Chapter 360: Becoming Damien’s Assistant (3)
Emma Hart then left the break room with the coffee in hand. Behind her, a mix of disappointed and envious expressions followed.
As she walked back to the CEO’s office, Emma couldn’t help but reflect on the fickle nature of people. When she first joined Sterling Group as a nobody, she was met with indifference and scorn. Now, as Damien Sterling’s wife, those same people who once stepped all over her were now trying to curry favor.
The quickest way back to Damien’s office was through the design department. Emma had already wasted some time chatting with her old colleagues, so taking the long way back would only make her late and possibly incur Damien’s wrath. She decided to cut through the design department instead.
During lunch break, the design department was mostly empty, with only a few employees napping at their desks. Sterling Group’s heavy workload made this a common sight.
To avoid disturbing anyone, Emma slowed her pace but accidentally bumped into a woman, spilling some coffee on her own skirt.
"I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!" Emma apologized hurriedly.
"What’s wrong with you? Can’t you watch where you’re going?" Lucy Allen snapped, though her clothes were untouched by the coffee.
Emma apologized repeatedly.
Lucy Allen took a closer look at Emma. Despite Emma’s professional attire, the clothes were clearly high-end, costing at least tens of thousands. Someone who could afford such clothes must be an important person in the company, yet Lucy didn’t recognize her.
Lucy quickly analyzed the situation in her mind.
"Are you okay?" Emma asked, looking up at Lucy.
The woman before her had an air of reserved beauty. Her brown curls cascaded to her waist, and she wore fashionable clear glasses. She also had impressively long legs.
"Um... if everything’s fine, I’ll be on my way," Emma said, growing impatient as Lucy stood there deep in thought. She was in a hurry, after all!
"Wait, what’s your name?" Lucy Allen blocked her path.
"Uh, Emma Hart," Emma replied hesitantly, thinking how odd this woman was.
"You’re Damien Sterling’s wife, aren’t you?" Lucy quickly deduced.
Emma nodded, confirming her identity.
"Mrs. Sterling, I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble. I’m Lucy Allen, Mr. Sterling’s junior from college. I have a bit of a temper, please don’t take it to heart!" Lucy Allen extended her hand to reconcile.
Emma Hart thought to herself, "Quite a temper and quick to change too." But she knew it was better to have friends than enemies, so she accepted Lucy’s apology. "It’s my fault. I should be the one apologizing for not noticing you."
"Mrs. Sterling, your skirt is dirty. I have a spare in my office. If you don’t mind, you can change there," Lucy offered.
"Thank you, but I’m in a rush. Maybe next time!" Emma hurriedly left the design department.
Dreading Damien Sterling’s reaction to her delay, Emma’s spine tingled at the thought of his potential outburst.
Three minutes later, she arrived at Damien’s office. "Sorry to keep you waiting, Mr. Sterling!"
"What took you so long?" Damien glanced at the clock. More than ten minutes had passed.
"I accidentally spilled some coffee, and my skirt got dirty," Emma admitted, lowering her head like a child expecting a scolding.
"Come here," Damien said.
Emma placed the coffee on Damien’s desk.
"Are you hurt?" Damien asked with genuine concern.
"No, I’m fine," Emma quickly replied, shaking her head.
She pulled down the blinds in Damien’s office and changed into a clean skirt he had thoughtfully kept for such incidents.
Afterward, Emma returned to her relaxed state, wearing headphones and watching videos.
Damien, meanwhile, continued working tirelessly, only taking a break for lunch. Emma couldn’t help but think how tough it must be to be a leader, working non-stop while his subordinates ate and slept.
Reflecting on her old colleagues she met in the break room, Emma thought, "What a bunch of fair-weather friends."
"Ugh," Emma Hart sighed as she watched a funny video, a hint of sadness in her eyes.
"What’s wrong? You seem down," Damien Sterling observed, noticing her melancholic expression.
"I ran into some of my old colleagues from the design department," Emma said, taking off her headphones. "It’s amazing how fake people can be. They used to treat me like I was invisible, but now they act like I’m a national treasure."
Damien calmly sipped his coffee, glancing at Emma. "That’s not being fake. It’s reality."
Indeed, when you stand on the same level as them, you’re seen as a threat. They try their best to push you down. But when you’re in a position they can never reach, you become their idol. For their own benefit, they will go to great lengths to support you, even acting like sycophants to gain your favor.
"Forget it! There’s no point in dwelling on it," Emma decided to brush off her negative feelings. There’s no need to waste energy on people who don’t matter.
"By the way, when I passed through the design department, I didn’t see Sophia Greenwood. And do you know a Lucy Allen? She said she’s your junior from college," Emma threw a barrage of questions at Damien.
Damien chuckled, gesturing for Emma to come closer. "Sit," he said, patting his lap.
Emma obediently sat on his lap, resigning herself to the situation. She was here, and there was no escaping it. Constantly resisting was becoming tiresome.
Holding her close, Damien asked with a smile, "Why the sudden interest in all these questions?"
"I’m just curious," Emma replied.
Ah, how could he forget? This little wildcat had always been curious, though she’d been more restrained lately.
"Sophia Greenwood is currently overseas for training. The company hired a new design director, who happens to be my junior from college. That’s all there is to it," Damien Sterling explained without hesitation.
Indeed, he had no idea that Lucy Allen was so capable, moving from the PR department to the design department with a salary that had doubled.
