Chapter 772: Chapter 765: Memories of the Past
The next day, Baiyue and Tangmo went to class as promised. The idea of their studying magic was Mr. Yalunte’s suggestion. Of course, due to their affiliation with the headquarters, the Church Court senior leaders turned a blind eye to it. Both of them cherished such an opportunity and planned to learn more magic at the Academy.
While Haiya Academy on Earth did offer magic courses, most of them were only basic theories of magic, and advanced magic was virtually absent. Therefore, Feliz, who attended Haiya Academy, would often lament the solid foundation of magic among Haiya Academy students while wondering why the academy didn’t offer a slightly advanced level of magic.
While all the students were at class, Luoer left Hu Daoke to take care of Feng and took Cheng Ziang to the door of Shariya’s Dean’s Office. Apart from Cheng Ziang’s issue, Luoer had many questions to ask him.
Knowing that Luoer and his entourage had an acquaintance with Shariya, they met almost no hindrance along the way. On their way to the office, they occasionally saw late students rushing to their classrooms.
Similarly, these students wore gorgeous and intricate uniforms, which appeared quite slim-fitting. Yet they didn’t wear layers of clothing as they would have in the Victorian Era, thanks to the invention of thermal undergarments by Earth-dwellers.
As mentioned before, Holy Heart City, which has a temperate oceanic climate, isn’t tormented by extreme heat in summer, severe cold in winter, and has ample rainfall. Therefore, the traditional attire of Holy Heart City isn’t much different from those of Earth’s oceanic climate regions. However, ever since the introduction of thermal garments to the Otherworld, its inhabitants could finally shed multiple layers of clothing, wear a single coat, and show off their figure.
When they arrived at the door of the office, an assistant informed them that Shariya was currently inside working, so the two looked at each other, and Luoer stepped forward to knock lightly on the door.
"Come in!" Shariya’s voice came from inside. Luoer looked back at Cheng Ziang, motioned for him to enter, and stayed where he was.
"Aren’t you coming in?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"As long as you know what’s going on, I’ll wait for you to tell me personally," Luoer said with a smile, giving a considerate response.
Cheng Ziang looked at Luoer and didn’t force him to enter. He knew that Luoer was a rule-abiding person who had a strong sense of discernment. Although he sometimes appeared to be aloof, at times, his composure could truly bring relief to others.
With gratitude, Cheng Ziang pushed open the door to the office and entered. At the time, Shariya was busy working at his desk, and only looked up after Cheng Ziang gently closed the door.
"Mr. Cheng Ziang, may I know what brings you here?" Shariya asked politely.
"Dean Shariya, I have a few questions that I would like to ask, if you could spare some time," Cheng Ziang replied with equal respect.
"Please ask. If I can assist you, I will do my utmost," Shariya said, gently nodding.
"You’re acquainted with Mr. Yalunte, aren’t you?" Cheng Ziang asked straightforwardly.
"Yalunte..." Shariya uttered, looking at Cheng Ziang with a questioning gaze.
"He is my mentor!" Cheng Ziang answered.
’’Ah,’’ hearing his explanation, Shariya gave a relieved laugh, took a deep breath, and said as he reminisced, ’’Who doesn’t know about Yalunte? At a young age, he made great contributions and became the youngest Corps Commander in Odelanqi’s history...’’
"Can you tell me about his relationship with the Princess?" Cheng Ziang interrupted eagerly.
"Why are you all so concerned about his relationship with the princess?" Shariya asked after pause.
"Um," Cheng Ziang pondered, then said seriously, "I want to know how my master reached where he is today step by step."
"I see," Shariya nodded, no longer questioning. He pondered for a while, then recalled, "It was about twenty years ago. I was merely a senior instructor at the academy then, yet unexpectedly got along well with this young man, Yalunte. After he was promoted to legion leader, he used to visit me occasionally just like you do ..."
As he spoke, he couldn’t help but gaze at Cheng Ziang a few times more, the more he looked, the more puzzled he became as he saw in him, not only the shadow of Yalunte but also that of the long-lost princess.
"Princess Lin was only a student of mine at that time. She was talented with potential for further studies so I patiently taught her magic knowledge. One day, she was discussing a magic-related topic with me in the office, then Yalunte happened to come in, that’s when they first met ..." Shariya said, then raised his head with a sigh, "it’s strange to think about it, they could have easily seen each other in the palace, yet they never did. They met here at the Magic Academy."
"Love is often blind but sweet, like honey. After their first encounter, they met a second time, a third time. I don’t know what they did in the palace, but here at the academy, they laid aside their titles and talked as friends."
"Then why did those things happen later?" Cheng Ziang asked anxiously. He didn’t really want to know about the sweet love between Yalunte and Princess Lin. Compared to their final outcome, such sweet memories were starkly ironic.
"The princess is a member of the royal family, she isn’t allowed to decide her own destiny, and they wouldn’t allow her to love freely," Shariya shook his head regrettably, "on Prince Gudelv’s advice, the old king planned to marry the recently matured princess to the Prince of Masya in order to foster a friendly relationship between the two countries. The seemingly perfect marriage arrangement dealt a thunderous blow to the couple who were truly in love with each other."
"In his youth, Yalunte was impulsive and fearless," sighed Shariya, "yet in such a situation, those traits helped him instead. Had he not chosen to do what he did, I think he would have regretted it for the rest of his life."
He turned towards the stupefied Cheng Ziang and continued, "I believe you might already know what happened next. The story of Yalunte storming into the palace alone and successfully abducting the princess, before disappearing, is heard all around nowadays."
Although such a story might sound implausible, Cheng Ziang had no doubts. He had experienced Yalunte’s swordsmanship, which had truly reached a divine level. Even though it was a bit outdated now, Cheng Ziang was convinced that Yalunte could certainly have accomplished such a feat in that era.
Yalunte and Feng were trained by the same master, who seemed to be an unknown prophet. If Yalunte represented the pinnacle of swordsmanship, then Feng represented the pinnacle of non-traditional magic.
"I want to know what happened after they escaped." Cheng Ziang followed up.
"Not many people saw them after they escaped," Shariya shrugged, "although Otland’s troops did try to stop them, they always managed to escape."
"Has Dean Shariya heard any rumors about them?" Cheng Ziang asked after a moment of silence.
"What rumors?" Shariya asked.
"For instance, when the princess was found, she was already pregnant." Cheng Ziang said, looking into his eyes.
At Cheng Ziang’s words, Shariya first froze, and then smiled, shaking his head, "Young men and women elope, such occurrences should be inevitable. I don’t know what happened, but ..."
As he spoke, Shariya’s expression darkened again. He knew Yalunte had been working for the headquarters these years, and had not been with Princess Lin. A little thought should be enough to guess that something must’ve happened to the princess.
