Chapter 255: Why Not Stand Up and Admit It?
Emma Hart felt a surge of guilt, confessing to Amelia Davidson, "It’s all my fault, Amelia."
"Enough!" Amelia Davidson replied impatiently, placing a finger to her lips. "Let’s put this behind us and never speak of it again."
Emma nodded, glancing over at Logan Harrington nearby. "I never expected Logan Harrington to actually step up like a real man this time," she said with a chuckle.
She had thought that after being repeatedly put down by Amelia, Logan would lose interest and move on. Surprisingly, he had stood up to defend Amelia, showing a rare seriousness.
With someone like Logan Harrington, it was hard to tell if he was just playing around. People like him were often labeled as playboys—never serious about anything. The worst fear was when you started to take things seriously, they’d tell you they were just having fun.
Emma looked at Amelia Davidson, whose youthful appearance belied the subtle traces of worry that revealed the long, fearful journey she had endured. This was probably why Amelia had been hesitant and resistant to Logan’s advances for so long.
Amelia slowly turned her gaze towards Logan, her eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions, visibly touched by his persistence.
"Hey, what are you looking at?" Emma teased.
Startled, Amelia quickly fixed the loose strands of hair falling over her face. "Nothing, let’s go out and unwind," she suggested.
Logan glanced their way and hurried to catch up, playfully slapping their shoulders as if about to embrace them both.
"Hey, where are the two beauties off to?" Logan joked, his demeanor always light-hearted and unserious.
Amelia glanced sharply at Logan’s hand on her shoulder, glaring at him. Logan, grinning, slowly removed his hand.
"Sorry, just a force of habit with the guys..."
Emma mimicked Amelia’s stern look, glaring at Logan. Logan glanced back at her and suddenly remembered Damien Sterling’s cold expression, hastily removing his arm from her shoulder as if shocked by an electric jolt.
Emma’s phone rang—it was a text from Damien Sterling, summoning her to his office. Annoyed by the reminder of earlier events, she shoved her phone into her pocket, only for it to vibrate again. Another message from the same man: "You have three minutes to appear in front of me."
"Just his usual tactics!" Emma scoffed internally. Damien Sterling’s whole repertoire seemed limited to these "three-minute" ultimatums, a pattern unchanged from the past.
In Damien Sterling’s office, Sophia Greenwood sat directly across from him, her demeanor calm and composed. Damien, with his legs crossed, watched her intently before breaking the silence. "Who let the news of her pregnancy slip?"
His gaze was icy, suspicion evident as he stared at Sophia. But Sophia, well aware of Damien’s doubts and having anticipated them, remained unaffected by the misunderstanding. With a gentle and composed voice, she reassured him, "Darling Damien, although I was aware of the situation, I’m not without discretion. I’ve looked into it, and it turns out that Zoe, the newcomer in the design department, came to know of Emma Hart’s situation and it somehow got out at the office. So..."
Her voice softened further, a look of pitiable innocence crossing her face as she continued, "This has nothing to do with me. I have dedicated many years to the company, valuing Sterling Group’s interests as if they were my own, darling Damien..."
Damien nodded, his mind clearly elsewhere and not in the mood to listen further. "Alright, I understand," he dismissed.
Sophia had barely left the office when Emma Hart entered, their shoulders brushing at the doorway. Sophia’s eyes held undiminished disdain for Emma, who naturally preferred to avoid further issues. Her head bowed, she entered Damien’s office with a look of defeat – an expression reserved only for Sophia, knowing well the contempt Sophia held for her.
Once inside, Emma’s demeanor shifted dramatically; her face fell into a sulk, a frown marking her expression.
Emma couldn’t recall when she had become so bold in front of Damien, daring to show him a displeased face. But deep down, she was truly heartbroken and felt abandoned, especially since Damien had provided no support when she needed him most.
With such a man, she wondered, was it even worth continuing this charade?
"What is it, Mr. Sterling? Did you need to see me?" Emma Hart asked politely, her courteous tone not quite reflecting her true feelings.
Damien Sterling glanced at Emma, noticing her trembling lips and distant eyes. His voice was icy as he inquired, "Is everything taken care of?"
What did he mean by ’everything’? Her mess? He was there, he saw everything. Why even ask?
Emma remained silent, overwhelmed by a sense of disillusionment with Damien’s actions. Had he ever given her any reason to hope?
Noticing her silence, Damien set his pen down and suggested, "You should take this opportunity to go home and rest."
"I am fine, I don’t need to rest," Emma replied sharply, the frustration still burning inside her.
"Can’t you hear me, Emma Hart?" Damien’s voice grew stern, his eyes narrowing.
Taken aback, Emma looked up, her eyes just as angry. Was he the only one allowed to be upset?
"Mr. Sterling? Are you worried about the child again? If you’re so concerned, why don’t you stand up and admit it?"
"Admit what?" Damien felt a surge of anger at her words.
Emma’s lips twitched as she continued coldly, "Admit that the child I’m carrying has a father! Admit that you are the father!"
Damien realized what she was implying, yet how could she know what his intentions and reasons were for acting the way he did? If Amelia Davidson had been even slightly delayed...
At that moment, Emma felt utterly wronged. It seemed to her that Damien had gone downstairs just to enjoy the spectacle. A single word from him, even a mere gesture, could have cleared her name. Why did he put her through all this? Wasn’t he fond of playing the hero?
"Emma Hart, I’m warning you, stop making a scene!" Damien’s voice dropped to a cold whisper.
Making a scene? Emma found it almost laughable. After all, who was really causing the trouble here?
