Chapter 341: Snowfall
Considering it was still winter, even though March had not yet arrived, City A, despite being in the south, was quite cold. It rarely snowed here, but this year, large fluffy snowflakes were falling.
Emma Hart had grown up in a southern region and had never seen snow before, while Damien Sterling had studied abroad in a country where it snowed heavily every year, so snow was nothing new to him.
"Damien, it’s snowing!" Emma exclaimed excitedly one morning, jumping out of bed and rushing to the window to see the snow-covered landscape.
"Have you never seen snow before?" Damien asked, rubbing his eyes groggily. The twins had kept them up late last night, so he was still feeling quite tired this morning.
"I grew up in Z City, where there’s no central heating in winter and it never snows. I’ve only ever seen snow on TV," Emma explained, feeling a bit embarrassed.
In truth, she really wanted to go out and play in the snow, but she was afraid Damien might not agree. So, when she saw the snow that morning, she excitedly ran to Damien’s room to wake him up, not expecting him to ask her about it.
"Uh... can I go out and play in the snow for a bit? Just for a little while... please?" Emma’s voice trailed off, growing quieter with each word until it was barely audible.
"No, I have a lot of important meetings today," Damien replied. He thought about his packed schedule and several key meetings that couldn’t be postponed. He had already compressed much of his workload for her sake; a week’s worth of travel was squeezed into three days, and he had rushed back to City A immediately after his last meeting just to be with her, worried about leaving her alone.
He really couldn’t bear to leave her unattended.
"Alright then, I’ll just take a quick look," Emma said, disappointed. She hadn’t expected that such a simple request to play in the snow would be denied by Damien.
Lately, Damien had been watching her more closely, as if afraid she might run away. But how could she? Damien was her family, just as she was his. They had two adorable children together; there was no way she would abandon them.
In truth, Damien wasn’t afraid she’d run away. After so much time together, they had become like one person. He knew he couldn’t live without her, and she felt the same. He just couldn’t bear the thought of her getting hurt. With recent big moves in the company and several envious smaller companies being pushed to the edge, he didn’t know what desperate measures they might take. But since she was his wife and the mother of his children, he couldn’t have bodyguards following her all the time, and she didn’t like that either. So, he tried to keep her from going out as much as possible. If she wanted to play in the snow, he’d find a day to spend with her.
"In such cold weather, Damien Sterling doesn’t even have a down jacket. I should buy him one," Emma Hart thought as she glanced at Damien’s closet. It was filled with an array of flashy, custom-made high-end clothes, but not a single down jacket. She decided to buy him one.
That evening, when Damien returned home, Emma was eager to share her purchase.
"Damien, I bought you a down jacket. I noticed you didn’t have one in your closet. While I was out buying formula for the baby, I picked one up for you. Do you like it? If not, you can exchange it," Emma said excitedly as she approached him.
"A down jacket? I never wear such things. It’s ugly and lacks taste," Damien replied, glancing at it dismissively. But inside, he was overjoyed. He had always hoped Emma would buy him a gift, especially to show off to Logan Harrington, who constantly flaunted the gifts Amelia Davidson gave him. Emma usually hesitated to buy him anything, feeling awkward about spending his money. But now, she seemed to have gotten the idea.
"Alright, I’ll return it tomorrow," Emma said, disappointment evident in her voice.
"Let’s eat. After dinner, we should get some sleep," Damien quickly changed the subject, noticing her dismay.
"Okay," Emma replied, puzzled. Damien usually didn’t go to bed so early.
The night was filled with passion.
"So this is what he had in mind. We didn’t stop all night. Only someone like Damien with such stamina could keep up, but I’m completely worn out. My whole body aches. How am I supposed to have a snowball fight today?" Emma thought the next morning as she woke up, her body too sore to get out of bed.
"You keep sleeping. I need to go to the office. Wait for me at home tonight," Damien said, getting up and heading to the bathroom.
Despite calling it ugly, Damien wore the down jacket Emma bought him first thing in the morning. He wanted to show it off to Logan Harrington, who often boasted about the gifts from Amelia. Damien had been waiting for a chance to outshine him.
In the office.
"Lucy Allen... Ah-choo! Did your heating break down today? Ah-choo!" Logan Harrington sneezed repeatedly as he walked into Sterling Group, shivering from the cold.
"No, Mr. Sterling ordered the heating to be turned off," Lucy Allen replied with a blank expression before turning on her heel and walking away.
"Damien Sterling, have you lost your mind? Turning off the heat on such a cold day? Are you trying to save money or..." Logan’s voice trailed off as he approached Damien’s office and caught sight of him. The words he had been about to say were swallowed back in sheer astonishment.
"You, you... What are you wearing? Aren’t you the one who hates dressing like this? Didn’t you always say it looked ugly? And that you hated wearing anything bulky because it was too cumbersome?" Logan couldn’t believe his eyes. Was this really the Damien Sterling he knew? Wearing a down jacket?
"You wouldn’t understand," Damien said, glancing up briefly before returning to his work.
"Hahaha, I get it now. Emma Hart gave you that, didn’t she? Only your little sweetheart would pick out a gift like that. And you’re actually wearing it," Logan said, laughing. He was quick to put the pieces together.
"Little sweetheart?" Damien paused at the name, repeating it a few times under his breath. It was a fitting nickname.
"Of course, little sweetheart! She’s so sweet and delicate, just like a little bun, isn’t she?" Logan continued, unaware of how his words were affecting Damien.
Damien simply smiled, thinking about Emma. The nickname, despite its simplicity, perfectly captured her essence.
