Chapter 105: Better Safe Than Sorry

Chapter 105: Better Safe Than Sorry

Emma Hart playfully responded, "Of course, why not?" as she casually leaned her head on Damien Sterling’s shoulder.

Damien glanced at Emma from the corner of his eye, a smile fleeting across his face. Despite her reluctance, she still managed to bring him a moment of joy.

With a mischievous smile, Emma hadn’t intended to lean on Damien’s shoulder for long.

However, as they turned a corner in the hallway, they encountered a woman of exquisite elegance and demeanor, just coming out of the beauty salon.

Emma recognized that goddess-like aura; it could only belong to Sophia Greenwood.

Caught off guard, Emma stared at Sophia.

Just a second ago, she was second-guessing her playful action, but now, she had completely forgotten her concerns, her head still resting on Damien’s shoulder, creating a tense atmosphere.

It took Emma a moment, slow and foolish, to realize her position and hastily remove her head from Damien’s shoulder.

Sophia, ever the step ahead, masked her initial displeasure with a practiced polite smile, "Damien, darling, what a coincidence?"

Despite wearing a smile, Sophia Greenwood couldn’t hide the disappointment on her face.

Damien Sterling’s presence was a surprise to her.

What kind of man was Damien? How could he find the time to accompany a woman to such a place?

Seeing Damien Sterling not responding to her, Sophia chose not to embarrass herself further and turned her attention to Emma Hart.

She stretched out her freshly manicured nails, touching Emma’s face with her cold fingertips, tracing a path down her cheek.

Emma Hart stepped back from the sudden cold touch.

This action immediately alarmed Damien Sterling, who quickly turned to support Emma, "What’s wrong?"

Sophia retracted her hand, having intended only to mock Emma’s skin. She hadn’t anticipated Emma’s reaction.

What was she implying? Was she trying to frame her? Her fingers hadn’t even touched her.

What infuriated Sophia the most was the genuine concern Damien Sterling had shown. It wasn’t a feigned reaction but a direct and heartfelt response.

In Sophia’s memory, Damien had never shown such care towards any woman.

His deep eyes, always as sharp as obsidian, had reflected the acumen of a shrewd businessman, seemingly indifferent to anyone or anything in the world, especially towards women...

Yet now, Damien’s behavior made Sophia feel he was acting out of character.

Sophia Greenwood looked at Emma Hart with a smile, feigning concern, "Emma, what’s wrong?"

Emma, realizing her own awkwardness, waved it off, "Nothing, I just lost my footing for a moment."

"Do you need something?" Damien Sterling asked coolly.

Sophia was momentarily taken aback, unsure if Damien was blaming her. Surely, he wouldn’t overreact over such a woman?

Pausing briefly, wondering if Damien needed her for something, Sophia replied, "No, nothing."

"If it’s nothing, then please make way. This corridor is quite narrow."

Sophia’s face turned ashen at Damien’s words. She stepped aside, allowing them to pass, watching as they disappeared down the corridor.

Her beautiful eyes filled with endless jealousy and resentment, her fists clenched, repeatedly whispering "Emma Hart" under her breath.

Emma followed Damien to the curb, where traffic was congested, all due to a car parked on the already narrow road.

That car... it looked familiar.

It wasn’t until Damien headed towards it that Emma remembered - it was one of the limited edition supercars from Damien’s collection.

As they approached the car, Emma realized the culprit was indeed Damien, "Can’t you follow traffic rules for once?" she said in exasperation.

Damien, appearing indifferent, pulled out sunglasses from his suit pocket and headed to the front of the car, shouting to Emma at the roadside, "Are you getting in, or do you plan to walk?"

His tone was displeased.

Emma felt helpless, knowing further discussion could start a conflict, "I’m not walking! I could get killed!" she said, half-joking, hurrying into the car.

Everyone saw her following Damien; she couldn’t guarantee no one wanted to harm her.

Damien glanced at Emma, not admitting that his eagerness to see her had led him to carelessly leave his car in the street.

Besides, mundane tasks like finding parking were never his concern.

The accelerator was pressed down hard, sending the distinctive roar of a luxury car echoing through the streets as Damien Sterling flamboyantly opened the convertible top.

Emma Hart watched the top slowly retract, realizing that with it open, onlookers would have a clear view of them.

She pondered how those she knew in the city would react to such a spectacle.

Her hair whipped about her face in the wind, "Hurry up and close it."

"Close it? And not get my money’s worth?" Damien’s response was grounded in truth; not every car offers the luxury of an open-top experience at will.

But Emma really couldn’t stand Damien’s ostentation!

"I’m cold!" she protested, though the weather hardly justified her claim.

Earlier, Emma’s pleas to close the top had been ignored, but now, claiming to be cold, Damien gave her a few scrutinizing looks before reaching for the button.

The roof began to close, inch by inch.

Perhaps the best way to care for someone is to heed the old adage: better safe than sorry.

Real or not, what if she really was cold?

"You better be really cold!" Damien couldn’t help but glare at Emma sternly.

Emma felt a shiver not from the cold but from Damien’s intense gaze.

Even if she wasn’t cold before, she certainly felt it now.

She grabbed a coat from beside her and draped it over her shoulders, "I’m cold!"

"Emma Hart, you really can be a handful," Damien remarked with a tone of annoyance.

"Then maybe you shouldn’t bother with this ’handful’!" Emma’s retort wasn’t out of spite; it seemed like a sensible solution for both of them.

"Emma Hart, it seems you’ve forgotten what I’ve told you," Damien noted.

"Yeah, I forgot," she lied, turning her head away.

How could she truly forget? Damien’s words, "Emma Hart, I’ve got you for life," were not something to be easily forgotten.

She hadn’t forgotten at all.
