Chapter 153: Caught in the Act
At this moment, Emma Hart was blissfully unaware that she was the reason Damian Sterling had stormed out of the banquet.
"You’re saying when you went to deliver the meal, you found the room empty?" Damian’s eyes gleamed with a frosty intensity as he quickened his pace toward the room, his assistant struggling to keep up.
To avoid infuriating Damian further, the assistant nearly jogged, replying, "Yes, Mr. Sterling, I asked the guards at the door, and they said that aside from Miss Emma stepping out in the afternoon and being sent back, she hasn’t come out again."
Damian felt like crushing his own hand in frustration. He had known this woman wouldn’t just stay put in her room. To think that even posting two guards at the door was futile!
"Fire those two guards when we get back. They can’t even keep an eye on a single person. Do they only know how to eat and not work?" Damian fumed, and his assistant didn’t dare say anything but to agree.
Trailing behind them was Sophia Greenwood, looking utterly distressed as she struggled to keep up in her high heels.
If she didn’t follow, and Damian’s supposed drugging took effect without her presence, she’d miss out big time.
Lingering far behind the group was a little tail.
After greeting Ava Garcia, Emma Hart followed them, initially puzzled by what could have angered Damian so severely.
Now, seeing the large group heading towards the room she had escaped from, a sense of dread hit her. Could her escape have been discovered?
This realization made her recall the reason for her escape – she had gone to ask Ava Garcia for money.
Sighing to herself, she knew now was not the time to worry about money. The immediate concern was how to mitigate the impending disaster.
Following them to the room, Damian stood expressionless as the guards opened the door to reveal it was empty, his gaze fiery as if about to erupt.
"Is this how you watch over someone?" His icy words pierced the guards deeply.
Despite their toughness, facing Damian’s inherent dominance, they felt suppressed.
The guards remained silent, heads bowed in guilt. The mistake was theirs, and Damian’s anger was justified.
Seeing Damian Sterling so infuriated at his subordinates was a rare sight, and Sophia Greenwood couldn’t hide her displeasure, her heart burning with jealousy.
The thought that Emma Hart had already made such an impact on Damian was alarming. If she allowed their relationship to progress further, her chances would dwindle even more!
Thus, Sophia couldn’t help but step forward, adopting a gentle tone to suggest, "Come on, they didn’t do it on purpose. Let’s just find someone to help."
Damian merely gave her a cold glance, the anger and frost in his eyes sending a shiver down Sophia’s spine.
Emma Hart, watching from a distance as Damian scolded the two bodyguards, felt a pang of sympathy. It wasn’t really their fault. After all, who would have thought she’d escape by climbing down the bathroom pipes?
Regretting her actions, Emma bit her lip, wrestling with her conscience and murmuring so softly, "Should I go out there...?"
Yet, this barely audible murmur seemed to catch Damian’s attention.
He slowly turned his head toward her. As his sharp, eagle-like gaze fixed on her, Emma felt as if the air around her had frozen, and the suffocating pressure made her increasingly uncomfortable.
"Got you," Damian’s eyes darkened as he strode towards Emma.
"Oh my God, I knew I shouldn’t have come. Why do I always do this to myself?" Emma’s legs turned to jelly, and she turned to run.
But her reaction was too slow, and she couldn’t outpace Damian, who caught up with her in just a few steps, grabbing her by the collar and dragging her into the room.
This position was not only uncomfortable for Emma’s neck but also quite humiliating. She struggled under Damian’s grip, unwilling to cooperate.
Damian’s expression turned even more frightening due to Emma’s resistance, and his patience was running thin.
He gritted his teeth and whispered menacingly in her ear, "Want to relive last night’s experience, hmm?"
Last night...
The sensation of being drenched from head to toe with cold water was a memory Emma Hart could vividly recall, sending shivers down her spine at the mere thought.
Her neck retracted slightly as she found herself being pulled into a room by Damien Sterling, under the watchful eyes of everyone present.
"Damien, you..." Sophia Greenwood sensed trouble and immediately attempted to intervene, only to be blocked by Damien’s imposing presence. His narrowed eyes glared at her dangerously.
Without a word being spoken, Sophia was compelled to swallow any remaining objections she had.
Seeing Sophia silenced, Damien turned and shut the door without hesitation, leaving his assistant to finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The assistant then turned to an infuriated Sophia stomping her feet, mimicking Damien’s earlier demeanor, "Miss Greenwood, since Mr. Sterling and Miss Emma have gone to rest, why don’t you return to the banquet? The food tonight is quite delightful."
Sophia, infuriated by the patronizing tone, rolled her eyes and snapped, "Mind your own business!" before storming off in anger.
Inside the room, Emma Hart curled up on the bed, watching the man standing by its side with fear evident on her face. Her heart was pounding uncontrollably.
"What did I say before I left?" Damien’s voice was calm but carried an underlying threat as he stared at Emma, each word ice-cold, his presence exuding an intimidating aura.
Emma shivered, her fearful gaze meeting his, the terror in her eyes indicating she remembered his words.
Damien’s gaze darkened as he took a slow step forward, causing perhaps a fright in Emma, who, like a startled bird, hurriedly scooted back, her lips trembling.
In that moment, Damien appeared overwhelmingly menacing, and Emma feared he might actually strip her and throw her outside.
"What, forgotten what I said?" Damien asked knowingly, his smile cold and sinister, "If you’ve forgotten, I’ll make sure you remember!" He reached out as if to grab her.
Emma clenched her teeth, eyes brimming with tears and red with fright, a whimper escaping her lips.
How unfair, she thought, I helped you escape another woman’s clutches, and yet you treat me so terribly!
Feeling aggrieved, tears began to overflow, and Emma truly started to cry.
