Chapter 471: A Desperate Attempt
Mr. Sterling Senior truly spared no effort, even going so far as to threaten a mother by using her children against her. But it was a tactic that struck with brutal effectiveness.
Emma Hart stood at the entrance of Sterling Group, glancing inside from time to time. She was waiting for someone. After much difficulty, she had learned that Mr. Sterling Senior would be coming to the company today to discuss some matters. No matter what, she couldn’t let this opportunity slip by. Even though she knew her actions might be nothing more than a desperate struggle, she was still willing to give it everything she had.
Sometimes, people charge headlong into obstacles just to give themselves a reason to retreat.
After waiting for a long time, she finally saw a group of professionals in business attire stride out of the lobby, looking like they had just come from a significant meeting.
Emma Hart gathered her courage and walked resolutely toward the lobby. Her heart was pounding so hard that she could feel its rhythm echoing through her entire being. This was her last chance.
Mr. Sterling Senior was laughing and chatting with his companions, a seasoned smile on his face—a smile that was inscrutable to most. You could never tell if he was truly happy or not.
Suddenly, Emma Hart mustered her strength and quickly walked up to the group, taking a deep breath as she looked directly at Mr. Sterling Senior.
Mr. Sterling Senior’s brows furrowed slightly, but the expression quickly vanished, replaced by his usual composed demeanor. "Let them go ahead. I have some business to attend to," he calmly instructed his assistant.
Emma Hart’s fingers clenched tightly together, trying to keep herself composed, but more importantly, gathering enough courage to face the cunning businessman before her.
The two of them moved to a seating area in the lobby.
"What do you want?" Mr. Sterling Senior’s face darkened immediately. Emma Hart was the last person he wanted to see.
Emma Hart took a step forward. The moment Mr. Sterling Senior spoke, she had already convinced herself not to be afraid. He was just a man, after all, not some demonic force. Yet, even with this resolve, she knew he had the power to drive her to the brink.
"Why did you send my children abroad?" Emma Hart asked directly. Mentioning her children unleashed all the courage she had within her.
Mr. Sterling Senior was somewhat surprised; he wasn’t used to being spoken to in this manner. However, he found himself slightly amused by the sight of Emma Hart’s angry face, thinking it was rather naive.
"Your children?" Mr. Sterling Senior replied, his tone dripping with disdain. That condescension ignited the deepest anger within Emma Hart.
"Yes, my children. What gives you the right to send them abroad without my consent? What gives you the right?" Emma Hart continued to question him.
She wasn’t sure if her tone was inappropriate. For someone who had always been polite and respectful to her elders, she might indeed be overstepping.
Mr. Sterling Senior seemed unfazed. If anything, his expression grew more stubborn, a hint of arrogant smugness flickering in his eyes.
"Young lady, you need to understand whose children they are—whose blood runs through their veins. And do you really think raising your voice here will bring them back to you? Even if you did get them back, what kind of life could you offer them?" Mr. Sterling Senior’s words were delivered with a calm but powerful authority.
Emma Hart was momentarily at a loss for words. She felt something hot welling up in her eyes. The thought of her children living in a foreign country filled her with anguish. If only she hadn’t been so helpless, things wouldn’t have ended up like this.
"I already told you, you can go abroad to take care of the children. All your expenses will be covered by me, and I’ll ensure you live in wealth and comfort. But seeing you recklessly barging in here today, I’m afraid I can’t trust you to take care of them." Mr. Sterling Senior’s words were calm as ever, and he began to slowly walk away, clearly ready to leave after delivering his humiliating remarks.
"Wait!" Emma Hart reflexively called out to Mr. Sterling Senior.
She knew from the start that her actions were foolish, like an egg trying to break a rock. But she wasn’t ready to give up without a fight, unwilling to admit defeat without at least trying.
Mr. Sterling Senior’s facial muscles twitched almost imperceptibly. He paused, not turning around, waiting for Emma Hart to speak.
Each step Emma Hart took felt as heavy as lead. "Fine, I’ll agree to go abroad and never come back. But there’s one thing I need to do first, and only you can help me with it." She straightened her posture, determined.
This time, she was going to win. She knew that even though Mr. Sterling Senior showed no reaction to her presence, deep down he was worried about her resistance. Her existence was a threat to his family, and he didn’t want his grandson, who had lost his memory, to suffer again.
For him, the most important thing was to make Emma Hart disappear as quickly as possible.
"You’re bargaining with me?" Mr. Sterling Senior turned around, looking at Emma Hart in disbelief. He had already guessed what she would ask for. "Go on, say it."
Seeing the old man partially relent, a barely noticeable smile tugged at the corners of Emma Hart’s lips.
"Before I leave, I want to see someone," she said directly, with full confidence.
"You still want to see him? Don’t you think you’ve caused him enough pain?" Mr. Sterling Senior was angry, though his expression remained calm.
Emma Hart responded firmly, "He’s the father of my children, after all. It’s only right that I see him. What am I supposed to say if the children ask me about their father?"
Mr. Sterling Senior had anticipated this request from Emma Hart, so he wasn’t particularly surprised.
He spoke in a flat tone, "Emma Hart, don’t push your luck. You know my temperament. Don’t make it so that you end up seeing neither of them."
Emma Hart let out a cold laugh. Things had escalated to this point—she wasn’t afraid of death, so what else could scare her?
"Fine then, I’ll just stay here in the country. As for the children, well, there might be more in the future," she said with a dismissive, almost indifferent tone. This coldness was something Mr. Sterling Senior believed completely, because he himself was a cold man who believed in the existence of such indifference in others. He didn’t put much stock in the idea of selfless love.
"But if you really want to see him, I can arrange it. But let me make one thing clear—I’ll have people watching you. Don’t say anything you shouldn’t, and don’t do anything you shouldn’t, or I’ll show you what happens to those who don’t know their place." Mr. Sterling Senior’s words were cold and threatening, delivered with the ease of someone well-practiced in intimidation.
Emma Hart shuddered slightly, shaken by the chilling threat. Deep within her soul, a sense of unease stirred, but it paled in comparison to her desire to see him.
"Alright, I agree," Emma Hart promised.
