Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 709 - 702
Chapter 709: 702
The Advance Team was thrown up awkwardly by the shockwave, then slammed heavily in all directions as their heads swam from the impact. Fortunately, Luoer managed to dodge in time, preventing himself from being reduced to a pulp by the attack while also saving the nearby teammates.
Luoer, thrown to the ground, had no time to concern himself with the dizziness. He hurriedly crawled up from the ground, overcoming the vertigo while observing the condition of his team members.
Everyone was groaning while lying nearby. Thankfully, no one had perished in this attack, which to Luoer was already the best outcome.
"The rune has been terminated again..." Tangmo, struggling to get up from the ground, let out a wail the moment he saw the rune on the ground.
The rune stone slabs that were originally joined together with an adhesive had cracked because of the vibration. Even several slabs were directly popped and fell nearby. Because of the destruction of the rune, the entire ceremony ended in failure. On the door frame, the light purple glow once again suppressed the light blue glow, retreating visibly.
"This guy, it never ends." Luoer coughed to alleviate his nausea, gritting his teeth angrily.
"Careful!" Just as Luoer was irked by the unfinished effort, he suddenly heard Fulajie’er’s warnings. He saw the gigantic hand that had been buried in the ground yank out of the mud, and like it had sensed Luoer’s presence, abruptly slapped towards Luoer who stood not far away.
An invisible shield rose up in front of him again, but Fulajie’er’s shield did not have a great effect this time, as the massive hand directly smashed her newly formed shield, lunging at Luoer.
At the nick of time, Luoer heard a sound of sharp blade cutting across from behind. Followed by something whisking past him at high speed, emitting a swishing sound.
The enormous hand that had been striking towards Luoer suddenly tore open a gigantic hole. The hole was more than a meter long and more than ten centimeters deep, with inky blue blood spurting out from the wound instantly.
This blow had clearly inflicted great damage on Naptios. After a hole was opened in its palm, the hand shook violently and immediately withdrew. The tentacles dancing in the sky also retracted along with its hand.
Luoer turned his head, knowing instantly without thinking who deserved the credit for this blow. He saw Feng, glaring angrily at the direction of the Door of Annihilation, her sword held high. In the blink of an eye, her sword energy had saved Luoer’s life.
Luoer didn’t have time to thank her, he called out loud after a brief astonishment, "Everyone retreat, retreat, all retreat!"
Now that the rune had been destroyed, it meant the second task of closing the Door of Annihilation had failed again. And since Naptios had been badly injured by Feng’s attack, it would certainly seek revenge based on normal human logic.
"Fula, tell the transport plane to cover us, everyone else run back with all your might." Luoer urged loudly.
Under his urging, everyone finally reacted and began to run backwards recklessly. Of course, as the Advance Team, they knew the principle of alternating cover and weren’t completely panicked.
"Little Ke, carry Dean Shariya and run back, never mind your gun!" Luoer ordered loudly.
"Yes!" Upon hearing this, Hu Daoke quickly threw his machine gun aside, then carried the panting Shariya and ran off. Although Shariya was a high-level mage, he was old after all and had less physical strength than the young.
"Feng, go!" Luoer turned his head to see Feng standing facing the Door of Annihilation with her sword, so he shouted anxiously.
"I’ll cover the rear." Feng turned back and said calmly.
"No need, let’s go!" Luoer commanded loudly.
"Oh..." This was the first time Feng had seen Luoer so agitated. For Luoer, the safety of the whole team was his constant principle, and he couldn’t tolerate the casualties of any team member.
Luoer’s hunch was confirmed. After a brief pause, countless tentacles gushed out from the barrier, hurtling straight towards the Advance Team’s position. The sheer volume of tentacles presented a daunting task, even for Feng.
The reason Luoer didn’t want Feng to cover their retreat was not that he doubted her ability to fight off the tentacles, but that he feared she might be swept away into the Annihilation World.
After all, magic accounted for more than ninety-nine percent of Feng’s combat power. No one knew whether the Annihilation World had magic power. Without it, Feng would just be a frail ordinary swordsman. Crushing her would be as easy as crushing an ant for Naptios.
This was what was usually called a home-field advantage. Most of the inhabitants of the Otherworld built their combat abilities on their home-field advantage. Once they left the Magic World, they were no different than ordinary people, even inferior to Earthlings who had the benefit of technology.
In the face of the anticipated tentacles, Luoer didn’t hesitate. He aimed his rifle for a rapid burst of gunfire. The enhanced explosive bullets in his gun caused devastating damage preventing the tentacles from getting close. A few bullets could even sever the ends of some tentacles.
But the situation didn’t last. As his ammunition ran out, Luoer lost his ability to suppress the tentacles. Discarding his rifle, he turned to run, and the team behind him opened fire on the tentacles, providing him with covering fire.
Feng, brandishing her sword, ran in front of him, which eased Luoer’s anxiety somewhat. If they had to fight, they should draw Naptios into the Magic World to fully utilize Feng’s home-field advantage.
Apparently, the tentacles were extraordinarily enraged by Luoer’s escape. Like having eyes, they saw Luoer fleeing. Ignoring the fierce fusillade from behind, they surged towards him.
A tentacle shot out, hitting Luoer who was on the run, directly in the ribs. The immense force sent him flying, he then tumbled and groaned in agony on the ground.
Luoer felt intense pain in his left ribs. The tentacle had clearly broken his rib bone. He struggled to his feet, now praying that the broken rib hadn’t punctured his lung.
"Luo’er!!!" Seeing Luoer struck down, Tangmo let out a heart-rending gasp. Dropping his weapon, he ran towards Luoer, heedless of everything else.
"Don’t... come..." Luoer groaned. As he spoke, salty blood spurted from his mouth, causing him to cough involuntarily.
Clearly, Luoer had been careless. He had sent Fulajie’er to ask the transport plane for cover, leaving him defenseless. Fulajie’er had always been his defensive talisman and had saved his life multiple times.
He had barely crawled a step when he felt his left foot tightly wrapped by something. The tentacle held his leg and wrapped around his calf, with immense force, it crushed Luoer’s calf bone in a twist.
Luoer clenched his teeth, bearing the pain without a sound. Cold sweat trickled down his forehead. He ignored the intense pain, rolling over to his back, he unholstered his pistol from his waist and fired several shots at the tentacle holding him.
But his counterattack had no effect. Another tentacle lashed out, hitting his pistol-carrying left hand and knocking the pistol away. His left forearm twisted in an unnatural way, clearly broken by the blow.
The injured Luoer finally gave up resistance. He struggled to turn and look back, meeting Tangmo’s gaze.
Suddenly, an idea struck him. He used his right hand to yank Fula’s pendant from around his neck, then tossed it backward, shouting, "Stay back, don’t avenge me!"
It seemed that he would be dragged into the Annihilation World by Naptios. But under no circumstances should Fulajie’er’s pendant be taken with him. Fulajie’er lodged in it, and she could potentially vanish.
The pendant traced an arc in midair before falling to the ground. The tentacle retracted abruptly, pulling Luoer into the barrier of the Door of Annihilation within a blink.
"Luoer!!!" Tangmo collapsed to his knees, calling out hoarsely.
