Chapter 320: Kevin Garcia Appears at the Hospital
"What’s Kevin Garcia doing over there?" Damien Sterling asked.
"Kevin Garcia has invested in several top-ranked entertainment venues in College Town. He also owns a nightclub called ’Hong Bar,’ which is where the new drug ’Roving Angel’ is being distributed. And..." The assistant hesitated.
"Continue," Damien Sterling commanded.
"Yes, sir. According to our sources, Mrs. Sterling’s brother, Max, gets all his drugs from Kevin Garcia’s nightclub."
"And what about the two punks who brought Max into the club? Have we found them?" Damien Sterling asked thoughtfully.
"Yes, Mr. Sterling, we have. We’ve confirmed that they were paid by Kevin Garcia to take Max into the club. We’ve also placed them under constant surveillance," the assistant, who had been with Damien Sterling for many years, responded, understanding the next steps almost intuitively.
"Excellent! Your loyalty over the years hasn’t been in vain. You know what to do next, right?" Damien Sterling made a slicing motion across his neck.
"Yes, Mr. Sterling. Rest assured, I’ll handle it." Satisfied with this response, Damien Sterling prepared to return to the hospital room.
After Damien left, the assistant quickly texted the operatives watching the two punks: "It’s time."
The clock had struck for the two punks, sealing their fate.
Damien Sterling’s assistant executed the task flawlessly. The bodies would never be found; they would simply vanish from memory.
"Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Harris asked me to bring dinner for you, Mrs. Sterling, and the young master," the Sterling family’s driver said, preparing to knock on the hospital room door as Damien Sterling approached.
"Thank you," Damien Sterling said, taking the food from the driver. Before entering, he asked, "Did Mrs. Harris go out shopping today?"
"No, she didn’t," the driver replied.
"From now on, whenever Mrs. Harris goes shopping, follow her discreetly. Report back to me on whom she meets and speaks with. Understood?" Damien Sterling ordered.
"Yes, Mr. Sterling," the driver answered respectfully.
Could it be that Damien Sterling suspected Mrs. Harris? The driver wondered.
In the hospital room, Damien Sterling ordered his assistant to have the groceries Mrs. Harris brought tested for any abnormalities. They ate the meal the assistant had bought instead.
"Why are you doing this?" Emma Hart asked, visibly shaken. Could Damien Sterling be suspecting Mrs. Harris?
"Emma, I’ve warned you about Kevin Garcia. He’s not someone to be trusted, and now he’s making his move," Damien Sterling replied coldly. He then explained everything that had happened, hoping Emma would stay vigilant in the future.
Loving someone isn’t about sheltering them; it’s about teaching them how to face life’s potential dangers. Constantly saving her isn’t as effective as teaching her how to save herself.
Emma Hart shivered after hearing this.
"Ah! By the way—"
"Knock, knock!"
Emma’s words were cut off by a knock at the door.
"Come in," Emma said.
"Long time no see, Damien, Emma." It was Mr. Sterling Senior, with Kevin Garcia smiling behind him.
"We two old men heard little Joshua is sick, so we brought some toys for him," Mr. Sterling Senior said as he hurried to Joshua’s side. "Oh, my poor Joshua!"
"Grandpa, don’t worry. Joshua is much better than yesterday. The doctor said he might be able to leave in about a week," Emma reassured him, understanding the old man’s concern for his grandson.
Mr. Sterling Senior finally relaxed after hearing Emma’s words.
"Grandpa, Mr. Garcia, please have a seat," Damien Sterling, ever polite, invited them to sit.
Kevin Garcia exchanged a few pleasantries but remained mostly silent, sitting on the sofa with a constant smile. Only Emma Hart noticed the momentary flash of malice in his eyes when she mentioned Joshua’s improvement, which made her knees go weak with fear.
Mr. Sterling Senior and Kevin Garcia didn’t stay long. As they were about to leave, Mr. Sterling Senior mentioned they had another reason for being at the hospital. He needed to get his heart checked, as he had been feeling unwell recently. Shortly after, Mr. Sterling Senior and Kevin Garcia left Joshua’s room, and as the door closed, Emma Hart saw Kevin Garcia glance back one last time.
After Damien Sterling watched through the small window in the hospital door to make sure they were gone, he meticulously inspected every spot Kevin Garcia had touched. Emma Hart clutched Joshua tightly, still shaken by Kevin Garcia’s sinister glances. How could someone be so terrifying? He must be the true devil!
Satisfied that everything was in order, Damien Sterling urgently dialed Ryan Garcia’s number. "Where are you right now?"
Ryan Garcia answered, "I’m on my way to the hospital with my mom. You know her health... it’s been getting worse."
Damien’s voice trembled, "You need to go home immediately. I’ll come over tonight."
Sensing the urgency in Damien’s voice, Ryan Garcia became anxious. He changed lanes at the next intersection and headed home.
"Ryan? What’s going on?" Brianna Baker noticed the sudden change in direction and looked confused.
"Uh, a friend just called. The specialist you were supposed to see had an emergency. We’ll go back home, and he’ll reschedule the appointment," Ryan replied, not wanting to alarm his mother.
"Oh... alright," Brianna replied.
Throughout the drive, Ryan was visibly tense, running three red lights and nearly causing a rear-end collision once. His unease stemmed from hearing Damien’s voice shake—something that never happened unless Damien sensed imminent danger.
Brianna Baker, reading her son’s body language, felt her own anxiety rise. As a mother, she was deeply worried. But since Ryan was unwilling to explain further, she refrained from pressing him. She didn’t like to force her children; she trusted that Ryan had his reasons for keeping silent.
The hospital room was silent. The white walls bore two small digital clocks, both showing it was already twelve-thirty. Emma Hart had fallen asleep early on the large, soft caretaker bed beside Joshua’s hospital bed. Damien Sterling sat on the sofa, having just put down his phone after working on it all day.
He slowly closed his eyes, trying to smooth the tension out of his furrowed brow with his fingers, then pinched the bridge of his high, prominent nose. He couldn’t shake off the day’s nerve-wracking events, still feeling unsettled.
