Chapter 232: Haven’t I Given You Enough?

Emma Hart watched in disbelief as Damien Sterling effortlessly tossed the bouquet into the trash can, mixing it with the garbage. Outraged, she pointed at him and demanded, "Why did you throw away my flowers?"

Damien covered her pointing hand with his, feeling the coolness of her fingertips which tightened his heart with a pang of distress. He grasped her hand firmly, wanting to offer her some warmth, yet his voice was ice cold, "Why not? I always do things my way. Is that reason enough for you?"

Holding Emma’s hand, Damien felt the warmth spread from her fingertips throughout her body. He naturally pulled her hand down as if holding it in his own, and led her towards the car.

As the car drove smoothly, Emma remained silent, feeling the tumultuous undercurrents despite Damien’s seemingly calm demeanor. Cautiously, she lifted her head and sneaked a peek at him. Suddenly, Damien turned to her and asked indifferently, "What are you looking at?"

How did this man always know when Emma was watching him?

"I... wasn’t," Emma stammered, shrugging her shoulders before turning her head away.

As they neared the villa, located on a desolate hillside chosen by Damien for its seclusion, the beauty of the day gave way to a sinister atmosphere by night. The sparse streetlights guided them along the rugged mountain road.

"Who brought you back?" Damien suddenly broke the silence, startling Emma so much that her hand shook.

"I..."

"You came back by yourself?" Damien Sterling turned around and asked, and Emma Hart felt the man’s breath getting closer and closer to her.

Emma nodded timidly, fiddling nervously with her fingers. "Yes," she answered with little conviction, her hands twisting and turning. She felt incredibly uneasy, wondering how she could have answered perfectly.

After her response, Emma sat beside Damien, filled with dread, waiting for his reaction. Without any immediate feedback from him, she didn’t dare turn to look his way, feeling as though a chilling wind had swept through, and sensing that a pair of sharp eyes were fixed intently on her.

In a moment of eerie silence, Emma Hart felt the man beside her shift slightly and command, "Stop the car!"

Startled, Emma watched as the driver obeyed, pulling over to the side of the road. She leaned towards the window, peering out into the dense forest—devoid of even a single bird. What could he possibly need to stop here for?

Emma’s gaze returned to Damien Sterling. "What are you doing?"

"Just need to handle something," Damien replied calmly.

"What?" Emma couldn’t shake a growing unease. His nonchalant demeanor seemed to brew some ominous plot, sending a wave of dread through her.

Damien turned to face her, looking directly into her eyes. "Answer me again."

"What?"

"Who brought you back?" Damien pressed each word with an interrogative tone.

Where did he get the audacity to question her like this? What right did he have? It wasn’t just about who had brought her back or where she had been; it was about his actions tonight!

That’s right! A realization struck Emma, and she lifted her head to confront Damien. "And what about you, Mr. Sterling? Who did you take home tonight?"

He allowed himself to escort other women, to joyfully attend parties with them. Why should she be interrogated by him now? How dare he?

Damien tapped on the driver’s partition. The driver turned, and with a flick of Damien’s dismissive gesture, he understood immediately, opened the car door, bowed respectfully, and walked away.

Now alone with Damien in the car, the darkness outside seemed even more threatening. Had she misspoken with her last question?

Watching Damien’s darkening expression, Emma forced a light, teasing tone. "Where did you send the driver? Hope he doesn’t get carried off by wolves."

"Then you should switch places with him," Damien replied coldly.

Damien Sterling leaned towards Emma Hart, causing her instinctively to shrink back into the corner, pressing against the car window. "What are you doing?"

"What do you think?" he retorted.

As Emma inched backward, her hands defensively positioned in front, she challenged him, "Is it only permissible for you to act without restraint, while others cannot even light a candle? Why do you interrogate me like this?"

"Speaking the truth at last? It was that wild man who brought you back, wasn’t it?"

"People have names, you know?" Emma regretted her words as soon as they left her mouth. She was already his prey; why bother about how he addressed someone else? It was better she focus on her own safety.

Damien’s piercing gaze grew even more intense, each time Emma defended another man, his fury seemed to notch up a degree.

Emma met Damien’s fierce eyes but quickly looked away, overwhelmed. It was absurd—this man had also seen Sophia Greenwood and even attended a banquet with her. Why should Emma feel guilty, as if she had done something wrong?

"His name is Wild Man!" Damien insisted vehemently.

Fine, let him call what he wants, Emma thought, too weary to argue. Engaging with him would lead nowhere.

"Emma Hart, haven’t I given you enough already? Does it take just a small favor for you to follow someone else?" he accused. As Emma kept her gaze lowered, Damien impatiently lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him.

"I’ve received plenty from you, but it seems Mr. Sterling, you still haven’t gotten enough from me. Why didn’t you stay with your lady friend tonight?" Emma retorted sharply, her spirit unbroken despite being cornered.

Her defiant eyes remained unwavering; Damien loosened his grip on her hand. He had always liked her spirit, from the beginning until now. But at that moment, Damien enjoyed even more the hint of jealousy in her words.

"Jealous, are we?" Damien’s lips curled into a smirk, his earlier annoyance seemingly dissipated in an instant. Her slight display of temper added to his pleasure.

"Eat dirt!" Emma shot back, her disdain clear as she rubbed her jaw, irked by the increasing force of his grip.
