Chapter 98: Chapter 94: Unknown Conspiracy

The party was over, and Luo’er finally got a chance to rest. Without even taking off his servant’s uniform, he hurried to Tangmo’s door.

The door was still locked, and Luo’er knocked. Tangmo’s irritable voice came from inside, "I want to sleep, don’t bother me!"

"What’s with this girl tonight?" Luo’er was puzzled for a moment.

But clearly, Tangmo had a bark worse than her bite. Before a minute could pass, she leisurely opened the door. Luo’er saw her red-rimmed eyes; she had clearly just been crying.

"What the hell happened to you today?" Entering the room, Luo’er closed the door behind him and asked.

"Humph!" Tangmo harrumphed angrily and turned her head away without speaking.

Luo’er temporarily put aside the conspiracy he just discovered, and summarised what happened today. He finally gleaned some insights.

"Jealous again?" Luo’er asked tentatively.

"Humph, who would be jealous of you!" Tangmo retorted with her head held high and little conviction in her voice. It was clear to Luo’er that he had guessed right.

"Just because I talked to Feliz?" Luo’er said in disbelief.

"You even remembered her name!" Tangmo glared at him, puffing in anger.

"What is there to be jealous about? I just met her by chance!" Luo’er spread his hands, looking helpless.

"You don’t know," Tangmo pouted, her voice gradually softened, "This girl is always picking on me. She knows I’m a new noble and wants to compete with me in everything. And it’s all because my talent was higher than hers during the entrance ceremony."

"And then?" Luo’er asked, "So why are you mad at me?"

"Because you’re a blockhead!" Tangmo yelled, then softened her voice, "I’m afraid Feliz will steal you away."

"You’re taking this too seriously." Luo’er didn’t know what to say.

"What were you thinking when I was dancing with that boy today?" Tangmo gazed at him, asking in a low voice.

"Er..." Luo’er blinked. He wanted to lie, but felt guilty about it. So he decided to tell the truth, "I’m sorry, I was thinking about other things."

"You!" Tangmo was so angry she almost shed tears.

"Okay, okay, I admit I didn’t notice you today. But I’m still here by your side now," Luo’er held her hand gently, trying to comfort her.

Tangmo fell into his arms, and clinging to him she grumbled, "Actually, I really wanted to dance with you today."

"There will always be other opportunities," Luo’er said with a smile.

Luo’er sighed gently. He had wanted to tell Tangmo about the conspiracy he had discovered, but it seemed he wouldn’t get a chance now. He was baffled by the way this girl’s mind worked, constantly mired in the woes of adolescent love.

Having comforted Tangmo, Luo’er slowly headed to his dormitory. As he walked into a secluded corner, he suddenly heard a noise from behind. Instinctively, he reached under his arm, but found he didn’t bring his gun.

"In such a hurry are we," A familiar voice emanated from the darkness, putting him at ease instantly.

"You certainly get around!" Luo’er turned around and teasingly greeted Cheng Ziang as he emerged from the darkness.

"This kind of place can’t keep the Brotherhood out," Cheng Ziang said with a rare smile.

"Over here!" Luo’er gestured and led Cheng Ziang to a secluded corner that was rarely traversed and hence suitable for their meeting.

"I had the chance to probe the Mage Corps recently. Judging by the size of their base, Holy Heart City’s Mage Corps should have about 5000 members!" Cheng Ziang got straight to the point.

"I checked the archives. The Magic Academy produces over seven hundred mages every five years. With an enlistment rate of eighty percent, the Mage Corps can only replenish over five hundred members every five years." Luo’er chimed in thoughtfully.

"So, does this mean that the Mage Corps of Holy Heart City has been replenished for half a century to reach this scale?" Cheng Ziang asked.

"Hmm," Luo’er nodded, "After the first Otherworld War, many of their mage corps were captured on Earth."

"No wonder their scale is not that big." Cheng Ziang remarked.

"Try to figure out the exact number of the Mage Corps in the coming days. If things go south, we may have to leave the Magic Academy in advance." Luo’er advised.

"What’s wrong?"

"I have noticed recently that some sort of power seems to have set a conspiracy against the Magic Academy. Our appearance has apparently disrupted their plans. If they are not after us, we should withdraw from the Magic Academy before they make their move. Always be wise in defending ourselves!" Luo’er said in a deep voice.

"Conspiracy?"

"Yes, remember the magic tutor you killed?" Luo’er asked.

"Are you going to give me a lecture about it?" Cheng Ziang rolled his eyes.

"No," Luo’er shook his head. "This man was one of the pawns the power had placed in the academy. They probably have to initiate their plan ahead of schedule because of your appearance."

"So, you mean the guy I killed that day was actually a mole?" Cheng Ziang said, realizing, "no wonder he was acting so suspiciously that day."

Suddenly, as if he had thought of something, he asked, "What was he doing in the archive room?"

"There’s a passage leading to the outside in the archive room, and they have been plotting through this secret passage!" Luo’er explained.

"That makes sense," Cheng Ziang nodded.

"In fact, when you killed him, if the academy had made a fuss about it, their plan would have gone south. But obviously, the academy buried it, intending to conduct a secret investigation." Luo’er added.

"Then, to avoid any future mishap, they want to apply their plan as quickly as possible!" Cheng Ziang, being a smart person, instantly put two and two together.

"Correct, I estimate that their plan could be initiated during this period. I don’t know what it is yet, but we need to be fully prepared."

"Speaking of it, I remembered something," Cheng Ziang scratched his head, frowning, "Yue’er recently noticed that the troops in Holy Heart City have been moved around too frequently, which is strange. I told you about it before. But now that I link it with this, I fear it’s an enemy in the imperial court."

"Do you think the person who deployed this plot against the Magic Academy is someone from the palace?" Luo’er asked with a frown.

"Yes, it certainly wouldn’t be the Church Court, they have no reason to oppose their own academy." Cheng Ziang analyzed.

"Anyway, let’s complete our task as quickly as possible to avoid being dragged into this mess," said Luo’er, nodding.

"Yes!" Cheng Ziang nodded, and then the two fell into a brief silence.

"How’s Moumou?" Cheng Ziang abruptly broke the silence.

"Don’t count on her," Luo’er said, rubbing his temples, "All I’m hoping for now is that she can learn some magic."

"If I’d known this was the case, I would have sent Yue’er on this mission," Cheng Ziang sighed.

"No," Luo’er shook his head, "Yue’er has social anxiety, she can only communicate normally with our team. Once put in the academy, her secretive demeanor would draw a lot of attention. Miss Audrey is nothing more than a magic prodigy who was born poor but dares to defy her fate. If Yue’er acts secretive all the time, someone might take her for a heretic, and that’d be a disaster."

"You seem to know both of them quite well!" Cheng Ziang said with a smirk.

"What do you mean!" Luo’er also couldn’t help but chuckle at his gaze.

"If nothing else, I’d better leave first. You guys be extra careful," Cheng Ziang warned.

"Yes, you too, keep yourself safe. The security of the academy has been rather lax recently, I have a sense of foreboding," Luo’er nodded.

"Don’t worry, it’s not easy for them to catch me," Cheng Ziang said, showing a smug smile.

After bidding goodbye to Cheng Ziang, Luo’er felt as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his chest. Every time he thought of Tangmo, he got a headache. He really didn’t expect her to do anything helpful for the mission now. As long as she genuinely studied magic and stopped arguing with Feliz, he would be more than grateful.

Luo’er returned to the dormitory where most people were already asleep. The air was heavy with the smell of sweat and feet, so strong it was almost stifling. He held his nose as he made his way to his bed and lay down.

These past days had been his hardest since the start of the mission. Although all he was doing was acting, he had genuinely lived the life of a slave, devoid of status, freedom, and hope. Burdened daily with strenuous work. If he hadn’t been self-reliant from a young age, he would have already collapsed under the pressure.

Luo’er lay there holding his nose, his mind filled with the scene in the archive room. He had to make time to investigate the archive room again whenever he could. No matter what, he wanted to find out who was targeting the academy and what their plan was exactly.

Even though they were only assigned to the Magic Academy because of the mission, they were now counted as part of the academy. If someone caused trouble within the academy, they would undoubtedly be caught up as well, as the saying goes, ’a city gate catches fire, and fish in the moat suffer’.

Especially Tangmo, although she was carrying out the mission, this girl seemed to have never fully got into character. In any case, Luo’er had to figure out those people’s plans to prevent her from being harmed.

With these thoughts, Luo’er closed his eyes, and succumbing to the fetid air, fell into a deep sleep.
