Chapter 478: The Conversation
Emma Hart could clearly feel Damien Sterling’s grip on her shoulder tighten significantly.
Whenever Mr. Sterling Senior was mentioned, Damien’s mood visibly soured, especially after the recent amnesia incident.
"What does it matter if he knows or not? This whole situation has left me cold. But you, you’re just so foolish. Why did you go along with them and deceive me?" Damien Sterling reproached, though his eyes were filled with concern.
Of course, he knew that Emma Hart couldn’t stand up to the pressure from the others.
Emma, however, took his words to heart, lowering her head in guilt. She felt sorry for Damien’s ordeal—during such a critical time, she hadn’t been able to help him and had only held him back.
"I’m sorry. If it weren’t for my uselessness, you wouldn’t have..." Emma Hart mumbled softly.
Her apologies were abruptly cut off as Damien Sterling sealed her lips with a deep kiss.
"How could I blame you? I know you well, and I know how much you’ve suffered during these days. Now that I remember everything, Emma Hart, I won’t let you endure any more pain," Damien Sterling promised tenderly.
Emma Hart nodded, moved by his words.
Meanwhile, the hospital was in chaos, with everyone frantically searching for Damien Sterling.
Especially Riley Turner, who was running up and down the hospital, drenched in sweat.
She couldn’t understand how, in just a blink of an eye, Damien Sterling—a grown man—could vanish. He wasn’t the type to play tricks. He had said he was going to the restroom, so how could he just disappear?
"Have you found him?" Riley Turner anxiously asked the staff, but their responses only deepened her disappointment.
Now, at the highest point in the hospital, she gazed down at the bustling streets below, feeling close to breaking down.
Damien Sterling, a patient—where could he have gone?
She had only just started to experience his gentleness, and now he was missing. His phone was off, and she didn’t dare inform Mr. Sterling Senior. Who knows how the old man would react if he found out?
Meanwhile, Damien Sterling had turned off his phone and taken Emma Hart to revisit the places they had recently been. If they were so ruthless, he thought, then this time, he would make it unforgettable for them too.
Emma Hart glanced sideways at Damien Sterling, reluctantly taking a bite of her food.
"Are you that unhappy being with me?" Damien Sterling noticed her subtle expression and asked.
Emma Hart pouted, feeling a sense of lightness she hadn’t felt in a while. "No, I’m just thinking... You’re out here enjoying yourself, but imagine how worried your grandfather must be, knowing you’re missing."
Damien Sterling shot her a look. "Stop with the overflowing sympathy, will you? The moment I woke up, I was determined to punish them. If they don’t respect me and tried to take away the person I love the most after my memory loss, then I’ll make them understand what it feels like to lose someone they love."
"You’re so bad," Emma Hart murmured between bites.
Damien Sterling rarely smiled, but this time he did, reaching out to pinch her cheek. "Is this your first day knowing me? I’ve been very polite about it."
Emma Hart couldn’t help but laugh.
Riley Turner returned home dejectedly, where Mr. Sterling Senior was sitting on the sofa. She didn’t dare tell him what had happened, fearing it would upset him.
"Did you find him?" Mr. Sterling Senior asked before Riley could say anything.
Riley Turner cautiously glanced over at him. The old man’s face was calm, his eyes closed as if resting.
"Grandpa, you knew?" Riley asked in surprise.
Mr. Sterling Senior slowly opened his eyes. "And you thought you could keep something this big from me?"
"No, that wasn’t my intention. I just didn’t want to worry you," Riley Turner explained.
Mr. Sterling Senior was initially ready to lose his temper, but when he saw Riley Turner’s anxious expression, he couldn’t bring himself to do it.
"There’s nothing to worry about. I know him well—he probably just wanted to get some fresh air. Don’t worry, everything’s fine," Mr. Sterling Senior reassured her calmly. Riley felt slightly relieved by his words, but she couldn’t completely shake her concern.
Emma Hart took a deep breath, savoring the smell of the food, and said, "Grandpa probably isn’t even worried about you. He’s such a calm person, he must think you just got tired of the hospital smell and stepped out for some air."
Damien Sterling let out a dry laugh, thinking to himself that Emma Hart really did understand the old man well.
"It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks; what matters to me is you, Emma Hart. I’ll make sure to bring you back home soon." Damien Sterling always spoke these words with such emotion, and it was because of this that Emma Hart trusted him completely.
"The kids were sent abroad by Grandpa. I’m worried about them—I don’t want them to live overseas," Emma Hart said, her eyes shining as she tried to convey her feelings to Damien Sterling.
Fortunately, Damien Sterling understood completely. He gently stroked her hair. "You don’t need to worry about these things. If you trust me, just finish your meal."
Emma Hart felt a warmth bloom in her heart—something she hadn’t felt in a long time. Damien Sterling was back, truly back. He was more patient and attentive than before, and seeing him so caring made her feel at peace.
That evening, Damien Sterling returned home. The moment he walked in, the house felt empty.
A satisfied smile played on his lips as he dialed Mr. Sterling Senior’s number. "Grandpa, I’m home," he reported his whereabouts voluntarily.
Soon, Mr. Sterling Senior arrived, and with him came Riley Turner, her eyes still wet with tears.
The moment Riley saw Damien, she almost cried out in joy. She was so happy, like a parched traveler in the desert who suddenly found water. She ran to him without a second thought and threw herself into his arms.
"Where did you go? You have no idea how worried we were!" She clung to his shoulders, half-scolding, half-pleading.
Damien Sterling remained emotionally distant, glancing at Mr. Sterling Senior. The old man still seemed so unapproachable, as if even his sudden return wasn’t a surprise. It was as if everything had been under his control the whole time.
"What’s there to worry about?" Damien Sterling gently pushed Riley Turner out of his embrace and asked indifferently.
Riley finally smiled, her relief evident. "I was worried you’d leave me. What would I do if you left? And besides, you’re still recovering."
Damien Sterling chuckled, but there was something unsettling in his laughter. "Riley Turner," his voice suddenly hardened, "what’s the point of this fake concern? It’s a shame you’re not an actress."
His words hit Riley like a punch to the gut. An actress? Why had he suddenly changed like this? Could it be that his memory had returned?
