Chapter 473: A Familiar Feeling
However, he spoke more politely now, even to her.
Emma Hart couldn’t deny the slight joy she felt when she heard the question come from Damien Sterling’s lips. It showed that, deep down, in his very soul, this man remembered her—her outline, her appearance. Though he didn’t recognize her standing before him now, Emma Hart believed that one day he would remember her.
"I told you before, we don’t know each other. You’re quite strange, mister. I remember you asking me last time if you had any children. How could you not know if you have children? What kind of father are you?" Emma Hart didn’t quite understand why, but she felt an urge to reprimand Damien Sterling.
But as soon as she spoke, she regretted it. Wasn’t she being too harsh on a man who had lost his memory? She was asking him to remember her, to remember their child, but he was ill.
A wave of bitterness welled up in Emma Hart’s heart, and she felt that maybe she shouldn’t be making such demands of him.
Unexpectedly, she felt a pang of guilt.
Perhaps it was because she was about to leave the country, heading to another place to live. They might never see each other again in this lifetime.
Even if Damien Sterling eventually regained his memory, she might not escape Mr. Sterling Senior’s control to return to her homeland. And even if she did return, who knew how much things would have changed here?
Damien Sterling’s expression grew a bit awkward. He realized he shouldn’t ask that question again. If you make a woman lose patience with you, that’s the biggest failure as a man.
He gave Emma Hart an embarrassed smile, "I’m sorry, I was too abrupt. I’m just confused about a lot of things. My mind is full of mysteries. If I’ve offended you, please forgive me."
Emma Hart bitterly smiled in her heart.
When had she ever truly blamed him? Even if she did, it was only a way to seek his care and affection.
The Damien Sterling of the past never bothered with such formalities. Now, he called her "Miss" and used all sorts of polite phrases. He was so courteous, it made her uncomfortable.
For the first time, she hated someone’s politeness.
Those formalities only widened the distance between them.
"It’s okay. Enjoy your coffee. I’ll be going now." In the end, Emma Hart couldn’t bear to face Damien Sterling, who had forgotten everything at this moment, and turned to leave.
A strange feeling surged through Damien Sterling’s mind. Watching that small, slender figure walking away, he felt a sudden reluctance. His body moved on its own, grabbing Emma Hart as she was about to leave.
Emma Hart was startled by the force, and a fleeting joy crossed her heart. Could it be that he suddenly remembered her?
She turned around to meet Damien Sterling’s gaze, and deep within his soul, something stirred—a deep, profound feeling that was hard to describe. Emma Hart’s eyes sparkled like countless stars in the night, twinkling with unspoken words.
It was as if a giant hook had caught Damien Sterling’s gaze, drawing him in.
"What are you doing?" Emma Hart had been staring blankly at Damien Sterling, but in that moment, she snapped out of it, realizing he was holding her arm.
Damien Sterling, equally surprised, quickly let go of Emma Hart’s hand and politely asked, "Could we sit and talk for a bit?"
A trace of joy flickered in Emma Hart’s eyes.
But then she began to resist, "What is there to talk about between us?"
Perhaps this was the most basic reaction of a woman when she’s upset—saying one thing but meaning another.
"So this is where you’ve been." A voice, gentle yet laced with cruelty, suddenly sounded from behind Damien Sterling.
Emma Hart’s heart sank. Why was she here? How could it be such a coincidence that she showed up now?
She quickly glanced at Damien Sterling, her eyes unintentionally pleading for him to keep her there.
"Your wife’s here. I’ll be going now." Emma Hart said, intending to leave.
She found it quite ironic. Among the three of them, Riley Turner was the one who should leave the most. Yet at this moment, upon seeing Riley Turner, Emma Hart found herself fleeing in retreat.
"Wait a minute," Damien Sterling commanded sharply.
In that moment, Emma Hart almost believed he had regained his memory. He used to speak to her in this exact same authoritative tone, often barking orders.
She quickly turned around, hoping for something, but was met with disappointment when she saw the clarity in Damien Sterling’s eyes.
He still hadn’t remembered the past.
Damien Sterling slowly approached Emma Hart. "Why are you so flustered?" he asked coldly.
Though he had lost his memory, his intelligence was intact. Riley Turner had told him he didn’t have any children, yet the security guard had said otherwise. Why would a security guard lie about something like that?
Moreover, if Emma Hart truly had no connection with him, why did she avoid him so much during their encounters, or respond with such hostility?
Before Emma Hart could answer, Riley Turner, sensing the situation turning against her, quickly stepped forward and grabbed Damien Sterling’s arm.
"I was hoping you could take me shopping tonight, what do you think?" Riley Turner said, her voice laced with sweetness.
Remembering her earlier lie, Damien Sterling angrily shook off her hand. "We’ll talk about you later."
The tension in the air was palpable, but Emma Hart felt a strange sense of happiness. This was the Damien Sterling she knew. His sudden shift away from being overly polite indicated that he had realized he was being deceived.
Riley Turner, clearly rattled, looked anxious. "Alright, no shopping, but we should head back now. Grandpa is waiting at home."
She lied. Emma Hart could tell from Riley Turner’s expression—she knew exactly what Riley Turner looked like when she was lying.
"Wait," Damien Sterling’s voice was low but firm.
After ordering Riley Turner to stand by, he continued moving toward Emma Hart.
As Emma Hart watched him approach, her heart raced with anxiety, just like it had years ago when she’d been nervous around him.
"Tell me, what exactly is our relationship?" Damien Sterling’s resolute gaze stirred in Emma Hart the urge to reveal the whole truth.
But would Damien Sterling believe her? Would he trust a stranger over his own grandfather?
She couldn’t take that risk. If Mr. Sterling Senior found out, who knows what danger her child abroad might face?
And there was Riley Turner, the troublemaker, to consider.
Sensing the worsening situation, Riley Turner suddenly grabbed Damien Sterling’s hand. "Honey, didn’t you say you’d spend the day with me?"
Her tone was sickeningly sweet. Riley Turner rarely addressed Damien Sterling this way, knowing he disliked such intimate terms. But she had her own plans—slowly, she aimed to win over Damien Sterling’s heart.
