Chapter 409: A Thief Broke In?

Damien Sterling frowned. He was right in the middle of something; how could he just stop? He leaned closer to Emma Hart’s ear and whispered, "No rush, let’s deal with this first." Then, his movements suddenly sped up, becoming more intense. After another round of tossing and turning on the bed, they finally got up. Both made a shushing gesture to each other, ready to check out what was going on outside.

They each grabbed a golf club from the master bedroom closet, put on their shoes, and stealthily walked out the door.

Sure enough, the noise they heard earlier was real because the door to the small bedroom, which was previously closed, was now wide open. The white curtains fluttered with the cold wind blowing in. The small bedroom was pitch black, reminiscent of a horror movie scene. Emma Hart felt a surge of tension. She instinctively grabbed the corner of Damien Sterling’s shirt.

Damien Sterling led the way into the small bedroom to check. Finding nothing, he left the room reassured. The two of them were about to head downstairs when they heard the refrigerator door close. They froze.

Damien Sterling stood at the top of the stairs. The first floor was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint moonlight, which barely revealed the layout of the room. He noticed there was no movement in the living room, but there seemed to be a shadow in the corner of the kitchen.

He partially covered Emma Hart’s ears and whispered, "Stay here, don’t move." Emma Hart nodded quickly.

Damien Sterling then approached the kitchen alone, gripping his golf club. Emma Hart clutched her own club tightly, her sweaty palms making it slippery.

As Damien Sterling reached the kitchen, he heard the sound of someone chewing food. The thief inside hadn’t noticed the homeowners were now close. Suddenly, Damien turned on all the lights on the first floor. The thief jumped up immediately.

"Oh!" the thief shouted as he jumped.

The two in the house were stunned to see that the thief was just an eight or nine-year-old boy. The boy was thin, with pale skin and delicate features, marred only by a few freckles on his face.

When he saw the lights, the food bag in his hand fell to the ground. He looked terrified as he watched Damien Sterling approach with the golf club raised.

"Who are you?" Damien Sterling asked in French.

The boy nervously replied that his name was Baptiste, and he lived in the house next door.

"Why are you stealing from my house?" Damien Sterling’s tone was harsh; he didn’t trust the boy. Residents here were all prominent figures in society. How could they raise a son who would steal? Plus, with such tight security, how did he get in?

Emma Hart slowly walked down the stairs, looking at the trembling boy standing before Damien Sterling. She gently asked, "Don’t be afraid, you must have a reason, right? Tell us."

Hearing Emma Hart’s soft voice, the boy slowly raised his head but remained silent.

Emma Hart glanced at the still-open refrigerator door, noting the snack wrappers scattered on the floor. She smiled and asked, "You must be hungry. Why didn’t you just go home to eat instead of coming over here?"

She gently placed her hand on the boy’s shoulder, realizing he was trembling. He must have been terrified by Damien Sterling.

"If you don’t start talking, we’ll have to call the police," Damien Sterling warned, frowning.

"No! Please!" the boy pleaded nervously.

Finally, he explained the situation. His parents worked abroad, and he was usually taken care of by a nanny. Yesterday, the nanny had to leave unexpectedly, so he ordered takeout and played video games all day. When he got hungry, he found he couldn’t prepare the food at home. Noticing the vacant villa next door had its lights on and smelled of delicious beef, he thought he might find some food there and decided to take a chance, sneaking in to steal some while the occupants were away.

"But what you did was very wrong," Emma Hart scolded him.

"Right. Do you have any money?" Damien Sterling asked.

The boy shook his head in shame.

"Looks like I have to call the police," Damien Sterling said, pulling out his phone.

"No, I don’t think that’s necessary," Emma Hart quickly intercepted, taking the phone from Damien.

Damien looked at her, puzzled.

"He’s just a child. Let’s not blow this out of proportion. We should give him a break," Emma suggested.

She felt a pang of sympathy for the boy. It wasn’t entirely his fault; his parents had neglected him. It was late, and she didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. He looked exhausted and needed to sleep.

"If we let him off now, he might do it again," Damien said, raising an eyebrow.

"I promise I won’t do it again. Please, don’t call the police," the boy pleaded, lifting his head, eyes full of remorse.

The two looked at him. His eyes were filled with guilt.

"We won’t call the police, but I need to inform your parents," Damien Sterling said, making his final concession and looked back at Emma Hart.

Emma agreed.

The boy gave Damien his parents’ contact information. Damien called them immediately, and the boy received a scolding over the phone.

Finally, he politely apologized to both Damien Sterling and Emma Hart before heading back to his villa.

With the situation resolved, Damien and Emma headed upstairs to their bedroom. Midway, Damien paused and walked toward the small bedroom.

Through the window, he saw that his villa and the boy’s house were only separated by a wall, and the boy must have climbed over it to get to their house, which was very risky.

"Is something wrong?" Emma asked, confused.

"No, let’s just go to sleep," Damien said, locking the small bedroom window.

Emma jumped onto Damien’s back, wrapping her arms around his neck and burying her head against his broad back.

By the time they reached the master bedroom, Emma had already fallen asleep on Damien’s back.
