Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 497 - 490: Mobility Operations
Chapter 497: Chapter 490: Mobility Operations
"Wait, a transport plane!" Upon hearing this term, Hu Daoke’s eyes sparkled. When they mentioned transport planes in the Otherworld, they instinctively thought of the anti-gravitational propeller transport planes of the Ronisca Air Force.
When they had gone on a reconnaissance mission to Helros, they had once been in a skirmish with the Ronisca Air Force’s reconnaissance aircraft while piloting a transport plane. As a result, the Advance Team, who were no match for the fast-moving reconnaissance aircraft, were battered and plunged into a lake.
Therefore, at the thought of this, Hu Daoke immediately recalled this heart-stopping mission. What left the deepest impression on him was his machine gun falling into the lake and then being retrieved with the aid of the High-Peak people. They even had it delivered to their stronghold in Yazhi City.
"Yes, two Ronisca Air Force transport planes are parked in the hangar behind the airboat. They were borrowed specifically from Ronisca by the headquarters and even come with experienced High-Peak pilots." Li Si nodded in response.
"Now, this is what you call a special operations mission!" Upon hearing this, Cheng Ziang stroked his chin in satisfaction, nodding approvingly.
Though they held relatively advanced weapons, they could still only travel by horse power or on foot. The enemies they faced were primarily armed with cold weapons. Although there were many who used guns, their understanding of firearms was limited to pulling the trigger to fire bullets.
In modern warfare, special operations forces emphasize high mobility, like the U.S. Army’s 75th Rangers. With air transport, the mobility afforded during both assaults and retreats is unmatched by horseback.
According to the plan outlined by the headquarters, the airboat would serve as the command and logistic center for this special operation. For this plan, the headquarters drafted several sub-humans from the academy to ensure efficient communication and keep the information channel open and unobstructed.
In the Otherworld, communication primarily involves magic messengers and their derivative, magic messenger communicators. Communication of this kind is characterized by point-to-point connections. Earth’s radio communications operate on a broadcast basis where the transmitter sends signals to a specific channel which receivers can tap into, but also provides an opportunity for enemies to intercept the information.
Both magic messengers and their communicators, however, operate on a direct communication basis. Once A establishes communication with A1, the intelligence info relayed from A can only be received by A1 and not by anyone else like B, C, or D.
The advantage of this kind of communication is its strong confidentiality. Unless A1 is directly controlled, the enemy can never intercept the information transmitted by A. The disadvantage, however, is quite obvious. If anything happens to either A or A1, their communication breaks down entirely and there’s no mechanism for A to broadcast to B.
That’s why the Nightingale, who spends most of her time in the stronghold and rarely faces danger, is the primary reason she was chosen as the Advance Team’s communications officer. This ensures headquarters would not lose contact with the Advance Team.
However, it’s worth noting that although the people of the Otherworld have developed communicator devices based on magic messengers, these devices remain primitive, basically translating human effort into machine effort.
The communicator devices can still only transmit written messages and, in essence, are fax machines. Magic messengers can’t transmit voices and neither can communicator devices. As such, all of the High-Peak’s aircrafts are two-seaters, with one person acting as the pilot and the other responsible for typing out communications.
In addition to the Advance Team and the Judgement Legion, Li Si also brought an elite band of mercenaries. This veteran squad has repeatedly participated in Masya’s civil wars, earning considerable combat experience.
This legion is primarily composed of Blaiqi people. Due to their deep-rooted cooperation with the headquarters, their weaponry is quite advanced, rivaling those of Earth’s underdeveloped nations, let alone this Otherworld which has yet to step into the Industrial Age.
For the sake of impartiality, the airboat and the transport planes it carries were not supposed to directly join the operation. Therefore, Li Si couldn’t order the airboat carrying artillery to provide fire support for the Advance Team. However, they did bring a large amount of suppressive firepower, including rocket launchers and 107mm rocket launchers. The mercenary legion carried three lightweight field guns, capable of supporting the team with firepower within a two-kilometer range.
The headquarters attaches great importance to this operation, so the airboat, serving as the logistic center, carries a large amount of ammunition. Half of these ammunitions will be handed over to Ilanadale, and the rest constitutes the supplies for this operation.
When the airboat arrived in Divine Wood Down, its magic crystal fuel was almost exhausted. Luckily, there were crystal mines in Divine Wood Down and the Wood Elves possessed the ability to mine magic crystals. After refilling the fuel in Divine Wood Down, the airboat would set out again, heading south to the border.
"How much do you know about Theron, Sister Nightingale?" Luo’er couldn’t help but bring up this question.
"These fanatical believers, I don’t understand them fully. The Creating God Plan is led by the Ancient States’ Parliament. Theron is only responsible for the security of the plan, to prevent the Judgement Legion from causing problems." Nightingale sighed and said.
"If we plan to infiltrate the Ancient States, we are inevitably going to come into conflict with Theron. They are one of the strongest military forces in the Ancient States. I fear they might be our greatest obstacle," Cheng Ziang pondered.
"Um, indeed, we need to understand these people thoroughly," Luo’er nodded in agreement.
"Isn’t there an opportunity right before us?" Cheng Ziang said while looking at Luo’er, a teasing smile on his face.
"You mean, Luoya," Luo’er shook his head and then said, "No, that unfortunate girl is not from Theron. She wishes to join Theron, but Theron does not even acknowledge her."
"But, no matter how you look at it, she is probably the person among us who understands Theron the best," Cheng Ziang stated.
"You make a good point," Luo’er bent his head and after pondering for a moment, said, "I will question her a bit later, and see if we can get some information."
"You should have her come here, I feel like if the two of you get together, it will inevitably lead to a fight," Cheng Ziang worriedly said.
"Does Luo’er have a sister too?" Nightingale asked Luo’er with interest.
"Oh, forgot to mention it to you, Luo’er has a long-lost younger sister," Li Si added from the side.
"I don’t want you to tell me, I want Luo’er to tell me," Nightingale insisted, looking at Luo’er.
"Uh, she was born when our family split apart a few years after me," Luo’er seemed a little lost under Nightingale’s gaze. Fortunately, Tangmo was engrossed in the runes on the wall, or else there would surely be a disturbance.
"I can roughly imagine what she looks like," Nightingale said with a laugh.
"Hm-hmm," Li Si coughed to interrupt their conversation, then seriously said, "Anyways, everyone should go do what they need to do. You have until tomorrow, we leave the day after at the earliest. The sooner we finish our task, the sooner we can go home."
Li Si is the weakest link in this operation because he is a thoroughly Earthling, unable to withstand the Magic Power Erosion of the Otherworld. Although he has medication to suppress it, he can’t hold out for too long. The sooner the mission is accomplished, the sooner he can return to Earth to recuperate and rest.
The Headquarters are also urging them to take action as the Church Court continues to send people to supervise their timely collaboration with the Judgement Legion. According to their statements, the Judgement Legion has been stationed at the border for nearly two months now, living a life of scarcity, constantly harassed by Theron, and almost resorting to cannibalism.
The Airboat is going there this time to join them and provide them with supplies. Otherwise, these lordly knights may not survive.
After the plan was arranged, Li Si dismissed them so they could each prepare. Most of them didn’t have much to do, mainly Luo’er and Hu Daoke. Luo’er had finally found Nina, but due to various reasons, they had not had time to spend together, which was indeed a regret.
Luo’er has been thinking about resigning from the Headquarters after completing this mission and staying in Divine Wood Down to be with Nina. But whenever he thought about parting ways with his team, he found it hard to let go.
