Chapter 62: The One in Her Heart
Her grandmother glared at her, silently signaling her to stay quiet, and pulled out a handful of coins and a card from the bag.
"What’s this? Just some loose change and a worthless card? What kind of card is this?"
"It seems to be a credit card," Emma’s mother replied uncertainly.
"A credit card? Can it be used to buy things?" her grandmother asked impatiently.
"It should work," Emma’s mother answered hesitantly.
Upon hearing this, Emma’s grandmother snatched the card eagerly.
"Let me warn you, your daughter is hopelessly naive. Don’t you start acting foolishly too!" she scolded, tucking the card into her pocket.
When Emma’s mother reemerged, her expression was strained. "Mom, what’s wrong? What were you and grandma discussing inside?"
"It’s nothing," Emma’s mother replied, her unease masked as she handed Emma the glass of water.
"Emma, your grandmother has had a tough life. She’s old now. If she asks for something and you can provide it, please do," she urged.
"Mom? Why are you saying this too? You know I don’t want to," Emma protested.
Seeing Emma’s upset, her mother knew it was best not to push further.
Grandmother, already dressed to leave, noticed Emma Hart still seated and, with a sense of dismissal, said, "Emma, dear, with your current status, it’s not fitting for you to linger in this dilapidated old house. Better head back soon."
Her grandmother’s demeanor changed faster than the pages of a book.
Emma glanced at the clock. Damien Sterling no longer restricted her freedom as before, but naturally, he imposed other limitations, like not permitting her to eat lunch outside, fearing it might harm the baby, and restricting the length of time she spent outdoors.
After exchanging a few words with her mother, Emma left the alley.
She hadn’t walked far when she felt someone following her. Turning abruptly, she saw it was Ethan Turner.
She had no desire to entangle with him again and quickened her pace.
"Emma, can we talk for a moment?" Ethan pleaded from behind.
Emma didn’t stop. What was left to discuss?
About how, over the years, their relationship couldn’t match up to a single scheme from Natalie Black?
About how he chose to believe Natalie’s words over the genuine feelings they had shared for years?
Ethan stepped in front of her, "Emma, can you stop avoiding me?"
Emma scoffed, "Or else what?"
"Natalie Black was just a fleeting interest. She never truly loved me," Ethan confessed, his head bowed in front of her.
Emma looked at the man she once thought would protect her for a lifetime. His current docile demeanor disgusted her, yet a part of her felt a sting of pity.
She despised her own weakness, realizing that kindness might not have a place here.
Had this man ever shown her compassion when he hurt her?
Emma, fighting back tears and feigning indifference and strength, asked, "What does that have to do with me?"
"I couldn’t meet Natalie Black’s expectations. She started despising me, thinking I wasn’t classy enough. Her choice to be with me was only to flaunt her superiority over you. My relationship with her..." Ethan Turner’s voice trailed off as his head drooped.
Emma swiftly interrupted Ethan, unwilling to hear anything about him and her.
"If there’s nothing else, I’d prefer if we didn’t meet again," she asserted, quickly walking away to avoid shedding tears in front of Ethan.
By evening, Damien Sterling returned home punctually.
Emma stood, lost in thought by the window, reminiscing about her most innocent student days with Ethan Turner—days filled with simple, earnest affection, a time she yearned for but feared she would never experience again.
That boy in the sunshine, the athlete soaring to score on the basketball court, the caring boy who’d cross several streets just to bring her favorite sweets, the boy she once swore she’d marry...
How could people and feelings change so abruptly, rendering emotions worthless?
Damien Sterling approached, yet Emma Hart didn’t notice until he was right beside her.
"What’s the matter? Lost in thoughts about your ex-lover?"
"What?" Emma was jolted back to reality, meeting Damien’s icy stare.
Again, she averted her gaze. Why did she always resist looking at him?
Damien’s cold eyes sparkled briefly as he firmly grasped Emma’s chin, compelling her to face him.
Her eyes, pure and unblemished, seemed to reveal the innocence of her younger self, a girl whose heart belonged solely to her boyfriend.
Would she be more adorable if she remained like that?
The force in Damien’s hand grew as his thoughts wandered, almost crushing her delicate jaw.
After a moment of intense gaze, Damien’s face twisted into a mocking smile. "But don’t worry, you’ll forget about him soon because I am the one by your side now, only me!"
His woman, he wouldn’t allow her heart to accommodate anyone else.
"Let’s eat," Damien said, releasing Emma’s chin without a hint of tenderness.
She rubbed her aching jaw, contemplating the harshness of his touch.
The dinner table was set with simple, exquisite dishes, each dish meticulously prepared by Mrs. Harris to ensure Emma’s nutritional needs.
While eating, Damien casually asked, "Finally come to your senses?"
Emma was puzzled, as usual, by his cryptic words. "What do you mean?"
"Finally decided to use that card," he stated nonchalantly.
His card, naturally, was monitored.
Money was both Damien’s most and least cared-for entity, depending on whom it was for.
The people he chose to spend on could use as much as they wanted without him minding.
"What card?"
Emma Hart was clueless about the card Damien Sterling mentioned until she remembered the one he once gave her.
Searching her bag, she realized, "The card is gone."
Damien appeared unconcerned. "Spend it as you like, I’ve never been bothered about the money."
That card was a VIP card from major banks, designed to alert him immediately if anything was amiss. He hadn’t set any restrictions on the card he gave Emma.
"It was your grandmother who used it to buy a house," Damien casually mentioned, already aware from the message alerts.
