Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 522 - 515: Strike Again
Chapter 522: Chapter 515: Strike Again
Ever since she was given permission to leave, Nightingale started packing up, assigning Tangmo and Baiyue to stay behind and conduct research. Magic Messenger Rune on Luo’er’s hand was initially connected with Nightingale, but because she was also about to embark with the Advance Team, she had to replace the connected object.
This time, despite being quite confident, Tangmo didn’t have the opportunity to connect to Luo’er as a messenger. In contrast, it was the quiet Baiyue who got the chance. Perhaps Nightingale felt that Tangmo’s personality was too lively, worried that she would trouble Luo’er without reason, hence didn’t dare to assign her as a liaison officer.
Tangmo, not being able to connect with Luo’er, sulked for a time, even pouting while conducting her research. On the other hand, Baiyue would occasionally look at the rune on the back of her hand and smile knowingly. For those in the know, it was apparent that she had established a messenger connection with Luo’er; for those who didn’t, they assumed they had exchanged wedding rings.
The painting of the transport planes took a few days to complete. During this period, everyone was busy with their own work. Shangguan Jiu, who was responsible for training Luoya, was particularly invested. Likely to win over her future sister-in-law, she spent the following days patiently teaching Luoya.
The guns they used for training were from the Advance Team’s reserve weaponry. However, Shangguan Jiu fitted silencers to the barrels to prevent disturbing those nearby. Undeniably, only the frontline headquarters could afford to use disposable items like silencers for training.
Li Si had no objections, just advised that they prioritize safety. The entire frontline headquarters and the general headquarters tended to accomodate Luo’er’s team: whatever they asked for, they got. As the only reconnaissance team operating in Otherworld, the Advance Team is akin to a family’s only son, lavished with attention.
Thanks to the High-peak people’s overtime work, they finally painted the transport planes’ underbellies sky-blue for camouflage. Originally, the aft part of the transport plane’s cabin had a transparent turret made of tempered glass. However, as Ronisca didn’t plan to engage in combat, the turret was removed. The remaining space served as a perfect window for aerial reconnaissance.
Their approach was quite clear-cut: they would turn off the propellers and just glide through the air as they approached the base. Then the scout would take a photograph of the base’s facilities from the glass.
All these tasks are handled by High-peak people without the Advance Team’s intervention. Besides aerial reconnaissance, the transport planes’ other task was to deliver the Advance Team to the outskirts of the base, and then the Advance Team would cover Nightingale conducting her research in Weird Talk Forest.
There’s no denying that Shangguan Jiu truly invested her efforts. Within a few days, Luoya grasped the basic shooting technique, which proved her far more competent with firearms than Tangmo, who had been handling guns since childhood.
Of course, modern firearms compared to ancient crossbows are primarily easier to train with. Luoya got the basics of gun operation on the first day itself. The succeeding days were more focused on improving her shooting skills.
This time, Luoya was determined to accompany them. If all goes well, she plans to penetrate Theron via the contacts she has within, with Kroel’s pendant acting as her infiltration tool. Then, she will somehow make her way over to the God Creation base for a reconnaissance and infiltration operation.
They face off against the entire Ancient States during this operation. Even a minor slip could potentially bring the Ancient States’ army as reinforcement. In that case, it would truly be a scenario of utter hopelessness.
To be fair, ever since the Advance Team entered Otherworld, they seldom had numerical advantage in their operations. They have always been outnumbered. Most of the time, they were forced into a quick and aggressive style of combat, resulting in the enemy’s disarray. That strategy works for most troops, but for well-organized ones, it’s pretty much useless. Their tactics could be child’s play in front of Earth’s modern armies and could only be used in Otherworld at best.
After all the preparations, on the fifth day since Luo’er returned to the airship, they boarded the transport planes and flew towards the sky again. This time, only a single transport plane was prepared carrying the Advance Team members and Nightingale.
Nightingale’s mission this time was to conduct an on-the-ground investigation of the Weird Talk Forest, then return by transport plane to the airboat with the aid of the advance team. The advance team would stay put, preparing for the next phase of infiltration.
For this operation, Li Si gave Luoya an AK74U Short Assault Rifle. Based on the AKS74U, this type of 7.62-caliber short assault rifles were quite popular in Otherworld. It was considered one of Russia’s most successful export weapons, favored not only by the High-peak people but also by the people at headquarters, often provided to advance teams.
As the gun had been modified to a 7.62 caliber, the Russians named it the AKS762U - a 7.62 caliber short-barreled assault rifle. However, everyone was accustomed to the old name, so it continued to be called the AK74U.
The reason why the headquarters preferred arming the advance team with this rifle was mainly because the advance team was light infantry, and the gun was conveniently compact and easy-to-carry. In addition, they did not have to worry about ammo shortage, as the Otherworld market was flooded with 7.62X39 bullets.
The High-peak people’s preference for this firearm was due to the composition of their military power. The gun was ideal for use in narrow areas, aligning with their air force’s strong ground fire suppression, obviating the need for distant shots by their airstrike teams. This made it popular in Ronisca, to the point where the High-peak people got a production license to replicate the Bee Sting Rifle.
Theoretically, most of the troops in Ronisca were now equipped with Bee Sting Rifles. It was the advance team who carried the original AKS762U short assault rifles.
Even though the advance team was there to protect Nightingale, worried for her safety, Li Si provided her with a compact magic crystal pistol. This series of pistols had been refined for use through feedback from the advance team and constant redesign by the weapon research center. Though no bigger than the palm of a hand, its close-range firepower was equivalent to a 12-gauge shotgun.
This pistol, after being adjusted, could drain all the magic power stored within a thumb-sized magic crystal with a single shot, transforming it into a destructive spell with similar power to a third-level magic spell.
Considering she was going out, Nightingale took off the white coat she had been wearing for an unknown amount of time, removed her gold-rimmed round glasses and tied up her hair into a sleek and professional ponytail. Her overall temperament changed so drastically that Luo’er almost didn’t recognize her at first glance.
The transport plane was equipped with not only pilots and contact men but an airborne scout in the back, operating a bulky mechanical camera ready to take aerial photographs. This was a reconnaissance method used during World War One on Earth. Because all of Earth’s electronic devices would stop working in Otherworld, this was a necessary compromise.
As everyone boarded the transport plane, the pilot began to adjust the output power of the anti-gravity engine. The transport plane gradually climbed and, once it reached a few hundred meters off the ground, the propellers began to spin, pushing the plane towards its designated target.
Perhaps because it was her first time on a mission with the advance team, Nightingale was rather silent, not uttering a word and keeping her head down, rendering the entire cabin deathly quiet.
A High-peak reconnaissance soldier sat in the corner, fiddling with his hefty mechanical camera. Being relatively short, he looked like a child. Hu Daoke quite wanted to chat with him, but the guy only spoke Dwarven and couldn’t understand Tasta, much less Chinese.
Before the transport plane set off, Li Si had contacted the roaming Judgement Legion Cavalry, requesting them to raid the God Creation base to distract the enemy and facilitate reconnaissance. Under the pope’s order, Dina had no choice but to obey Li Si’s command, leading the Judgement Knights towards the God Creation base. Fortunately, their mission was merely to distract the enemy. By relying on the mobility of their horses, they could ensure their safety.
