Chapter 93: You’re the Lonely One

Emma Hart came downstairs and inquired, "Where is he?"

"Sir just went out," Mrs. Harris replied.

Emma nodded and got busy with something. Soon after, she carried Bailey down from upstairs, "Mrs. Harris, I’m taking Bailey out for a bit."

"Miss Emma, you..." Mrs. Harris looked at Emma worriedly, recalling how Emma always seemed eager to venture out. Although security around the villa had been tightened, Mrs. Harris still felt apprehensive.

"Don’t worry, Mrs. Harris, it’ll just be for a little while," Emma assured her as she and Bailey headed outside.

Bailey, happily trotting ahead, kept looking back at Emma as if afraid she would disappear suddenly.

Each time Bailey looked back, Emma met its gaze, reassuring Bailey before it joyfully set off again.

In the nearby garden, many residents, all from wealthy families, walked their prized dogs, chatting occasionally.

The dogs were of various prestigious breeds, their coats glossy, and fully equipped with accessories. Some owners even hired nannies solely for dog care.

Emma glanced at Bailey, a gift from Damien Sterling’s friend, reputedly a prestigious breed with certification, indicating its value and pedigree.

Indeed, as soon as Emma brought Bailey into the crowd, several acquaintances gathered around, admiring Bailey, "This dog is a noble Labrador."

"There aren’t many places in the world where you can find such a purebred dog."

Another person knelt to inspect Bailey’s neck tag, "Look, it says here, this is a noble’s dog!"

The crowd’s comments drew more onlookers to admire Bailey, who seemed unafraid, almost as if it knew it was being praised.

Surrounded by people of considerable wealth who spared no expense on their dogs, Emma considered her options but, remembering Damien Sterling’s resolute demeanor before leaving, reluctantly asked, "Excuse me, would anyone be interested in adopting another dog?"

The group frowned, puzzled by Emma’s suggestion.

"This dog... is quite expensive?"

"Your dog costs more than several of ours combined..."

"If anyone is willing to take it, I’d give it away for free, as long as... as long as you treat it well," Emma pleaded.

Most people around here have a dog they adore fiercely. Though dogs are beloved, everyone still feels a deeper connection with their own canine companions.

One individual stepped forward, squatting down close to Bailey, "Are you really giving him up?"

As soon as the person reached out, Bailey, from seemingly nowhere, showed a fierce temper, barking aggressively at the man, "Woof woof..."

This startled the man into standing up quickly, "I thought this dog was gentle? Why such a temper? I don’t want him anymore."

After a while, the crowd dispersed, leaving Bailey and Emma Hart alone.

"Bailey, what’s going on with you? If you keep this up, no one will want you. What will you do then?" Emma Hart said worriedly, gently stroking Bailey’s head.

Bailey appeared fierce to others, but was exceptionally gentle with Emma Hart alone.

Soon, a woman approached, looking down and asking, "Miss, are you really giving up your dog?"

Emma Hart looked up to see a girl about her age, with a kind face. Emma nodded, "Yes."

The girl squatted down, and Bailey, unlike before, was not fierce, "This little dog seems to be very attached to you. Why give him away?"

Emma Hart shook her head helplessly, "Someone in our house is severely allergic to dog hair, so we have to give him away."

The girl smiled, "Well, if it’s really inconvenient for you, I could take this little dog. But... we’re about to move away, so you might not see him often."

Emma Hart should have been happy that someone was willing to adopt Bailey. She had hoped someone from the neighborhood would take him so she could see him whenever she wanted.

But it seemed this girl was the only one willing to adopt Bailey, meaning Emma wouldn’t be able to see him as easily anymore.

The girl played with Bailey, who unexpectedly licked her fingers gently. Emma Hart looked down at Bailey, feeling a bit jealous that he warmed up to someone else so quickly.

But maybe this was the best outcome for Bailey, "It’s okay, I can visit him later."

"That’s definitely possible," the girl said happily.

Emma Hart nodded, "Alright, I’ll bring him to you in a few days."

On the way back, Bailey seemed to be in a much better mood after his walk, but Emma Hart felt incredibly downhearted.

Upon reaching the doorway, Mrs. Harris hurriedly opened the door ahead of her, "Miss Emma, why are you just getting back?"

Before Emma Hart could reply, she glanced through Mrs. Harris and saw Damian Sterling sitting on the living room couch.

At that moment, Damian Sterling was lounging back on the sofa, his long legs crossed, gazing down at his expensive watch.

Caught off guard by Damian Sterling’s perfect profile, Emma was momentarily distracted until Damian slightly parted his lips to ask, "Where have you been?"

"It’s nothing," Emma responded coolly, crouching down to unhook Bailey’s leash.

Just as Bailey made to run towards the couch, Emma quickly called out, "Don’t run over there."

She hastily grabbed Bailey, whispering, "That man dislikes you, don’t you know?"

Damian Sterling’s voice, laced with cold mockery, cut through the tension, "Keep talking to your dog every day, Emma Hart."

Ever since Bailey arrived, Emma spent her days revolving around the dog.

"After all, talking to a dog is better than talking to some people," Emma retorted deliberately.

Damian’s brows furrowed, taken aback by her insinuation. "Emma Hart? Have I been too indulgent with you?"

Indulgent? Damian really had the nerve to use that word.

"That’s your indulgence towards yourself," Emma shot back.

"Hmm?" Damian furrowed his brows deeper, his gaze becoming intense and filled with curiosity.

"With so many women around Mr. Sterling, why bother seeking discomfort here? Bailey causes you allergies, the simplest solution would be..." Emma looked up at Damian Sterling.

Damian, his gaze deepening, leaned in closer, "What?"

"To be with someone else."

Damian chuckled, his tone teasingly ambiguous, "Go to someone else, and you won’t feel lonely?"

"You’re the one who’s lonely."
