Chapter 319: The Baby is Hospitalized

Christmas was approaching, and the streets were bustling with activity. At Sterling Group, everyone was in a frenzy, working tirelessly to secure the last multi-million dollar deal of the year and earn their year-end bonuses. They were so busy they wished they could split themselves in two and turn each day into 48 hours.

Emma Hart, Mrs. Harris, and the household staff were equally busy preparing for the New Year. Every day was a whirlwind of activity.

Damien Sterling had been coming home very late recently, sometimes at midnight, sometimes at two, sometimes at four, or even staying overnight at the office. Tonight was no different; he returned home long after everyone had gone to bed.

Exhausted, Damien stripped off his clothes, too tired to change into pajamas, knowing the house was well-heated. His muscular frame slipped under the covers, and he immediately fell asleep, embracing the soft body beside him.

But it wasn’t long before loud noises filled the room, and the warm yellow lights flickered on.

"Damien Sterling! Damien Sterling! Wake up!" Emma’s familiar voice, tinged with panic and tears, pierced his sleep.

Damien sat up instantly, seeing Emma’s red-rimmed eyes. "Damien! Joshua, he’s been vomiting non-stop. What do we do?" she cried, clinging to his arm.

"What are you waiting for? Call an ambulance!" Damien shouted, jolted into action. He grabbed his phone, summoning an ambulance and ensuring a clear route from the hospital to the Sterling estate.

Emma held the crying, vomiting Joshua, trying to comfort him while tears streamed down her face. Within five minutes, the ambulance arrived, and they rushed to the hospital, leaving Mrs. Harris to care for Gabriel at home.

At the hospital, Joshua was taken into the emergency consultation room. Normally, only the emergency department would be operating at this hour, but Damien’s call had summoned three pediatric specialists.

Joshua was diagnosed with malrotation of the intestines, but thanks to the swift treatment, he was much better. As a precaution, he was admitted to the pediatric VIP suite, where he had 24-hour care from doctors and nurses.

Emma and Damien stayed by Joshua’s side all night, each on one side of his bed, standing guard and eventually falling asleep, exhausted but relieved.

At six in the morning, Damien Sterling’s internal clock woke him right on schedule. He gently stroked the sleeping Joshua’s head, admiring his angelic and adorable face.

A nurse carefully opened the door to the hospital room. She knew that Mr. and Mrs. Sterling had spent the entire night there and didn’t want to disturb them. However, it was time for the baby’s IV, and she had no choice but to enter.

As soon as she stepped in, her eyes met Damien’s. His face, usually stoic, was now marked with dark circles from the sleepless night, making his expression even more intimidating. His cold gaze was so intense that it almost gave the nurse chills, despite it being broad daylight.

The nurse bowed respectfully to Damien before approaching Joshua to insert the IV needle. Damien stood up, carefully lifting the still-sleeping Emma Hart and gently placing her on the nearby sofa. He then asked the nurse to bring a blanket to cover her.

Damien stepped out of the room, his mind racing. Today’s meetings were unavoidable, but he couldn’t leave Emma alone at the hospital with their child. He instructed his assistant to convert all in-person meetings to virtual ones and to reschedule all internal company meetings for the morning.

The sudden change in plans shocked the company directors. They knew how tirelessly Damien had been working to expand Sterling Group’s overseas market, pushing himself to the brink of exhaustion. They worried about the toll it was taking on his health.

After finalizing the new arrangements, Damien returned to the room to find Emma awake.

"Where did you go? I wake up and you’re gone," Emma pouted, clearly displeased.

Seeing her pout, a rare sight of her acting spoiled, lifted a weight off Damien’s shoulders.

"I’ll stay at the hospital with you today to help take care of Joshua, but I might need to step out for a few meetings," Damien said with a loving smile.

"Thank you, honey," Emma whispered as she sat up and hugged Damien, her voice soft in his ear.

"Say that again. I love hearing it," Damien murmured, pulling Emma into his arms and gently stroking her hair.

Emma playfully hit Damien’s back, feeling shy. This man always knew how to push her buttons!

The nurse stood dutifully outside the VIP room, occasionally sneaking glances at the couple. She sighed, thinking how lucky Mrs. Sterling was to have such a handsome, wealthy, and caring husband, not to mention their adorable twin sons. Surely, Mrs. Sterling must have done something extraordinary in a past life to deserve such happiness.

What the nurse didn’t know was that Emma’s happiness had been hard-earned, a result of enduring and overcoming many challenges.

At the Sterling family villa, Mrs. Harris carefully packed a nutritious breakfast into thermal containers, ready for the driver to deliver to Damien Sterling and Emma Hart at the hospital. Of course, she also prepared a portion for young Joshua.

Back at the villa, Mrs. Harris was particularly vigilant in looking after little Gabriel, terrified that he might also fall ill and jeopardize her job. How could Joshua have been fine before bed and then become so sick in the middle of the night?

The meals were always prepared according to the strict dietary guidelines provided by Mr. Sterling’s professional nutritionist. The only deviation was yesterday at the market when Ella Moore helped her with some groceries. Could it be? Mrs. Harris quickly dismissed the thought as implausible. Why would Ella Moore do such a thing, and how could she have managed it?

At the hospital, Damien Sterling had finished his morning meetings and was now playing with Joshua, who was gradually getting better, alongside Emma. Just then, his assistant knocked on the door and entered.

"Mr. Sterling, I’ve found out what you asked me to investigate," the assistant reported.

"Good. I’ll be right there," Damien said, kissing Emma on the forehead before stepping out of the room.

"What did you find?" Damien asked as soon as they were outside.

"Mr. Sterling, our investigation into the entertainment venues around University Town revealed a very familiar individual who has been quite active in that area," the assistant began.

"This person is Kevin Garcia, chairman of Garcia Group," the assistant concluded, delivering the crucial piece of information. Damien rubbed his chin thoughtfully. It was just as he had suspected.
