Chapter 437: Indivisible Family Bonds

Max handed two glasses of cold water to Emma Hart and Damien Sterling, who were sitting on the wooden bench.

"When did you move here?" Emma Hart asked.

"Not long ago," Max replied, scratching his head.

"I’ll go make dinner; you guys just sit and relax," Max said as he headed towards the kitchen.

Emma Hart sat inside the house, feeling completely out of place. She had no desire to see her grandmother.

Soon, the door opened again, and Grandma Hart walked in with two full bags of vegetables, shouting, "Max! Come help me with the groceries!"

"Just a second!" Max shouted back.

"Grandma," Emma Hart greeted her grandmother coldly and then walked over to help with the groceries.

"Emma! Mr. Sterling! What brings you both here?" Grandma Hart exclaimed with a mix of joy and embarrassment as she glanced at Emma Hart and Damien Sterling. She was troubled by the thought of Mr. Sterling being led to such a shabby house by Max.

"No, no, Emma, you rest. Grandma will make something delicious for you soon! Mr. Sterling, you must be tired from the journey; please take a good rest," Grandma Hart said, turning away with the two bags of vegetables and heading to the kitchen, muttering Max’s name under her breath.

"You continue cooking; I’ll go down to the market and get some ready-to-eat food," Emma Hart said, preparing to head to the door. "We can’t just eat vegetables and expect to be full."

"No need, you sit down. Tomorrow, I’ll have someone come and change their house. Tonight, let’s consider eating vegetables as a way to cleanse our stomachs," Damien Sterling said. He was no longer picky about food, thanks to Emma Hart.

"Then I’ll help Grandma cook; you watch some TV," Emma Hart said as she headed towards the kitchen.

In the kitchen, Grandma Hart was peeling some kind of vegetable. She was thinking of taking out the pork she bought yesterday from the fridge to defrost. She didn’t mind eating poorly herself, but Mr. Sterling couldn’t be treated casually.

"Grandma, let me help you," Emma Hart said, rolling up her sleeves.

"Oh, Emma, no, no, no, you go rest. It’s rare for you to visit Grandma, and I’m already very happy. Go sit down and wait for me to make something delicious for you," Grandma Hart said hurriedly, wiping her hands with a cloth and blocking Emma Hart from entering the kitchen.

"Max! Take your sister back to the living room," Grandma Hart shouted to Max.

"Alright, alright," Max said as he pushed Emma Hart back to the living room and then returned to the kitchen to help his grandmother cook.

Before long, the sizzling sound of the frying pan filled the house, and the aroma of the dishes began to seep through the door cracks.

Emma Hart couldn’t sit still in the living room. She wandered between the balcony and the bedroom.

The already cramped bedroom was even more crowded with two small beds and a wardrobe, leaving only a narrow path for walking.

Tears fell from Emma Hart’s eyes onto the floor. She quickly wiped away the tears and snot with a tissue she had with her.

"Dinner’s ready!" Grandma Hart announced as she pushed open the kitchen door, carrying a plate of freshly cooked greens to the table. Emma Hart quickly composed herself, walked back to the living room, threw away the trash in her hand, and went to help her grandma set the table.

"Are you okay?" Damien Sterling asked, noticing the unusual flush on Emma Hart’s face.

"I’m fine. Wash up and get ready to eat," Emma Hart replied with a smile.

Grandma Hart had cooked three different vegetable dishes and a plate of stir-fried pork with peppers. She also made a pot of tomato and egg soup. During the meal, she made sure to serve everyone some of each dish.

"I’m full," Emma Hart said, eating quickly. She got up to take her empty bowl to the kitchen to wash it.

Grandma Hart immediately put down her chopsticks and rushed over, saying repeatedly, "Emma, don’t wash the dishes. Leave them for Grandma."

Emma Hart was taken aback by her grandmother’s sudden tenderness. Before she could react, Grandma Hart had already taken the bowl from her hands and started washing it herself.

"Grandma, I can do it myself. You should go back and eat," Emma Hart tried to stop her, but Grandma Hart didn’t listen, just kept pushing her away.

With no other choice, Emma Hart had to give up.

After dinner, Emma Hart told her grandmother about Max getting a job at Damien Sterling’s company. However, she didn’t mention that Damien Sterling had already paid off their debts. Her grandmother’s habit of racking up gambling debts needed a lesson, Emma Hart thought.

"That’s wonderful, thank you, Mr. Sterling! Max, you must be smart and diligent at work, understand?" Grandma Hart said, knocking Max on the head.

"Grandma, I’ve already made arrangements. Tomorrow, you and Max will move. You shouldn’t stay here any longer," Damien Sterling said.

He knew Emma Hart would object, but despite the circumstances, they were still family. Living in such conditions, even if not his fault, made him feel guilty.

As expected, Emma Hart’s eyes widened at his words. Noticing this, Damien Sterling casually avoided her gaze and continued, "It’s getting late. You should rest. Tomorrow, someone will come to help you move."

"Alright, thank you again for all the trouble!" Grandma Hart bowed and nodded at Damien Sterling.

"Mr. Sterling, don’t worry, I will work hard!" Max said, looking at him with gratitude.

Damien Sterling smiled and nodded at him.

"Alright, we should go now. Grandma, Max, rest well," Emma Hart said, bidding them farewell.

Max and Grandma Hart escorted them downstairs, watching them leave until their car was out of sight before heading back upstairs.

The poorly constructed stairwell was dimly lit by a flickering light bulb. The sounds of adults arguing and children crying outside added to the hellish atmosphere.

"Alright, alright, now we can live in a mansion again!" Grandma Hart exclaimed excitedly, skipping a little. Max followed her silently up the stairs.

Noticing Max’s silence, Grandma Hart was displeased. She slapped his shoulder hard and scolded, "You need to be smarter and learn more at the company!"

"Okay," Max replied coldly.

Meanwhile, Emma Hart sat in the car, looking at the dilapidated buildings outside. She had once lived in such a neglected corner of society.
