Chapter 342: Sprained Ankle
"Damian Sterling, it’s freezing, absolutely freezing! Maybe Emma Hart could send me one too? Otherwise, coming to your company will give me a cold," Logan Harrington complained.
"What? Are you serious?" Damian Sterling shot Logan a glare. She wanted his woman to send her clothes? That was asking too much.
"Butterfly, my little butterfly, I’ve caught a cold. Don’t you feel sorry for me?" Logan Harrington ran out of Damian Sterling’s office and went straight to Amelia Davidson to vent.
"A cold? Because of that troublemaker at Damian Sterling’s house? Alright, let me handle it," Amelia Davidson immediately grasped the situation. Emma Hart had bought Damian Sterling a down jacket, which he refused to take off. But he also wouldn’t turn on the heater, so while he stayed warm, Logan Harrington, who came to discuss business, was left in the cold. Without a down jacket, no coat could keep him warm, and he really did catch a cold.
Taking advantage of her free afternoon, Amelia Davidson arranged to meet Emma Hart for a drink.
"Emma, I heard you bought Mr. Sterling a down jacket?" Amelia asked, seemingly casually.
"Yes, you heard about it too? But didn’t he say he didn’t like it? Didn’t he refuse to wear it? Oh, I was planning to return it today, but I forgot. My memory’s awful! But how did you know?" Emma Hart chattered away. Amelia Davidson, being astute, pieced everything together.
"Emma, Mr. Sterling really adores you. He’s been wearing the jacket you bought all day at work. Everyone in the company knows he has such a considerate wife. They all want to know where you bought it. Everyone wants to get one," Amelia Davidson mentioned offhandedly while praising Emma.
"Really? Everyone wants to buy one? Do you all want to wear the same?" Emma Hart was puzzled by Amelia Davidson’s remark.
"Absolutely. I’m thinking of getting one for Logan Harrington too. After all, Logan has to come here frequently for work and caught a cold today. How can he manage without a warm jacket? Don’t you agree?" Amelia Davidson finally got to the point.
Emma Hart, not being foolish, understood immediately. She knew what to do and, after a few more pleasantries, went on her way.
"Damian, about this jacket, I... I..." Emma Hart stammered as she saw Damian Sterling come back, unsure how to tell him that everyone was getting sick because of him, and she needed to take the jacket away.
"What’s wrong? What’s the matter with the jacket? What do you want to say?"
"The jacket... the jacket... nothing, never mind." She decided to wait until Damian Sterling was asleep to quietly hide the jacket.
The next morning.
"Emma, where’s my jacket? Where did you put it?" Damian Sterling asked as he couldn’t find the down jacket he had left on the sofa the night before.
"Uh, I don’t know. Maybe Bailey dragged it off to play with. Anyway, forget about it. How about a snowball fight?" Emma Hart quickly changed the subject.
"Sure." The word left his lips, and Emma Hart couldn’t contain her joy.
Fully geared up, they went outside, though it was all Emma’s doing—Damian found it troublesome.
"Aunt Emma!" The neighborhood kids were all out for the weekend and greeted Emma Hart enthusiastically. She was well-loved and friendly, so the kids enjoyed playing with her.
"Aunt Emma, are you joining the snowball fight too? Let’s all play together!" said a boy named Charlie, the leader of the group.
"Sure, the more, the merrier! Let’s do it!" Emma Hart agreed without hesitation.
Damian Sterling frowned but agreed. For her happiness, he’d go along with it.
As the snowball fight began, Damian realized his mistake. The kids all targeted him, huddling around Emma Hart. Despite his prowess, he couldn’t withstand the barrage of snowballs from so many kids. Soon, he seized an opportunity to drag Emma Hart back home, with her laughing so hard at his predicament that she could barely stand.
Later that day, Emma Hart took their two little ones for a routine check-up at the hospital. As they left, she accidentally twisted her ankle in a five-centimeter-wide ditch. The injury was serious, causing her foot to swell up visibly, leaving her wincing in pain.
"What’s going on? How did this happen?" Damian Sterling demanded, abruptly ending the shareholders’ meeting when he heard that Emma Hart had twisted her ankle. He couldn’t continue the meeting and immediately headed to the hospital to see her.
"A sprained ankle, also known medically as ’ankle sprain,’ is a common injury in daily life. It occurs when external force causes the ankle to move beyond its normal range, stretching or tearing the muscles, ligaments, and even the joint capsule around the ankle, resulting in pain, swelling, and limping..." The doctor rambled on, explaining the injury, but Damian Sterling was growing impatient.
"Enough! I’m not here for a lecture! Just tell me how to treat her ankle! Or else, watch your back," Damian Sterling snapped, his temper flaring. When it came to Emma Hart, he had zero tolerance for delays or nonsense.
"Mr. Sterling, a sprained ankle isn’t a serious illness. The key is proper rest. Your wife should avoid strenuous activity, rest as much as possible, and ideally, stay off her feet. I’ll prescribe some medication, and with rest and treatment, she should recover within a month," the doctor quickly explained. Though Damian Sterling was powerful, the doctor was experienced and knew how to handle the situation without getting flustered by Sterling’s outburst.
"It better be that way, or your job is on the line!" Damian Sterling warned before rushing home to care for his precious Emma. She appeared strong on the outside but was more fragile than anyone realized. He didn’t want Emma to endure any pain, yet he had failed to protect her, letting her get hurt.
Thinking about it filled him with guilt, but there was no way to change what had already happened. Regret was useless now.
