Chapter 28: Provoking Him Time and Again

Chapter 28: Provoking Him Time and Again

When Mrs. Harris returned to Emma Hart’s bedside with a fresh bowl of porridge, she cast a fleeting glance at the still defiant Emma lying in bed.

With a sigh, she turned to look at Damien Sterling, awaiting his orders.

Damien, with his gaze lowered, his expression inscrutable, asked, "Still refusing to eat?"

Emma Hart had no intention of acknowledging Damien Sterling.

Gazing down at Emma, who lay in the bed, Damien Sterling wore a mischievous smile, akin to a monarch surveying his realm.

With a hint of scorn, he remarked, "It’s only been a day."

With that, Damien Sterling strode out of the room.

Mrs. Harris, worried, followed him out. "Sir, Miss Emma..."

"Mrs. Harris, it’s fine not to eat for a day or two," Damien said coldly.

Mrs. Harris hesitated to say more, knowing well that she had reached her limits and understanding Damien Sterling’s temperament.

Back in the room, Emma Hart’s face was pale, her lips cracked.

Mrs. Harris brought water to her lips, but Emma weakly shook her head.

Tears threatened to fall from Mrs. Harris’s eyes again. She thought of her own child, around the same age as Emma.

If Emma were her daughter, the pain would be unbearable.

"Miss Emma, please," Mrs. Harris begged, her voice choked with emotion.

"Think of your mother... if she saw you like this..." Unable to continue, she wiped away her tears.

Emma Hart, not wanting to see Mrs. Harris in such a state and thinking of her own mother, felt a pang of guilt.

She was at a loss in this dire situation, not even sure herself what to do.

Emma Hart slightly opened her mouth, and Mrs. Harris, delighted, held up a cup of water to her lips. "That’s right, good girl, have some water."

"Mrs. Harris, I’d like to be alone for a bit," Emma whispered.

Mrs. Harris glanced at the bowl of untouched porridge, recalling Damien Sterling’s words.

"Then rest a while, dear. Call me if you need anything. I’ll check on you later. The porridge is here when you’re hungry, okay Miss Emma?"

Emma nodded, her heart warmed by Mrs. Harris’s caring gesture.

Early the next morning, Mrs. Harris brought over a basin to wash Emma’s face, only to find the porridge on the table still untouched.

How can she be so stubborn? Mrs. Harris thought, worried.

Helping the increasingly frail Emma sit up, Mrs. Harris felt her light weight.

It was the third day of her fasting. How much longer can this go on?

"Miss Emma, let me wipe your face. Don’t you like the porridge? I can make something else you like," Mrs. Harris asked softly, her touch gentle as if afraid of hurting Emma.

Emma’s fragile form was pitiable.

She shook her head, her eyes still filled with endless melancholy.

Her once vibrant eyes now looked dim, and her delicate face seemed as withered as a dried flower.

At noon, the sound of a car horn outside - could it be Damien Sterling? He never came home at this hour.

Mrs. Harris was startled when suddenly, with a loud bang, Damien Sterling burst into the room, clearly in a rush.

Upon entering, his gaze immediately fell on the untouched bowl and chopsticks on the table.

A moment later, his eyes filled with a cold, stern look.

Anger clouded his handsome face, spreading a chilling aura throughout the room.

It’s been three days, and she still hasn’t eaten? Is she really courting death?

He had assumed that once she got hungry enough, she would eat.
