Chapter 450: Car Accident
Damien Sterling found it increasingly difficult to control his raging anger, pressing harder on the gas pedal, the roaring engine a testament to the car’s tremendous speed.
He had no idea how to calm down and now wanted nothing more than to race back to confront Matthew Taylor. Only then might he find some relief. Suddenly, he took a sharp turn, driving in a different direction.
There were many cars on the road, and his sudden maneuver caused a chain reaction of brakes screeching. A driver leaned out of his window, shouting, "Are you crazy? Turning like that at such high speed..."
Damien Sterling couldn’t care less about those people right now. His mind was consumed with anger, determined to settle the score with Matthew Taylor, who had taken advantage of the situation.
After Emma Hart had shouted at the door for a long time without any response, she sat dejectedly on the bed, an overwhelming sense of helplessness washing over her. She felt a deep sorrow and futility—her lack of acceptance by the Sterling family, her grandmother’s self-righteousness, even Matthew Taylor stopping her from ending her life. Everything seemed nonsensical and out of her control.
Locked in this room by Damien Sterling, who had stormed off, she sat on the bed, feeling utterly lost and directionless.
Emma Hart had no idea how long she sat there in a daze until the butler opened the door. He sighed, "Madam, the young master has been in a car accident. It happened on the coastal road, and he’s now in the hospital. The master asked me to inform you to go there as soon as possible; they’ve already gone ahead."
Hearing the word "accident" snapped Emma Hart back to reality. "What? Damien Sterling was in a car accident? Is it serious? Which hospital? Say it again."
The butler’s brow furrowed. "The young master was driving very fast and crashed into the barrier. I don’t know the extent of his injuries, but a car is ready outside to take you. You should go quickly."
Emma Hart confirmed she had heard correctly—Damien Sterling had been in a car accident, and his condition was unknown. Tears immediately welled up in her eyes. How could this happen so suddenly? Just a moment ago, he had been yelling at her, and now he was in an accident.
She rushed outside, praying softly, "Damien Sterling, please be okay..."
In the car, Emma Hart was anxious and restless. Despite her dislike for Damien Sterling and the way he treated her, she didn’t want anything bad to happen to him.
The car ride felt interminably long. As soon as she arrived at the hospital, she ran straight to the operating room. From the nurses, she learned that the surgery had ended and Damien Sterling had been moved to a private room.
Emma Hart hurried to the room but hesitated at the door. Through the glass, she saw the scene inside: many people surrounding him. Mr. Sterling Senior was smiling happily, and next to him, a familiar face sat by Damien Sterling’s bed, peeling an apple and looking at him with concern.
It was Riley Turner. Emma Hart felt a pang of jealousy and tears welled up again. Mr. Sterling Senior’s murmurs echoed in her ears.
Damien Sterling was awake but hadn’t refused Riley Turner or asked her to leave. His face was pale, and his handsome features were partially obscured by bandages. His injuries looked severe, wrapping from his head downward.
Damien Sterling coldly observed the crowd around him. As his gaze swept across the room, he didn’t see the familiar face he longed for, and a sharp pain stabbed at his heart.
Mr. Sterling Senior spoke up, "Look at what kind of wife you’ve chosen. You get into a major car accident, and she doesn’t even show her face. Does she want you to die here before she comes out?"
Due to the bandages, Damien Sterling’s usual sharp gaze was softened, and he simply looked over, his tone icy enough to freeze, "This is my own business."
Mr. Sterling Senior’s cane hit the ground with a heavy thud, the sound revealing just how angry he was as he turned his back.
Emma Hart, feeling guilty, quickly moved away from the glass window of the hospital room and disappeared.
Riley Turner put down what she was holding, stood up, and smiled warmly at Mr. Sterling Senior, "Grandpa, please don’t be mad. Damien is seriously injured; you shouldn’t argue with him."
Mr. Sterling Senior, hearing Riley Turner’s words, turned back around and snorted, "I’m only letting it go because of Riley, but look at her—such a gentle and generous girl. Where else can you find someone like her? And you don’t know how to appreciate her."
Damien Sterling pretended not to hear and turned his head, letting Mr. Sterling Senior say whatever he wanted.
Outside, Emma Hart felt another pang of jealousy. No matter what, she couldn’t compare to Riley Turner in the Sterling family. Mr. Sterling Senior had never accepted her all this time.
She walked away from the door, feeling that she wasn’t needed there. Riley Turner would take good care of him. Emma Hart’s entire demeanor was filled with a sense of desolation.
Riley Turner faintly noticed a shadow moving just now and had her suspicions but didn’t show it. She continued to smile gracefully, with a hint of an unreadable expression in her eyes.
Riley Turner made an excuse to step outside and saw Emma Hart disappearing down the hallway. She hesitated for a moment but decided to follow her.
Inside the hospital room, Mr. Sterling Senior’s face was creased with a satisfied smile. Riley Turner was truly perfect—dutiful, generous, and she cared deeply for Damien Sterling. Plus, her family background was quite good.
Mr. Sterling Senior looked at Damien Sterling and said, "See how great Riley is? And look at who you chose. Your judgment is really poor."
Listening to Mr. Sterling Senior, Damien Sterling lowered his head without a word. He knew that no matter what he did, no one in the family trusted him. If it weren’t for the shares, he wouldn’t be so compliant.
Various people came to visit, all with the same repetitive greetings, making it tiring to listen to.
Damien Sterling managed to suppress his irritation, having mastered a stoic expression after so many years in this family.
Despite the many visitors, he never saw the familiar face he longed for. Suppressing his inner fury, Damien Sterling thought, "Fine, Emma Hart. Don’t come to see me if you dare."
Emma Hart had already left the hospital, wandering aimlessly down the street. Cars passed by, but she felt helpless, unsure of where to go.
