Chapter 183: Perfect Understanding

Chapter 183: Perfect Understanding

Amid the recommendations of numerous attendants, Emma Hart casually pointed to a selection, noting her past choices had been quite successful but perhaps too eye-catching for her taste.

"Let’s go with this black one," Emma decided, choosing a simple black gown that seemed modest enough not to stand out too much at the party.

Damien Sterling glanced at her choice, offering no comment, allowing her to pick as she pleased.

The attendant, pleased with the selection, quickly processed the gown, clearly accustomed to lavish spending without a second glance at the price.

Approaching Damien directly, the attendant saw an opportunity for efficiency.

Damien, without hesitation, pulled out his card and handed it over.

Emma was already used to such transactions. Besides, attending these high-end events wasn’t her norm but Damien’s invitation, making it only right that he covered the expenses.

Taking the gown from the attendant, Emma was ready to leave when Damien stopped outside a shop. "We haven’t gotten accessories yet."

"I have plenty at home," Emma responded.

"From when?" Damien inquired.

"From the last time you had them sent over," Emma replied nonchalantly, swinging the newly purchased dress bag back and forth, clearly uninterested in shopping further.

Damien eyed her for a moment before extending his hand towards Emma.

"What’s this?" Emma looked puzzled at his gesture.

Was he asking for money, suggesting she cover the cost of the gown she’d just selected? This thought prompted her to hurriedly check the price tag inside her purse.

Emma Hart was meticulously counting the zeros on the price tag of the dress when suddenly, the bag in her view was swiped away, and the price tag along with it.

She looked up to see Damien Sterling holding her bag, instructing her with a focused gaze, "Go pick out a necklace."

Emma was momentarily puzzled by his actions—was he actually carrying her bag for her?

Following the direction Damien pointed, Emma entered the store.

At the entrance, she paused, remembering her earlier statement about having plenty of unworn jewelry at home, "I mentioned earlier that I have many at home, many of which I’ve never worn. We really don’t need to buy more."

Her conviction wavered, knowing well that suggestions to Damien often went unheeded.

The jewelry bought last time was still neatly arranged in the jewelry box on her table, untouched. Damien’s solution to everything seemed to be just buying more, even though Emma hardly wore any of it.

"Old?" Damien frowned in distaste.

Emma nodded hesitantly, "You could say that."

But truthfully, those pieces were brand new, never having been worn by her.

"Change them!" Damien directed with a finger, his meaning clear.

Emma understood Damien’s unspoken standard; last month’s accessories were already deemed outdated for this month’s gala.

The attendant, sensing the high stakes, showcased several of the most expensive necklaces for Emma, ensuring she felt like the center of attention by Damien’s side.

"Miss Emma, please take a look at this one, it’s a limited edition."

Emma Hart smiled as she observed the row of pearls and diamonds, their brilliance undeniably lavish. Too extravagant for her taste, she thought.

Meanwhile, the attendant, beaming with a smile, showcased their recommendation, eyes filled with envy for Emma. In a gentle tone, they suggested, "This piece would perfectly match your temperament. It’s a designer piece, tailored just for you."

Emma wondered what kind of temperament the attendant saw in her. Did they see a temperament that suggested she was particularly timid? Tailored for her, as if she knew the designer personally?

Among the many necklaces, Emma wasn’t drawn to the pricier options but instead found herself attracted to a more understated diamond pendant necklace on a side counter. It was simple yet elegant, precisely the style she preferred.

Reaching out, Emma pointed to that necklace, and almost simultaneously, another hand reached for it. "This one!" they both exclaimed in unison, their eyes fixating on the necklace within the display.

Emma looked up, somewhat bewildered to find Damien Sterling behind her. When had their tastes aligned so closely?

Lowering her gaze, Emma bit her lip, unfamiliar with this kind of tacit understanding.

Damien, without a word, turned away, seemingly indifferent to the moment of unity.

At the yacht party.

Surrounded by the wealthy and luxury cars, alongside the latest in luxury and designer items, Emma had grown accustomed to such extravagance by Damien Sterling’s side.

Stepping out of the car, a gentle breeze caused Emma Hart to shiver slightly, a subtle reaction that Damien Sterling immediately noticed. "Cold?" he inquired.

Emma shook her head, admitting to herself it was indeed a bit chilly but still bearable.

Damien signaled to his assistant with a glance, who promptly retrieved a box from the trunk, producing a pale yellow shawl and handing it to Damien.

Emma watched this unfold, surprised at Damien’s thoroughness in preparation.

As Emma reached out to take the shawl from Damien, he swept past her hand, draping the shawl over her with assertiveness, "Gotta protect my child!"

It seemed the child had become Damien’s recurring excuse, his actions always justified by the child’s well-being, yet it seemed to extend his protective embrace around Emma as well.

Emma felt an unexpected sweetness in her heart, glancing at Damien’s expressionless face, still as stoic as an iceberg, wondering if his thoughts were as indifferent as his face suggested.

"Why the pretense?" Emma murmured under her breath.

Hardly had she finished when Damien captured her mouth with his hand, shaping it into a comical pout, his icy gaze fixing on her as he asked in a low tone, "What was that?"

"I said, thank you, Mr. President," Emma mumbled awkwardly with her lips puffed out.

Damien released her mouth and then, extending his right arm in an arc, looked at her sideways as if she was quite the fool.

It took Emma a moment to react, rushing to loop her arm through Damien’s. A smile naturally found its way onto her lips.

Damien tightened his grip on her arm, letting out a pleased hum, a hint of amusement twinkling in his eyes. "Not too dim-witted, after all."
