Chapter 488: Chapter 481: Secret Maneuvers at Chen Cang
"So you think that your brother and father are the ones who dragged your mother down?" Cheng Ziang tentatively asked.
"What else could it be," Luoya sniffled, continuing, "They are enjoying themselves on Earth, while mother is waiting bitterly for them in this godforsaken place. I can’t even begin to imagine what mother went through while she was pregnant with me. If they weren’t going to come, they should’ve said so, instead of leaving her waiting in torment..."
"Luoya, your brother’s days on Earth weren’t easy either." After a pause, Cheng Ziang decided to defend Luo’er.
Luoya raised her head to glare at him, seemingly irritated by his siding with the enemy.
"After your father passed away, your brother’s situation on Earth was precarious. You know that this world discriminates against half-elves, but you have no idea how insane that world is about half-elves. If not for your grandfather, your brother might have been studied and turned into a specimen by now." Cheng Ziang said.
"What do you mean by a specimen?" Luoya asked, looking at him.
"It refers to preserving the body of a dead person or animal through treatment to prevent decomposition." Cheng Ziang briefly explained.
"How can this be..." Upon hearing his words, Luoya was genuinely taken aback. She lowered her head, murmuring to herself.
"Anyway, both you and your mother, your brother, and your father, all had your different misfortunes. The comment you just made was indeed a bit extreme. Fortunately, your brother is easy-going. Had you said that in front of your mother, I bet she would have slapped you right away, whereas your brother would have restrained himself." Cheng Ziang said.
"Is he really that good?" Luoya murmured, with her head lowered.
She knew Nina quite well. Despite Nina’s gentle and feeble appearance, she had persevered over these years due to her tenacity and indomitable spirit. Although Nina had never hit her since childhood, she wouldn’t believe that Nina couldn’t do it.
"Whether your brother is good or not, I believe the people you’ve met these days have already given you an answer. Let’s not talk about the Olavia Sisters who were mere acquaintances. Haven’t you noticed that Tangmo and Baiyue are so entangled because they are smitten by him?" Cheng Ziang said.
"He’s just a flirt." Luoya spoke indignantly.
"Many men want to be flirts but don’t have the ability. Do you know why those two girls are so clingy with your mother? Because Luo’er said that he would only consider a personal relationship after finding his mother." Cheng Ziang shrugged and said.
Despite saying that, Cheng Ziang thought that Luo’er would likely be unable to make a choice. Whichever he chose would hurt the other, so given his personality, he might keep dragging.
"Why do you all understand so much about my parents’ story?" After a long silence, Luoya couldn’t help but raise her head to ask.
"Because your brother told us." Cheng Ziang shrugged and replied as a matter of fact.
"Why does he tell you everything." Luoya looked at him, frowning.
"It’s not a big secret, there’s nothing wrong with telling," Cheng Ziang shrugged, going on, "It’s precisely because of your brother’s frankness that we understand his persistence. Do you know that when your brother was still on Earth, your mother was his only hope for life."
Luoya didn’t respond. Her gaze dimmed a bit before she lowered her head again, falling silent. Cheng Ziang sighed, saying, "Looking at the two of you right now, I think you will argue again if you meet. You should quit contacting each other for the time being. I’ll transfer any message if needed."
Luoya was looking down, seeming lost in thought. As Cheng Ziang was about to take her away, she abruptly raised her head, asking guardedly, "Why are you so concerned about what happens between us? Do you have any ulterior motives towards me?"
Cheng Ziang nearly burst out laughing at her suspicion. He shook his head, explaining with a smile, "You’re overthinking it. I’m going through all this trouble purely for your brother. Like I said, Luo’er is well-liked, and not just by women, also by men, like me for example."
As he talked, he could not help evaluating Luoya. Despite her tall stature, she was still much shorter than him. As a Wood Elf hybrid, Luoya perfectly inherited her mother’s exquisite looks and well-proportioned figure, maintaining a beautiful, slender posture. She always seemed to have a frown on her face, but Cheng Ziang had always thought that if she could smile, she would be absolutely stunning.
"Why are you staring at me?" Seemingly aware of his gaze, Luoya instinctively took a step back, crossing her arms defensively and asked.
"Oh no, that’s not it. I just think that, at a glance, you’re quite pretty." Cheng Ziang coughed, relieving the awkwardness considerably.
"Gross! Who asked for your opinion?" Luoya said, her eyebrows furrowed in disgust.
She turned her face away, feeling a surge of warmth rushing to her face. Her ears started to heat up unintentionally.
This was likely the first time a male of the same age complimented her beauty. Although she had experienced it before, it was usually from the little brats in the village. She hadn’t interacted with many boys her age.
"I’m heading home. Don’t you dare follow me." After a long silence, Luoya hastily covered her face, then turned around and left in a hurry.
"Can I come to find you when you’ve cooled down?" Cheng Ziang yelled from behind her.
"Do whatever you want!" Luoya said irritably, storming off.
Watching her hurriedly leaving, Cheng Ziang inexplicably felt a sense of joy from the bottom of his heart. It was a feeling he hadn’t experienced in a long time. He couldn’t recall the last time he felt such a fluttering sensation in his heart.
Just as he stepped into the room, he bumped into Hu Daoke. Hu Daoke took a step back and glared at him. "You’re no different from that girl, blindly rushing through the door."
"What are you talking about? How could I be anything like her?" The mere mention of Luoya brought a smile to Cheng Ziang’s face.
"Well, aren’t you a sneaky one, arriving openly but covertly seeking personal gain." Hu Daoke pointed at him accusatorily.
"What nonsense are you saying? Did you take the wrong medicine?" Cheng Ziang asked while looking at him.
"Stop pretending, I see through you. On the surface, you’re just helping the boss and the Luoya siblings resolve their issues, but in reality, you’re trying to win over the boss’s sister!" Hu Daoke exclaimed aloud.
"Keep your voice down, don’t let Luo’er hear you." Cheng Ziang glared at him, his tone laced with annoyance.
"I already heard." Luo’er said helplessly, seated on the bed.
"Wow, boss, look at this guy, he’s got ulterior motives!" Hu Daoke pointed at Cheng Ziang, loudly complaining.
"Look at my state. Do I look like I can control Luoya?" Luo’er spread his hands out, speaking in a resigned tone.
"Don’t listen to his nonsense, I’m just trying to solve the issues for you." Cheng Ziang grabbed Hu Daoke’s ear, tossed him out of the room, and then started to explain.
"I know..." Luo’er said, looking at him.
Cheng Ziang wasn’t sure if it was his imagination, but the look Luo’er gave him seemed filled with melancholy, as if he had done something to let him down. Even though Luo’er said he didn’t care, deep down, Cheng Ziang did care.
"I think the conflict between you two mostly stems from a lack of communication. If you guys could have a good talk, I bet this trouble would be resolved." Cheng Ziang wiped the grease off his hands and came in to speak.
"If we could have a good talk, we wouldn’t be in this mess." Luo’er said, shaking his head inadvertently.
He did indeed want to have a good talk with Luoya. However, their second conversation ended in failure. The first time he didn’t know her identity, but after learning she was his younger sister, Luo’er slipped into the roles of being a protective older brother and tried to restrain her. But the independent Luoya detested any form of restraint most.
The main reason Cheng Ziang was able to communicate with Luoya was that Luoya was Luo’er’s sister, not his. Before he knew Luoya’s identity, Luo’er was able to communicate with her.
