Chapter 624: Chapter 617: The Person Who Can’t be Infected
Luoer was anxious, and he didn’t care about anything else. He quickly ran towards the girl. However, before he got to her, she stretched out her hand to stop him: "No, don’t come over, you’ll...cough...you’ll become sick..."
The girl spoke while struggling with a fierce cough. It was uncontrollable coughing that made speaking laborious. She stuck her sword into the ground, then waved her hand in front of her, her face pale.
"You need to move away from there immediately, I will have someone carry you out soon. You might have a chance." Luoer hurriedly told her.
According to their hypothesis, the virus would be carried through the air in the form of spores. The girl had just killed so many Corpse Demons that the spores would have dispersed nearby. Without his gas mask for filtration, Luoer guessed that he too would have been infected.
"There’s no need, I’ll be fine..." The girl replied weakly, managing to control her coughing for a while.
She forcefully blew her nose, expelling the spores that had collected in her nostrils. Then, she pulled out the sword embedded in the ground and walked leisurely towards Luoer, all the while covering her mouth and nose.
"Wait a moment, you..." Seeing her approaching, Luoer felt a tinge of panic. After a moment’s hesitation, he stepped back slightly and raised his hand to stop her, "Stay where you are, don’t move!"
The girl completely ignored Luoer’s command. She glanced at Luoer, lowered her head and continued walking, mumbling, "This stuff is very irritable. I don’t want to keep coughing."
"The problem now is much more serious than coughing." Luoer watched her tensefully.
"I told you, I won’t get sick. How many times do I have to repeat it?" The girl, seemingly displeased with Luoer’s attitude, could not help but frown, her face showing signs of disgust.
"You, won’t, get, sick?" Luoer stared at her incredulously. Did she mean she was immune to the virus?
The girl ignored him and simply sheathed her sword. Then, she began to pat her clothes, shaking off the spores attached to her.
Not coughing any longer, the girl’s complexion improved rapidly, appearing as if nothing had happened at all. She looked composed and unruffled, certainly not like someone infected with a virus.
Luoer blankly watched her every move. Taking advantage of Luoer’s distraction, the other members of the Advance Team caught up to them and stood beside him.
"Don’t come near me, beware of getting infected." The girl casually remarked when she saw the group approaching, continuing to pat off the spores on her clothes.
"Luoer, this is a living case-study!" Cheng Ziang came up to Luoer and spoke to him in Chinese.
"What do you mean?" Luoer looked a bit stunned and turned towards Cheng Ziang.
"Let’s take her back, study her. We might be able to find out why she isn’t infected. This could be the key to combating this epidemic- much quicker than studying the virus itself," Cheng Ziang said.
"But..." Luoer began, looking somewhat hesitant.
"I know what you’re thinking, let’s put the moral question of taking her away for study aside. Even if we really wanted to, I highly doubt we could defeat her." Cheng Ziang shook his head.
The strength of the girl left a deep impression on the members of the Advance Team. It was as if she was showcasing her strength, showing her powerful abilities over and over again. As a result, the team members had conceded defeat without any will to fight the girl.
Cheng Ziang was well aware that if they couldn’t decipher the principles of the girl’s techniques, they would have no idea what to think of her. Who knows how she executes her moves, or whether she could split a thousand mountains with a single stroke of her sword if they clashed head-on.
Seemingly hearing their conversation, the girl glanced back at them. However, Cheng Ziang wasn’t worried she could understand what they were saying.
After briefly cleaning up the virus on her body, the girl resumed leading the way without looking back, saying to them, "Follow me, I will take you to the Master."
"The Master is..." As Luoer was about to ask, he saw the girl’s receding figure and wisely held his tongue. Despite asking several times before, he obviously wasn’t getting more information from the girl, who seemed to know how to say everything and yet also seemed to understand nothing at all.
Looking slightly worried, he turned to Cheng Ziang, who hesitated for a moment before seriously saying, "I feel it’s necessary for us to meet this so-called Master. Don’t you think it’s curious? A person living deep within the infection zone, who knew we were coming. I’m really curious what his actual identity is."
"I’m worried that this might be a trap," Luoer said anxily.
"If she had any animosity towards us, I don’t think we could win against her. You’ve seen her techniques, I reckon that within a fifty-meter range, all of us together are no match for her. If she wanted to attack us, we would have no chance of victory," Cheng Ziang said, shaking his head.
Admitting this demonstrated his respect for the girl. From initially picking up his long knife to finally setting aside cold weapons for firearms, Cheng Ziang had gone through a torturous process of internal struggle. If he possessed the girl’s combat skills, he would certainly not give up his favored cold weapons.
"Anyway, we’ll know once we plunge into the dragon’s den," Cheng Ziang paused and looked at Luoer, "You send a message to the Airship Command Center, informing them of our current location and action plan. This way, if something happens to us, they can respond in time and send someone to rescue us."
"Yes, I understand," Luoer nodded in agreement.
They left the village along the village road, retracing the path they came from. The girl voluntarily led the way, walking steadily, but not hurriedly.
She moved lightly, each step stable, showing no sign of infection. Luoer had almost forgotten the violent coughing fit the girl had just had due to inhaling the virus.
Although the girl’s movements were relaxed, her expression was tense, constantly aware of her surroundings. If Luoer’s supposition was correct, then the girl’s sensory range extended at least a fifty-meter radius; otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to resonate with Fulajie’er.
For now, Luoer couldn’t determine who was experiencing the issue. Whether it was the girl’s soul perception that was overly powerful or something wrong with Fulajie’er’s appearance.
However, Luoer was obviously leaning more towards the first conclusion. Although Fulajie’er seemed immature and unable to grow up, he knew that she had lived for over twenty years as a Ghost, and her experiences were no less profound than his. Perhaps her subconscious treated herself as a child because her body hadn’t grown in decades.
The girl led the Advance Team on their way and soon left the cobblestone road to enter the forest. Luoer noticed that the terrain seemed to be getting steeper, indicating that they were apparently climbing a hill.
Although this area was considered plains, it was not devoid of hills and even mountains where the average altitude reached over five hundred meters. This might be negligible in a mountainous territory but already counted as a high-peak on the plains.
The girl led the group along a very rugged path that was extremely narrow and desolate, seemingly rarely traversed by people. Luoer noticed traces of branches and shrubs along the route that appeared to have been cut open, presumably by the girl clearing the way.
After struggling uphill along the trail, they finally reached the ridge of a mountain. From there, they had an unobstructed view of the surrounding plains. While it would be an excellent observation point during war times, it likely wouldn’t be a preferred habitation normally.
Upon reaching the ridge, there was a significant reduction in bushes and trees, likely due to man-made deforestation. At the end of the ridge stood a desolate stone lookout tower which was around ten meters tall, looking quite ancient, as indicated by the vines growing over it.
