Chapter 24: The Final Bottom Line
Emma Hart glanced at Mrs. Harris, trying her best not to put her in a difficult position. "It’s the manager from where I work. I can put it on speaker."
Answering the call, Emma was immediately met with a barrage of reproaches. "Emma Hart, you’ve been absent for three days now! We’re severely understaffed, and everyone’s swamped. Our store isn’t a charity organization, and you can’t just come and go as you please!"
"I’m really sorry, Manager. I’ve had some issues to deal with. Please, could you give me a little more time? I promise I’ll be back at work in a few days," Emma pleaded, her voice tinged with desperation.
Her other two jobs had already dismissed her over the past couple of days.
This was her last remaining job, and it paid well. Losing this job would be disastrous...
"What? A few more days? Enough, Emma Hart. If you can’t come to work by tomorrow, don’t bother coming back at all! This is your final warning!" With that, the manager ended the call in a huff.
"Hello, Manager..." Emma’s arm fell limply to her side, her gaze empty and desolate.
Damien Sterling, this is all because of you! Meeting this man had thrown her entire life into disarray.
Despite the hardships and the lack of wealth in her life, Emma had always believed that she could change her circumstances through hard work.
But now, everything had been shattered by her encounter with Damien Sterling.
In the evening, as soon as Damien Sterling walked through the door, Emma confronted him, "When are you going to let me go?"
"After you give birth to the child," James Hamilton responded coldly.
Emma Hart was deeply displeased with Damien Sterling’s dismissive attitude. With a hostile tone, she exclaimed, "I’m leaving tomorrow!"
"You dare!" Damien’s eyes, cold and furious, bore into Emma. How dare she speak to him in such a manner? Who had given her such audacity?
Mrs. Harris, witnessing their quarrel, was visibly shaken and lost for what to do.
"I will leave whether you permit it or not!"
"Let’s see if you have the ability to leave then," Damien said, his face twisting into a mocking sneer.
Emma was well aware that Damien had placed guards around the villa.
Observing during the day, she noticed several men in black ensuring the place was tightly secured.
Learning from her previous attempt, Damien would not let her leave easily.
This man was truly detestable!
"Damien Sterling, not everyone is born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Some of us need to work for a living. You may treat money like dirt, but sorry, we can’t afford to!"
Emma had never worked for her own sake. The debts left by her late father, the needs of her mother and grandmother, and her younger brother’s college tuition – all these burdens rested on her shoulders.
Hearing Emma’s outburst, Damien burst into laughter. "I thought you were genuinely indignant, but it’s just about money."
This woman was just finding ways to ask him for money. It seemed living comfortably here wasn’t enough; money was what mattered most. But Damien understood.
Casually pulling out a check from his pocket, he wrote a few digits with a grand gesture. "Half a million."
Emma watched as Damien’s face bore a contemptuous smile, his hand flaunting the check before her, each wave of it a humiliation. Did he truly believe money was omnipotent?
