Chapter 104: Walking Arm in Arm
Emma Hart opened her eyes again, this time her gaze widened in shock without closing them again, taking a real look at the man before her.
"Damien Sterling!" she nearly shrieked. How could it be him?
Emma’s face mirrored sheer disbelief, while Damien Sterling remained unnervingly calm, even daring to stroke her smooth, delicate cheek with a mischievously ambiguous expression, "It really is quite smooth."
Emma’s face turned a deep shade of red instantly. Glancing around, she realized they were alone in the room.
Damien’s sinister gaze made her increasingly uncomfortable—a clear sign of danger.
"How... how are you here?" she stammered.
"And why can’t I be here?" Damien’s deep eyes twinkled with intrigue as he posed the question back to her.
This man was becoming more perverse by the moment, Emma remembered distinctly that men were not allowed in this place.
"How did you get in?" Suddenly, Emma recalled the incident at the restaurant, the seemingly random acquisition of an establishment.
Looking at Damien’s face, she figured repeating such an act wouldn’t be out of character for him.
"I haven’t acquired it yet, but if you want, I might consider it," Damien said casually.
Wait, Emma thought she had only said that in her mind. Was Damien using some sort of mind-reading technique again?
"Your eyes gave you away," Damien added.
Emma quickly lowered her head, worried he might read her expression again and find out she was cursing him internally.
With his apparent abilities, she decided it might be best to keep her mouth shut from now on, to save the trouble.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, still keeping her head down.
Wasn’t he the one who had hastily sent her away? He seemed to be busy every day; her treatment had only lasted an hour.
"I..." Damien Sterling paused, seemingly caught off-guard, as if about to reveal something impulsively but then holding back.
He didn’t want to tell Emma he had canceled an important meeting to be here.
For some reason, he didn’t want to admit that sitting in the boardroom, listening to reports, his mind was infuriatingly filled with thoughts of her.
Damien Sterling despised the feeling of his thoughts being out of control!
His mind had never been swayed by anyone, yet Emma Hart possessed a formidable force, constantly and forcefully penetrating his thoughts.
"Just passing by..."
"Passing by? Then why bother to drop me off and then return? Coming straight here would have sufficed." Emma Hart spoke casually, inadvertently revealing Damien Sterling’s true intentions.
Damien Sterling turned to fix Emma Hart with his supposedly harmless gaze, glaring sharply at her, "Emma Hart, you’re starting to meddle too much!"
Emma Hart avoided Damien Sterling’s piercing look, often unable to distinguish whether he was genuinely angry or pretending. Either way, it was best to steer clear of provoking him.
"I was merely stating a fact," Emma Hart murmured, her voice so low that only she could hear.
Damien Sterling’s ears, sharp as ever, picked up on her whisper, "Emma Hart!" It sounded like a final warning from him.
Internally rolling her eyes at Damien Sterling, Emma Hart couldn’t help but remark, "Impressive hearing you’ve got there."
"Emm..." Damien Sterling began, his voice deep and grave.
Before he could finish, Emma Hart tactfully shifted to the side, avoiding both his gaze and the anger seemingly emanating from his very pores.
The room fell silent, its soft pink hues imparting a sweet, feminine ambiance.
In such a setting, Damien Sterling’s presence as a man seemed rather out of place.
"Mr. Sterling, do you plan to stay here? Perhaps you’d prefer to relax in the next room with some tea, snacks, or even enjoy the company of beautiful women?"
"I’m here to see you!" he replied, his tone domineering yet assertive, unwaveringly firm and determined.
Emma Hart felt a sense of resignation. When had Damien Sterling become so shameless?
Calling in the beautician, Emma Hart noticed her giving Damien Sterling yet another look, unable to stop marveling at his perfection.
"Miss Emma, shall we continue?" the beautician whispered, her voice soft, attempting to convey gentleness.
However, Damien Sterling’s focus remained solely on Emma Hart, undistracted by any other woman.
Emma Hart nodded, "Thank you."
As the beautician slowed her pace, Emma Hart, mindful of Damien Sterling’s presence, asked sheepishly, "Could we perhaps speed this up a bit?"
"Of course, Miss Emma."
In the half-hour that followed, Damien Sterling busied himself with his emails, possibly acquiring a few companies on a whim.
Once Emma Hart was ready, she hurriedly prepared to leave with Damien Sterling.
Damien Sterling stood at the room’s entrance, waiting for Emma Hart to finish changing.
As she emerged, he scrutinized her, nodding in satisfaction, "The money seems well spent."
Today, Damien Sterling was inexplicably in a good mood.
Dressed sharply in a suit at the door, he suddenly offered his arm, almost causing Emma Hart, who was following close behind, to bump into him.
What was he stopping for so suddenly?
Emma Hart looked up along Damien’s tall frame, noticing his bent arm, an apparent invitation for her to link arms with him.
Turning to face her, Damien had to slightly lower his head to meet Emma’s gaze due to their height difference.
He looked at her intently, urging, "What are you waiting for?"
Indeed, he wanted her to link arms, but why the need for such formality here? Emma Hart was puzzled.
However, Damien Sterling showed no signs of retracting his offer, instead casting another glance her way.
Under Damien’s compelling gaze, Emma Hart reluctantly scanned her surroundings and, like a thief, cautiously threaded her arm through his.
No sooner had Emma’s arm passed through than Damien gripped it tightly, making escape impossible.
"Emma Hart, I’ve got you for life!" Damien declared.
Emma Hart looked up at Damien’s triumphant expression, bewildered by his strange proclamation.
What did he mean by having her for life? What was this all about?
"Mr. Sterling, where did I go wrong? Can’t I change?" Emma Hart was on the verge of saying, "Mr. Sterling, why must you be so sure about me? Can’t I change?"
If other women knew that the president of Sterling Group had said such things to Emma Hart, and she was filled with reluctance and helplessness, Emma would soon be the target of their envy.
Emma Hart awkwardly kept her arm in Damien’s, which only displeased him further, "Emma Hart, could you be any less stiff? You’re a woman, can’t you be a little more delicate?"
Stiff? Was he actually complaining about her now? Allowing Damien Sterling to hold her arm was already granting him a huge favor.
Of course, such thoughts Emma dared only keep to herself.
