Chapter 691: Chapter 684: Challenging Tradition
Luoer heard her mumbling, but he pretended not to hear it, as he didn’t know how to respond.
After a brief farewell, Luoer returned to the training ground with Cheng Ziang and Hu Daoke. The two exchanged glances and couldn’t help but say, "It’s a good thing we didn’t bring Moumou along, or she would definitely be jealous."
"Do you also think there’s ambiguity between us?" Luoer asked without turning his head.
Hearing Luoer’s words, the two exchanged glances again, showing expressions of indifference, and said, "We will refrain from commenting on this. You know yourself."
"All things considered, Melia could be considered one of our few friends in the Otherworld," Luoer said.
"Have you forgotten about the girls you brought back to the base and Earth?" Cheng Ziang reminded him.
"Well, you see," Luoer turned his head to look at him and then said, "I owe those girls gratitude for their understanding. It’s not an equal relationship. Although they are friends too, I never feel as comfortable with them as I do with Melia."
"What does that mean?" Hu Daoke asked Cheng Ziang.
"It means," Cheng Ziang grinned playfully, waving his hand and leaning in to whisper, "Luoer is saying that only Melia can be the ’main wife’, and everyone else can only be ’concubines’."
"What do you mean by ’main’ and ’concubines’?" Hu Daoke asked in a hushed voice.
"Wives and concubines!" Cheng Ziang explained.
"Can you two stop teasing me all the time?" Seeing the two whispering to each other, Luoer said helplessly.
Upon their return to the transport plane, Tangmo unusually didn’t press Luoer about what he and Melia had discussed and instead was engrossed in observing Feng’s condition.
According to Baiyue’s research on the pamphlet, Feng’s Dantian, where she stored her magical energy, could gradually expand with continuous training. In other words, if Feng practiced as described in the booklet, her body’s capacity for storing magic would continue to increase.
Not only that, but the pathways for circulating magical energy could also expand and strengthen with cultivation, enabling her to cast more magic more quickly.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t decipher the text recorded in the booklet, so they could only study the illustrations and proceed by trial and error.
Feng’s combat abilities were already impressive. From what the booklet showed, she was at a moderate level with potential for further improvement. Just imagining how powerful she would be when reaching a higher-ranking level was frightening.
Combining the pointers in the pamphlet with his own experience, Tangmo formed an idea.
Feng’s current state was almost identical to that of a cultivator in internet novels, except cultivators in the novels condensed spiritual energy, while Feng condensed magic power.
If they went in this direction, Feng’s cultivation might also be divided into levels determined by the amount of magic her Dantian could store. Each expansion of the Dantian represented a breakthrough in her realm.
As for how to reach the breakthrough point, Tangmo believed that excessive replenishment of magic power would be the key. By continuing to supplement rich magic power, Feng’s Dantian would be in an overflowing state, forcing the Dantian to expand and accommodate more magic power. After reaching a critical point, the Dantian would no longer expand easily. At this point, there is a need for stronger magic power to break through the shackles directly, elevating Feng’s cultivation status to a new level.
As for how to enhance the intensity and width of the meridians, Tangmo thought it might be due to the over-injection or releasing of magic power. However, this would lead to damage to Feng’s meridians due to the overabundance of magic power flowing through.
But during his inspection of Feng, Tangmo was surprised to find that her meridians were already in a state of moderate damage due to the recent battle. What astounded him was when he checked again on the airship, he found that Feng’s meridian damage had somewhat healed. This meant that during this period, the magic power inside Feng’s body automatically repaired the meridians that were damaged due to the squeeze.
Tangmo even courageously speculated if Feng’s body meridians would continue to function even with damage and would not result in magic power erosion.
If this hypothesis is confirmed, it would completely break the curse of mages. The scholarly papers that Zhuyan Yu and Nightingale painstakingly wrote might also need to undergo significant revision.
In the Otherworld, mages are a very fragile group. Not only meridian injuries but even simple external injuries could render them unable to use magic power. Their body meridians are like precise instruments and any injury would significantly affect their magic flow, and could even lead to severe magic power erosion.
Luoer was a typical victim of magic power erosion, and his father had also died from this disease. It could be said that two generations of Luoer’s family had experienced the torment of magic power erosion.
But why is it the case for Feng? Why does she not have to worry about magic power erosion at all?
After reading the draft paper written by Zhuyan Yu, Tangmo seemed to have found some clues which were about the distribution of meridians.
Typical mages had meridians that circulated magic power spread all over their bodies, like capillaries branching out everywhere. This is determined by the way mages operate their magic power.
During the incantation of spells to drive magic, the mage needs to continuously absorb surrounding magic power and converge it to the main meridians, then transform it into appropriate magic to cast. This requires that a mage’s body meridians be distributed as extensively as possible to quickly complete the gathering of magic power.
In Zhuyan Yu’s paper, Tangmo discovered that Feng’s meridian situation was different from that of standard mages. She only had a dozen main meridians in her body. These meridians were connected to various parts of the body through the Dantian, without the capillary-like distribution found in usual mages. This led to certain parts of her body not conducting magic power, hence injuries in those areas wouldn’t really matter.
Ordinary humans on Earth do not have meridians that can conduct magic power. Once they enter the Otherworld, where magic power is ubiquitous, it still tries to penetrate through their bodies, like atmospheric pressure.
However, since there are no meridians for magic power to flow through, magic power seeps slowly into the bodies of humans from Earth. Once it breaks through the body surface and reaches the internal organs, this can lead to severe magic power erosion. More importantly, this condition is almost irreversible. Luoer’s father, Luo Chuan, for instance, died from organ failure due to this erosion.
Feng’s body structure is right between people from Earth and the Otherworld – unlike humans from Earth, her body is not completely devoid of meridians, and unlike people from the Otherworld, her meridians are not distributed like capillaries throughout her body.
She only has a dozen or so major meridians in her body which ensures the normal flow of magic power in her body. Thus, unlike mages, she does not have to worry constantly about magic power erosion.
After studying the pamphlet, Baiyue found something interesting. The pamphlet seems to be encouraging cultivators to run excessive magic power and burst the meridians, as the meridians – once repaired from the damage – would become stronger.
This theory dramatically contradicts the established norm in the Otherworld’s magic community that prohibits the use of magic after injury.
Regardless, the cultivation method recorded in this pamphlet isn’t suitable for ordinary humans; it seems to be effective only for Feng. If an average mage forcibly practiced the cultivation method in this pamphlet, they could likely end up suffering severe magic power erosion, and it could even threaten their life.
It looks like Feng is indeed an exception, standing outside the existing system, having greatly impacted the Earth’s research. Understanding the secrets within her body would undoubtedly facilitate further research into the magic of the Otherworld.
