Chapter 504: Chapter 497: Preparing for Attack
Under the control of the High-peak aircrew, the airboat slowly descended onto the lake in the middle of the forest. This area, usually devoid of human traces, rarely sees airboats from the north. Many accompanying figures shed tears as they all watched.
Originally, the Judgement Legion stationed here could easily be discovered by the Elf Race’s patrol team. But with the cooperation established with Ilanadale headquarters, they no longer have to worry about nearby Elf patrols rushing over upon hearing the news.
As the airboat gradually entered the water, the aircrew closed all passages at the bottom, adjusting the airboat’s attitude and gently landing it above the lake. In fact, there is a lot of intricate detail involved when an airboat is anchored in a lake, as the depth must be sufficient. Once touching the bottom, the airboat must continuously activate its anti-gravity engine to maintain balance, which ironically does not serve the purpose of anchoring for rest.
Moreover, when the airboat is standing on the water, it must meet a predetermined waterline. Otherwise, once the anti-gravity engine is turned off, the bottom of the airboat could easily be crushed by its own weight and the goods it carries.
So, theoretically, the airboat can fly in the sky, but it still needs to be anchored in water and thus cannot escape the category of water vessels.
According to estimates, the High-peak placed the airboat about a dozen meters from the lake shores, where the water depth barely meets the minimum depth of the draft line. Upon stabilizing the airboat, the High-peak aircrew opened the large doors on the side and began constructing a simple pontoon bridge using the wood stacked on the ship.
Judging by their proficient movements, it’s presumed that this has become routine work for them. Due to trade needs, airboats cannot always dock in standard parking pools, and sometimes they need to be docked in remote rivers and lakes. At such times, they need to build pontoon bridges for easy access. This is somewhat similar to Earth’s makeshift airports, but docking requirements for airboats are more demanding.
Seeing the High-peak begin laying the pontoon bridge, the knights of the Judgement Legion became excited, even urging the remaining attendants to help with the construction. With the help of these laborers, a sturdy pontoon bridge connecting the shore was quickly laid out.
As soon as the pontoon bridge was completed, the legion leaders of the Judgement Legion, Dina and Hillna, barely waited for Li Si and the others to disembark. Instead, they boarded the airboat with a few companions.
"Nice to see you after a long time, Legion leader!" Seeing the group come onboard, Li Si respectfully greeted them.
"It’s been a long time, Mr. Li Si!" Dina respectfully returned the greeting.
Hillna surveyed the reinforcements who had come and focused on the escapees of the vanguard, glaring at Luo’er with evident malice. She asked, "Where did you take Lord Kroel to?"
"Why are you asking me? Shouldn’t he be with you all?" Luo’er shrugged innocently, however, he was aghast at the query, thinking if he was caught red-handed after murdering Kroel.
However, it seemed that Hillna did not know about Luo’er’s misdeeds, she fixated on him and raised an eye-brow dubiously at his response.
"Hillna, how could Captain Luo’er possibly know about Lord Kroel’s whereabouts." Dina turned his head and reprimanded in a disciplining tone, seemingly aware of Hillna’s inappropriate behavior.
"Wait, did Lord Kroel go missing?" Li Si, oblivious of the vanguard’s deeds, expressed his surprise at Kroel’s disappearance.
"Sigh," Dina sighed, and then continued, "During the first attack, we had Lord Kroel break away from the encirclement so that he could rendezvous with us once we had dealt with Theron. However, we lost track of him. Furthermore, Theron was hot on our tails and we had no opportunity to look for Lord Kroel."
"May the god of light bless his soul." Li Si said, with a regretful look on his face.
"Looking at the current situation, it is highly likely that Lord Kroel has met with misfortune," said Dina, sighing deeply once again. "May the god of light bless his soul."
"Who is she?" Hillna noticed some unfamiliar faces in the advance team, thus she pointed at Luoya and asked.
"Who she is should be none of your concern. This is our advance team’s matter, when did it become your responsibility to worry." Facing Hillna’s disdainful look, Luo’er expressed his dissatisfaction angrily.
Perhaps because Luoya was also a Half-elf, when Hillna looked at her, her eyes were full of disgust, which was unacceptable to Luo’er. He could tolerate being discriminated against and bullied, but he could not tolerate people around him being discriminated against, especially his own sister, who was of the same blood as him.
"Hillna, be a little polite to the headquarter’s people, don’t be so arrogant!" Dina turned around, frowning and scolded.
Due to Kroel’s disappearance, Dina became the only person in charge of the Judgement Legion. Originally, he and Hillna were on the same level, but now they had become superior and subordinate.
With the Judgement Legion’s failed expedition and Kroel’s whereabouts unknown, Dina’s attitude towards Li Si and others had changed from disdain to respect. He knew that even if the mission was not completed, they would need Li Si and others’ help to go back, otherwise they could only take off their armor and disguise themselves to escape. This was a more severe punishment than death for them.
Hillna glanced at him, though unwilling, she still lowered her head and kept silent. Seeing her reaction, Cheng Ziang couldn’t help but sigh with relief. It was known that Luoya was short-tempered, and she was part of Theron’s people. It was very lucky that she didn’t fight with Hillna.
"The things you need have been delivered to you. Please send someone to pick them up!" said Li Si, pointing to the ship’s cabin.
"Thank you, Sir Li Si!" Dina nodded, then he called his followers to enter the ship’s cabin. Soon they carried out wooden boxes and carried them to the shore.
The group followed Dina and his men to the shore. The followers immediately opened the wooden boxes. It was only then that the members of the advance team noticed that inside the wooden boxes were beautifully crafted shields.
These were more than one-meter-tall shields, shield-shaped overall, with intricate runes engraved on the front, extending to the back. Luo’er noticed that high-density magic crystals were inlaid on the back of the shields.
If his guess was correct, these batch of shields should be Rune Shields, which had performed brilliantly in the Otherworld War over thirty years ago. The Rune Armor of the human knights could barely withstand the shots of light machine guns, while these Rune Shields could withstand attacks from armour-piercing weapons like rocket launchers.
When the Human Knights dismounted their horses, raised their shields and advanced, the multi-national forces of the Earth would be beaten into a rout by this equipment, without artillery they were helpless against them.
The main body of this shield was made of metal, but it didn’t appear to be traditional steel. Dina casually picked up one, it was quite handy in his hand, indicating that the weight of the shield was within an acceptable range.
In addition to the shields, the airboat also brought some Rune Armor and weapons. These weapons were entrusted to Li Si by the Church Court for replacement of the damaged weapons and equipment of the Judgment Legion.
In fact, the Judgement Legion lost in almost all their previous expeditions, but this time, the loss was indeed significant. Among the 500 elite Rune Knights, only one out of ten survived. This was a severe loss of combat power to the Church Court.
The reason why the Church Court sought the help of the headquarters this time was because the high-level officials of the Church, especially the Pope, had made up their mind to destroy the Creating God Plan of the Ancient States. So this expedition was different from usual - if the headquarters hadn’t volunteered to intervene in this operation, probably the airboat would be transporting not mercenaries and weapons but the Temple Knights of the Church.
They were still in Ilanadale, a distance away from the Ancient States, but Li Si had decided to use this place as the base of their operation. With the airboat steadily stopped on the lake, the structure of the back of the airboat unfolded, revealing a landing platform. Then two High-peak people’s anti-gravity transport planes were pulled to the parking platform, making preparations for transportation support.
