Chapter 292: Turmoil on New Year’s Eve
After watching the New Year’s Eve concert, life finally settled down, regardless of how the past year had gone. Everyone, weary from the day’s activities, retired to their rooms amidst the sounds of fireworks.
Mr. Sterling Senior, a man of discerning taste, ensured that the villa was furnished with solid wood, free of formaldehyde, decorated in the style of ancient scholars.
"Ah! I’m utterly exhausted!" Emma Hart collapsed onto the sofa in her room in a near-paralytic state.
"You’ve eaten the most and sat the longest tonight; how can you, of all people, complain of tiredness?" Damien Sterling teased as he unfastened his tie.
Emma Hart glanced at Damien Sterling, who was putting on quite the display. His physique was as breathtaking as ever.
"What were you and Grandpa talking about tonight?" Emma asked.
"Wow, getting nosy, aren’t we?" Damien responded, his white shirt completely unbuttoned revealing his well-defined abs, as he playfully pinned Emma to the bed.
"I was just asking! What are you doing, trying to seduce a pregnant woman?" Emma quickly turned her blushing face away.
Damien looked at the shy, adorable figure before him, his heart skipping a beat, a mischievous smile playing on his lips as he turned toward the bathroom. Seduce her? It was debatable who was seducing whom.
The room, bathed in a soft orange glow, felt cozy and romantic. From the bathroom came the continuous sound of the shower. Emma sat at the desk, sketching out her clothing designs on a small piece of white paper. Time was short, and she needed to finalize the designs for the tailor.
"Emma Hart! Towel!" Damien called from the bathroom.
"Oh!" She quickly pulled a clean towel from the cabinet for him.
"Ah!" Emma almost slipped, momentarily forgetting she wasn’t on the plush carpet of her home. In her haste, she nearly fell, but Damien’s quick reflexes saved her.
"What are you doing! Don’t you know you’re pregnant? How could you be so careless!" Damien exclaimed.
"I’m sorry, it wasn’t on purpose," Emma replied, her voice soft and trembling like a frightened little rabbit.
"What happened, Damien, Emma?" The loud noise alarmed Brianna Baker, who lived next door.
"It’s nothing, Auntie, please go back to sleep!" Damien Sterling called out toward the doorway.
Thinking it was just the young couple’s usual squabbles, Brianna decided not to intervene further. Returning to her own room, she put on her headphones and drifted into her own world, reminiscing about the sweet times of her past romance.
The scare had unexpectedly eased Emma Hart’s nerves, releasing the tension she had been carrying from working at the desk. She removed her makeup and headed into the bathroom. Meanwhile, Damien donned a silk pajama and lay in bed, discussing the next day’s schedule with his assistant.
The bathroom filled with thick steam and the scent of rose-scented body wash. Emma gently wiped the fog from the mirror with her pale hand.
She noticed her reflection, now visibly seven months pregnant. Her body had grown fuller, her arms and legs plumper, and her belly significantly larger, almost enough to host a couple of tables for mahjong.
Sighing, she wondered what the future held for the child. She hoped it wouldn’t inherit its father’s notorious temper.
She slipped into a cashmere nightgown and left the bathroom. The room was dark except for the dim glow of the bedside lamp. Damien was still on the phone in bed.
She quietly climbed into bed, and just as he hung up, they exchanged goodnights and turned off the light.
During the night, Emma struggled to sleep in an unfamiliar bed, trying long and hard to settle without disturbing Damien, who was already asleep. Afraid to turn over and wake him, she lay stiff until her body felt numb.
She slid out of bed, tiptoed to the bathroom to splash water on her face, and then returned to bed. Counting sheep, she finally fell asleep.
In her dreams, she fell from a huge ship into the ocean. The overwhelming, merciless embrace of the sea water stifled her, causing chest discomfort. Gasping for air, she startled Damien awake.
"Emma Hart! Emma Hart! What’s wrong?" Damien gently shook Emma, trying to wake her.
Emma’s legs jerked as she came to, overcome with a wave of intense nausea that seized her chest and head. She rushed to the bathroom and bent over the toilet, retching.
Damien Sterling took a few steps to stand behind Emma Hart, gently stroking her back as he anxiously asked, "Are you feeling any better?"
Seeing no response from Emma, he quickly dialed for emergency services, and soon an ambulance arrived at the villa.
The commotion woke everyone. Emma was lifted onto a stretcher, and Damien, along with Ryan Garcia and Harper Clark, accompanied her to the hospital.
Throughout the journey, Damien held Emma’s hand tightly, never letting go. Harper leaned against Ryan and dozed off.
In the VIP hospital room, Damien urgently asked the doctor, "What exactly is wrong with my wife?"
"Mr. Sterling, please be assured, Mrs. Sterling is just experiencing some minor pregnancy symptoms, perhaps due to overeating and insufficient exercise, which caused her nausea. She just needs to be careful and manage her health when she returns home," the doctor explained.
"Thank you, Doctor," Damien, Ryan, and Harper responded in unison.
"Of course. Also, Mrs. Sterling is in the late stages of pregnancy. You should bring her in regularly for prenatal check-ups and start preparing," the doctor said with a smile.
Seeing the doctor’s cheerful demeanor, Damien and his friends were somewhat puzzled.
"Congratulations, Mr. Sterling! Mrs. Sterling is expecting twins!" the doctor announced.
"Twins!" Ryan’s reaction was even more ecstatic than Damien’s.
"She’s so slim, and her belly so small, yet she’s carrying twins?" Ryan blurted out, oblivious to Damien’s glare.
"Didn’t I just mention it? You’ll need to be careful with her diet moving forward because Mrs. Sterling has some issues absorbing nutrients, which is why the babies are growing slower and are smaller," the doctor replied.
"Understood, thank you, Doctor," Damien said, his eyes brimming with joy and pride.
"My goodness, twins!" Harper exclaimed, thrilled. "Mr. Sterling, you must tell Grandfather Sterling about this right away! He’ll be overjoyed!"
"Right," Damien agreed absent-mindedly, eager to get back to the hospital room. He watched Emma, who was asleep, and tenderly stroked her soft, dark hair.
"Hmm? What’s going on?" Emma stirred and looked up at the three excited faces, her expression turning from sleepy to puzzled.
