Chapter 256: Continue Your Worth
Chapter 256: Continue Your Worth
"I am not being unreasonable!" Emma Hart said indignantly, frustrated at how Damien Sterling could accuse her of such a thing.
"Go home and rest!" Damien Sterling continued in a cold tone, his gaze fixed on Emma who seemed somewhat out of control, yet his voice maintained a chilly, yet oddly serene quality.
"Mr. Sterling, once I’ve safely had the child, I suppose I’ll be of no further use?" Emma Hart suddenly realized how sad it truly was; in Damien’s eyes, she was perhaps nothing more than a surrogate, a role any other woman could fulfill. He had merely chosen her for the task, and that was that. Anyone could take her place!
"If you wish, you can continue to prove your worth," Damien said softly.
She didn’t want to, though. Wasn’t she planning to leave this man? Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Yet why was there this sudden knot in her heart? Where did this sense of loss come from?
It certainly has nothing to do with him! Emma kept telling herself, adamant that leaving was her ultimate goal.
But strangely, she couldn’t control herself. Saying those words seemed like a declaration of freedom, yet why did they make her so sad?
How could Emma understand that Damien Sterling’s offer to "continue your value" was his highest form of acknowledgment? And why wouldn’t he say anything to keep her?
"I don’t need to be someone who can easily be replaced!" Emma blurted out, unaware of where her words came from. As she spoke, her body began to tremble slightly.
What was the point of a replaceable identity and status? Was it human greed, or had things subtly shifted without notice?
"What do you want to be, then?" Damien Sterling looked at Emma, his piercing eyes sharp and scrutinizing.
Emma met Damien’s gaze, her eyes shimmering with tears that thankfully hadn’t yet fallen. Why was she so powerless in front of this man?
"As long as it has nothing to do with you, I can be anything!"
Damien Sterling’s face broke into a wanton smile, "This is something you can’t change; you’ll always be the mother of my child!"
"How do you know this child is yours?" Emma Hart glared at Damien Sterling, a slight, disdainful smile playing at her lips as she regarded him.
Will her child really be happy? With a father like him, or even a mother like her, could the child truly lead a good life?
Her words were spoken in anger, and how could Damien Sterling not have checked? It was their first time together, and the timing of the pregnancy matched their time together. Moreover, Damien had never doubted this fact himself.
Yet, hearing her casual words ignited a fury in Damien. His eyes, like deep abysses, frightening Emma with his bloodthirsty aura. His face twisted with an unspeakable terror.
She had angered him again.
Emma Hart turned abruptly, refusing to look at his enraged face any longer, and hurriedly walked out of the office, taking two steps at a time towards the door.
Inside Amelia Davidson’s car.
Logan Harrington was about to get in when Amelia rebuked him, "What are you doing?"
"Getting in the car, what else?"
Seeing Amelia’s puzzled expression, Logan leaned in, only to be pushed away forcefully, twisting his face, "Get out!"
Amelia let go, and Logan, placing his hand on his face, closed his eyes, savoring the touch he had just felt from Amelia, a revolting smile on his face, "I’m never washing this face again!"
"Ugh, you’re disgusting!" Amelia exclaimed, her tone less hostile than before.
Logan began buckling his seatbelt while Amelia watched his practiced movements, turning to him, "When did I ever agree to this?"
"Didn’t you?"
"Did I?" Amelia looked helpless.
Logan pretended to ponder seriously, then his shameless smile returned, "Yes, you did."
"No, I didn’t!" Amelia said coldly, "Besides, your car is parked right there. Why are you riding with me? I have plans later!"
Logan glanced at his sports car; to him, any car was trivial in front of a goddess. To ride in her car, what did his own car matter?
Logan, now completely focused on Amelia, declared, "Then I’ll be your driver!"
"Not necessary!"
Seeing his plan fail, Logan coughed, shifting gears as if he was another person, suddenly serious, "I am actually a hero in this matter."
How did he become a hero? Anything can be related to him, Amelia Davidson looked at Logan Harrington with an inexplicable expression.
Logan Harrington earnestly began to explain, "Think about it, if it weren’t for that day..." As he spoke, Logan cast a flirtatious wink at Amelia Davidson, reminiscing about the day he had dramatically pinned her against the wall, seemingly lost in the fond memory.
Amelia Davidson raised her fist, ready to strike, "Shut up!"
Logan immediately bowed his head like a chastened child, conceding, "Alright, alright, I’ll stop. Anyway, it was because of that thing I did, that you were going to delete the surveillance footage." As Logan spoke, he paused, suddenly puzzled, and then looked at Amelia as if realizing something, staring at her intently for a long moment.
Amelia felt uneasy under Logan’s inexplicable gaze, pulling down the visor to check her face in the mirror. Every woman fears ruining her makeup!
"What, afraid I’ll find you ugly? Don’t worry, I like you no matter what!" Logan patted his chest and professed his feelings once again, though such confessions had never been reciprocated.
"Stop the nonsense!" This was typically Amelia’s most straightforward and brutal response.
Logan chuckled mischievously, giving Amelia a roguish look as he scrutinized her again, "I’m curious! Why did you save the video?"
Everyone else had forgotten about the incident, even Logan had only just remembered. Normally, why would anyone save a video clip after deciding to delete it? Could it be that there were some precious memories worth preserving?
Under Logan’s intense scrutiny, Amelia’s expression grew increasingly awkward. At that moment, her only thought had been a reluctant reluctance to erase the footage—nothing more! So, she had saved it instead.
Now, Amelia couldn’t believe she had been the one to copy the surveillance video. Her hands began to tremble, even mistakenly shifting gears.
Catching sight of Amelia’s flustered actions, Logan felt a secret thrill of delight. Unable to hide his feelings, he burst into an unrestrained laugh and pursued his inquiry, "Tell me, have you fallen for me?"
Logan looked at Amelia expectantly.
Amelia suddenly floored the accelerator, her lips pressed tightly together. Beside her, Logan was nearly thrown forward, hastily grabbing the handle, his eyes wide as he watched Amelia, who drove like a race car driver, disheveled by the wind.
