look plastered across her face, anger swirling in the depths of her green eyes. "I am her mother, did you forget that? I’m here to check on my own daughter."

"But you said that you don’t have a daughter like her," he challenged as his eyes glistened with a look of defiance. A smirk tugged at the corners of his lips before he let the next few words roll off the tip of his tongue. "Did you forget that?" He mocked, tossing her words right back at her.

I couldn’t stop the snicker that slipped through the gaps of my fingers when I saw the look of pure shock on my mother’s face.

She glanced over to glare at me with disdain swirling in the depths of her eyes as they were quickly narrowed into thin slits. "It’s not funny, Aurelia."

I let another chuckle leave my lips. "Well, I think it is."

There was a pause and silence settled among us once again before Xavier broke it.

"So are the two of you going to leave or do I have to call the guards or police on you? You pick."

The questions and thoughts from that day of the confrontation with my mother and Evelyn were constantly running at the back of mind, haunting me the entire time. It was all I could think about and I knew I needed to do something about it.

True to my own words, as soon as I was discharged from the hospital, I quickly contacted Bryce once again, inviting him to come over to our place to talk. We can’t be seen by anyone else again and risk our plan getting exposed.

Soon enough, I found myself sitting by the kitchen island at home with him. This time, Xavier was here too as he sat beside me.

"Bryce," his name left my lips as we locked eyes from across the table. "I need you to do something for me."

He arched his brow at me, anticipation gleaming in his dark eyes. "What is it?"

I lowered my gaze. "It’s about my mother," I began, a serious expression masked my features. There was a slight pause as I looked up to meet his eyes once again. "I suspect that I might not be her biological daughter."
