Chapter 569: Chapter 562: The Unexpected Guest _1
"Why have you all called us back in such a hurry? Is it just because of Teacher Zhu?" Luo’er asked.
"In a way, yes. But there’s an even more important reason," Li Si paused, then continued, "Actually, the delegation from Ilanadale is about to visit the garrison, seeking to establish a firm cooperative relationship. The main representative of the delegation is your mother, Princess Nina from Ilanadale."
"Ah, is mom coming!" Upon hearing this news, Tangmo was the first to be excited, and he even gave an exclamation.
"Mom?" Upon hearing this, Zhuyan Yu couldn’t help but frown.
"Adopted," Cheng Ziang smiled, then softly explained.
"I see!" Zhuyan Yu blinked, revealing a knowing smile.
"So you still plan to use me?" Luo’er asked.
"What are you saying, after all, our family and Ilanadale are related by marriage, thanks to you." Li Si said.
"Never mind," Luo’er waved his hand, then asked, "When are they arriving?"
"If they speed up, the airboat should arrive tomorrow," Li Si replied.
"What about the Murong?" Shangguan Jiu couldn’t help but ask.
"They have to stay in Ilanadale for a period of time, so you might be inconvenienced by having to stay at the garrison," Li Si said.
"I don’t want to stay, I want to go on an adventure with Luo’er!" Shangguan Jiu decisively answered.
"In this state, Murong would definitely be mad if he found out," Li Sighed shaking his head.
"Brother Li, what is the Church Court up to? Why are they all blocked at the Otherworld Gate?" Hu Daoke asked.
"Oh, we asked the Church Court to assist us with security, because we have VIPs coming from Earth to the garrison." Li Si answered.
"What are those mercenaries in hazmat suits at the gate doing? At first glance, I thought they were from Black Watch," Hu Daoke continued.
"I’m not exactly sure, but it seems like the Church Court has run into some problems, so the boss had them put on the hazmat suits," Li Si said hesitantly.
"Is it a biological weapon?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"Where could a biological weapon come from in the Otherworld?" Li Si shrugged.
"That’s good then." Cheng Ziang said, visibly relieved.
"Who is this VIP?" Shangguan Jiu asked.
"Who else could it be but the Chief, Lin Wei?" Li Si said.
He paused, a look of embarrassment crossed his face. Then he stuttered to Luo’er, "Th-That, Luo’er, I need to tell you something, please don’t be upset."
"What is it?" Luo’er stared at him, puzzled.
"Um, well, your grandpa is also coming ..." Li Si said hesitantly.
Upon hearing this, Luo’er’s face instantly fell. He became gloomy and asked coldly, "Who allowed him to come? Who approved of him coming?"
"Ah, well, listen to me..." Li Si did not expect Luo’er’s reaction to Luo Qishan to be so intense and was momentarily flustered.
"Damn it, Wang Xu!" Luo’er stated, thrusting his rifle into Li Si’s arms, then strode hastily towards the office.
Watching his hurried departure, Cheng Ziang couldn’t help sighing and remarked, "I knew it would come to this."
Luo’er rushed into Wang Xu’s office with steam practically coming out of his ears. Despite their months apart, the duo didn’t feel the least bit awkward around each other. Wang Xu was patiently standing by the window, as if he had long anticipated Luo’er’s arrival.
"Who let him come here?" asked Luo’er furiously.
"Don’t get so worked up. The Chief chose to come himself," Wang Xu replied, remaining impressively calm despite Luo’er’s emotional state.
"So you just let him come because he willed it? You wouldn’t even stop him if he craved death?" Luo’er bit at Wang Xu angrily.
"Luo’er, if the Chief heard you say that, he would be quite hurt," Wang Xu said calmly.
"Why would an old man like him run off to the Otherworld like this!" Luo’er was so furious he was on the verge of tears.
"The Chief heard that he has a new granddaughter and wanted to see her. Your mother is also coming here, so you all can reunite," Wang Xu explained.
"I knew it. I knew I shouldn’t have let him know about this." Luo’er sighed heavily. He felt stuck, his pent-up emotions not finding an outlet, causing him to pace back and forth restlessly.
"You certainly have an unusual way of showing your concern for the Chief. When will the two of you ever have a decent conversation?" Wang Xu sighed before speaking.
"Why would I want to have a proper conversation with him? He never thinks about himself, and always insists on doing things his way," Luo’er retorted, his frustration evident.
"I was planning on sending Luoya to Earth, but he insisted on coming here himself. What if something happens to him because of his frailty..." As Luo’er became increasingly emotional, tears swelled in his eyes and his voice began to waver.
Seeing this, Wang Xu approached him, lightly pat Luo’er’s shoulder, and comforted, "Relax, there’s nothing to worry about. The Chief is rather robust. A round trip won’t hurt him. Don’t get upset."
"Let me ask you this," Luo’er stared at Wang Xu with bloodshot eyes, accusingly weeping, "Are you planning on using him like you used me?"
"Absolutely not, I guarantee it. The Chief came here voluntarily," Li Si raised his hand, stating seriously.
Hearing these words, Luo’er looked away but continued to sob periodically. Wang Xu quietly watched Luo’er, stroking his hair with a hand, struck by a multitude of deep emotions that welled up within him.
He had watched Luo’er grow from a small half-elf boy into the man standing before him. Even though Luo’er had matured a lot, his inner self remained largely the same, displaying the same stubborn pride and still caring deeply about his family.
Over time, Wang Xu had developed a sort of hybrid father-and-brother feeling towards Luo’er. Although Wang Xu had never married, he had raised Luo’er. Seeing Luo’er’s growth gave Wang Xu a strange sense of accomplishment, perhaps akin to what a father would feel.
Upon contemplation, Wang Xu realized he might not fully understand Luo’er. Despite Luo’er’s standoffishness and strained relationship with Luo Qishan, he still deeply cared for his sole relative.
How could someone cordial to all others turn a blind eye to his own family? Even though Luo’er was constantly at odds with Luo Qishan and constantly critiqued him, deep down, he still cared deeply for Luo Qishan. After all, before finding his mother, Luo Qishan was his only support.
"In fact, the Chief mostly wanted to visit you..." After a pause, Wang Xu finally blurted it out.
The mere utterance of these words brought Luo’er’s emotional defenses crashing down. With his head hung low, he let out a soft whimper, tears dripping from his face onto the wooden floor. Seeing Luo’er’s state, Wang Xu didn’t offer comforting words - instead, he walked to the door and quietly bolted it to prevent interruptions.
Luo’er found himself recalling the impassioned pleas from Luo Qishan before he left Earth. Back then, his ambitions wouldn’t allow him to remain, consequently he left Earth and Luo Qishan to find his mother. Now thinking back to that time, Luo’er was overwhelmed with regret.
Now that he had found his mother, every time Luo’er remembered the day’s events, he felt a sharp, heart-wrenching pain. If he could go back, he’d even forfeit the chance to go to Otherworld and instead, stay on Earth with Luo Qishan, until his last breath.
But then, how did he think back then? Why was he so cruel in refusing Luo Qishan’s fervent pleas? Luo Qishan did so much, only to have Luo’er remain by his side.
The longer he stayed in the Otherworld, the deeper Luo’er regretted leaving Luo Qishan. As a half-elf, Luo’er had a longer lifespan, while Luo Qishan was only an aging man who desired companionship. A lonely old man, an elder who had lost many loved ones— left alone by his only kin when he needed company the most. How much more ruthless could he have been?
