Chapter 87: Not as Obedient as a Dog
Damien Sterling shook his head in resignation, not out of annoyance.
Behind him, the butler had already presented the imported dog food to Damien.
"Here, feed it this. Let me know as soon as it’s finished, and I’ll have more flown in for it."
Emma Hart took the dog food from Damien’s hands, puzzled, "Needs to be flown in? This one bag..."
She wondered about the price of just one bag of dog food—could it be a hundred? Two hundred dollars? Or at the very most, five hundred?
"It’s three thousand a bag, enough for one week," Damien stated matter-of-factly.
Emma nearly choked on her saliva in shock. "What... what did you say?"
"You heard me right," Damien replied calmly, unfazed by her reaction.
The price was staggering enough to astonish and surprise Emma Hart.
Three thousand for a bag, for a week? That’s nearly five hundred dollars a day? She questioned her math, but no, it was correct.
Five hundred dollars a day, for dog food?
Oh! My! God!
That’s more expensive than what a person eats!
What Emma didn’t know was that this was just the beginning of a life where ’living like a dog’ took on a whole new meaning.
In Damien Sterling’s world, this was nothing out of the ordinary.
Bending down to look at the Labrador, Emma couldn’t help but exclaim, "You’re eating better than I do."
The Labrador looked at her with a dopey expression, not understanding a word she said. Its round, rolling eyes and the pink tongue that gently licked Emma’s cheek gave off an air of innocent affection.
Emma laughed, wiping the drool from her face with her sleeve, "Bailey, can you stop licking people all the time? Get rid of this bad habit!"
"Woof!" the Labrador responded, as if to say "yes" to Emma.
Emma felt as if Bailey had an incredible sense of human emotion.
Glancing at Damien Sterling, she hid her expression, leaned closer to Bailey, and whispered in his ear, "Of course, except when it comes to a certain someone."
It seemed she had found a man’s weakness.
Initially, she hadn’t wanted to keep the big dog, thinking she couldn’t even take care of herself. But now, the thought crossed her mind that maybe Bailey could protect her in the future.
Like, maybe helping her lick someone to make that person scared? Why not enjoy it?
Damien Sterling sat on the sofa, watching Emma Hart play in the garden through the floor-to-ceiling window for half an hour.
The smile on her face never faded. If he had known it was so easy to please her, just with a dog, Damien wouldn’t have bothered with so much effort.
Watching the same garden where Emma once sought things that harmed her body, and now seeing her joyfully playing among the dense, thriving potted plants with Bailey felt like progress to Damien.
The smile on the woman’s face made Damien Sterling suddenly feel as if the warm sunlight streaming through the window was lulling him into a sleepy haze.
So much so, that Damien decided to turn off his phone, not because he had no work that afternoon, but because his wealth afforded him the caprice.
Unbeknownst to him, he fell into a deep sleep on the couch, only to be awakened by a sensation of something wet and warm in front of his nose.
Damien Sterling’s eyes snapped open to find Bailey right in front of him.
His expression darkened, and he nearly leaped off the couch in shock.
Emma Hart, coming over and witnessing the reaction between man and dog, seemed to understand the familiar scenario that had unfolded.
"Bailey!" Emma called out, and Bailey wagged its tail, walking towards Emma.
Emma squatted down, gently stroking Bailey’s head, and softly said, "Bailey, you can’t do this next time."
"There won’t be a next time!" Damien, looking disdainfully at the dog hair on himself, coldly told Emma nearby.
As Emma leaned in towards Bailey, about to say something, Damien, annoyed again by her petting, stopped her, "Emma Hart, if you keep petting it after it licks me, I’m immediately changing tonight’s menu!"
Emma stopped her hand movements, not seeing anything wrong with her actions, puzzled.
She looked at her palms and then at Damien, "What’s wrong?"
Damien coldly replied, "If you do something that doesn’t anger me and instead earns my praise, wouldn’t you repeat that action next time?" He made this somewhat inappropriate comparison.
Emma looked at Damien’s serene expression, understanding the logic but finding his example a bit too much.
Was she being compared to a dog?
Feeling indignant in front of Damien, she couldn’t resist retorting, "Please don’t compare me to a dog."
"Sometimes you’re less obedient than a dog," Damien teased, with a slight raise of his brow.
"You..." Emma was so angered by Damien that she was at a loss for words.
Damien nonchalantly asked, "What about me?"
"I don’t care about you," she retorted.
"Then who do you care about?" Damien persistently asked.
Could it be? Was this man so petty as to quibble even over her quick wit? Was he really going to press her to admit whom she cared about?
Utterly domineering!
Excessively possessive!
On this night, a gentle drizzle fell outside the window, a sliver of a gap by the bed allowed a slightly cool breeze to waft in, setting a comfortable temperature that added to the sleepiness.
After dinner, Emma Hart settled Bailey down and went back and forth a few times before she could return to her room with peace of mind.
"Did you go to check on the dog again?" Damien Sterling asked from in front of his computer as Emma Hart entered the room, looking concerned.
Emma nodded, "Will it adapt well here?"
"What can we do if it doesn’t adapt?" Damien said without looking up, his casual remark irritating yet undeniable in its logic.
Emma glanced at Damien, working intently at his computer.
His earnestness made one realize that his success in maintaining the Sterling family’s enterprise at such a young age wasn’t just talk.
This level of dedication promised a bright future for Sterling Group.
They say a man is most attractive when he’s serious, and Damien Sterling was a testament to that, compelling Emma to steal a few more glances.
"Am I so captivating you can’t bear to leave?" Damien suddenly said.
Emma was startled; if she hadn’t been mistaken, his gaze had remained fixed on his computer the whole time. When had he noticed her watching?
"I wasn’t looking," Emma retorted.
"I didn’t say you were definitely looking. Maybe the allure I mentioned is perceived through other senses?" Damien’s gaze slowly shifted to Emma’s cute, slightly annoyed face, finding her reaction amusing.
He usually disliked distractions while working, but Emma was the exception.
