Otherworld Advance Team
Chapter 441 - 434: An Expected Attack

Chapter 441: Chapter 434: An Expected Attack

About three days later, the team finally left the grasslands and entered the primeval forest.

Compared to the primeval forests in the north, the forests in the south can be truly called primeval forests. Looking around, towering trees everywhere, easily three to four stories high. Even though it was winter, the leaves remained evergreen, casting a dense shadow over the ground. Even though it was a path, the surface was piled high with thick layers of dead branches and fallen leaves. Walking on it oddly felt like walking on a soft mattress.

Since it was winter, it wasn’t as sweltering as summer here. But there were numerous mosquitoes buzzing around them incessantly. Luckily, the Advance Team was well-prepared. They had brought Wind Oil Essence and Floral Dew to protect their bare skin from mosquito bites.

But the followers of the Judgement Legion were not so fortunate. Many of them were severely bitten by mosquitoes, itching and scratching as they went.

From the time they set out, there had been non-combat-related casualties in the Judgement Legion. Mostly, it was the followers who died, and they were carelessly discarded by the road by the Judgement Legion.

Luo’er had no fondness for these men. Every time the aristocrats of the Judgement Legion got up to mischief, these men were always there to assist. Rather than being forcibly involved, they were much more willing participants.

Luo’er would never forget the woman who had been burned to death and the decapitated body left by the roadside. His various experiences told him that the people in the Judgement Legion must die; otherwise, their conscience would be tortured and blinded.

However, since the Advance Team hadn’t seized the opportunity to deal with them yet, they had to let it be. Plus, once they left the territory of Saint Basaya, the Judgement Legion did become quite disciplined, likely because they were worried their improper conduct would be treated as hostile by outsiders.

Despite this, Luo’er always wanted to get rid of the people in the Judgement Legion. Particularly the Judge Kroel. This man was said to be the source of the Judgement Legion’s sins, with nearly 90% of their misdeeds related to him. He was indeed a man of infamy.

Maddened by the relentless mosquito attacks, Luo’er and his companions finally chose to stop riding and instead huddled inside the chariot. The exterior of this chariot was engraved with simple physical Defense Runes. It had a certain bulletproof capability, providing more safety than riding on horses.

According to Luo’er and Cheng Ziang’s estimates, the Judgement Legion would surely be attacked; them not getting attacked would be almost impossible. They wondered what the three higher-ups of the Judgement Legion were thinking. They chose the same route to attack the Ancient States. Luo’er always felt that this was no different from seeking death.

"We’re still within the territory of Ilanadale. If we move forward another ten kilometers or so, we’ll be at an ancient village. That place may prove to be an ambush spot for Theron, so everyone must be very careful." Inside the chariot, Luo’er looked at everyone and spoke earnestly.

"Is something going to happen?" Olavia looked at Hu Daoke, worry showing in her eyes.

"No worries, no matter what happens, as long as you listen to us, you’ll be safe." Hu Daoke turned his head and spoke softly.

"Oh, then you need to protect me!" Olavia looked into his eyes, her cheeks blushing involuntarily.

Everyone else glanced away, somewhat embarrassed. If it were only Luo’er and Tangmo acting this way, it would have been fine, but now Hu Daoke was also in the mix. Cheng Ziang felt this must be some divine punishment.

"I have a feeling that they won’t launch an ambush within the territory of the Ancient States, but are more likely to take action directly within Ilanadale." After a moment of silence, Cheng Ziang, frowning, voiced his guess.

"Why do you say that?" Luo’er asked.

"You’re the commander, don’t you see? This place is the perfect ambush spot. There’s primeval forest everywhere. The attackers can use the forest as cover and launch a sudden attack on the Judgement Legion." Cheng Ziang explained his guess.

"Makes sense!" Luo’er nodded in agreement.

"I have a bad feeling. I think we’ve already walked into a trap." Cheng Ziang frowned, expressing his concern.

"Do you think that the Theron is now lying in wait for us?" asked Luo’er.

"Luo’er, could you trust me this time, and have everyone ready to run at the first sign of attack?" Cheng Ziang looked at him and asked.

"Hmm..." Luo’er thought for a moment, then said seriously, "Understood, you will command us for today!"

"Thank you!" Cheng Ziang nodded, then turned to Hu Daoke and ordered, "Old Hu, go tell the driver to slow down, so we gradually lose contact with the Judgement Legion."

"What’s the reason?" Hu Daoke asked confusedly.

"If I were the one initiating the ambush, I would first attack the head and tail of this long, straight formation. This would throw the people in the middle into chaos and then launch a fierce attack." Cheng Ziang explained solemnly.

"You mean..." Hu Daoke exclaimed as he realized Cheng Ziang’s strategy.

"That’s right, if we get too close to the Judgement Legion, we might become the target of their first strike." Cheng Ziang said.

"Aye, I’m going to tell the coachman to slow down a bit!" Hu Daoke nodded and then got up to communicate with the coachman.

"Everyone be prepared to abandon the carriage and travel on foot. We might not be able to ride horses, so it’s best to have everything on us." Cheng Ziang continued to command.

"Understood!" Everyone nodded in response.

Stirred by Cheng Ziang, everyone felt as if they were on the brink of a great battle, with an impending sense of imminent attack. Cheng Ziang himself was not entirely convinced of his intuition, but he always felt a sense of unknown unease at the bottom of his heart.

These were not fictional scenarios made up by him, but conclusions he derived from his past experiences. A variety of pieces of evidence proved that the Judgement Legion was very likely to be ambushed soon.

Things seemed to be progressing as he predicted. Just when the Advance Team was prepared and the carriage was slowly distancing itself from the Judgement Legion, Cheng Ziang suddenly felt a numbing sensation in his heart, as if a sudden rush of electric current had passed through. Following this, a deafening explosion erupted in the close distance.

Just like the thunder before a rainstorm, the aftermath of the explosion just brushed every individual. Then came sporadic gunfire. Bullets pelted the carriage like raindrops, fortunately repelled by defense runes. The passengers inside the carriage could only hear sounds like firecrackers exploding.

The Advance Team’s carriage was not simple. Its shell was a compound armor from Earth, capable of easily resisting small-caliber bullets. With defense runes engraved via laser, it had the ability to repel medium caliber bullets. Thus, the barrage of bullets hitting it could only rebound, unable to penetrate the armor.

When the explosion occurred, the horses pulling the carriage were clearly frightened. Everyone felt the carriage shake. But immediately after, the carriage came to a halt and the commotion outside ceased abruptly. Obviously, the horses and the coachman were killed by the barrage of bullets.

"Everyone stay calm and retreat as planned!" Cheng Ziang said as he peeked through the curtain.

Looking through the bulletproof window, he saw several attackers slowly emerging from the roadside, gradually approaching the carriage.

These people were dressed in an array of outfits, with branches and leaves as camouflage. They wore minimal armor and mostly held firearms in their hands. All signs indicated that this could be Theron’s gang attacking the Advance Team.

"It’s Theron, everyone prepare to evacuate!" Cheng Ziang made a direct conclusion and instructed everyone to prepare.

"There are some here too!" Luo’er quietly opened the curtain, then said softly.

Despite being in the Otherworld, the carriage still followed Earth’s traffic rules, traveling on the right side of the road. So if they need to retreat, the quickest route would be to the right, easily darting into the primeval forest.

These attackers probably believed that their weapons had completely wiped out the people in the carriage, thus they could confidently surround them.

"How do we get out?" Hu Daoke crouched by the door, covering the trembling mouth of Olavia, and asked them.

Luo’er didn’t speak, but took a flash bang from his pocket and waved it in front of Cheng Ziang. Understanding the intent, Cheng Ziang casually took another flash bang from Hu Daoke’s waist, then gently pulled the pin. Following this, the two slowly pushed open the bulletproof window, revealing a gap for the flash bang to be tossed out.

"Prepare!" Luo’er instructed, pointing at his own ear.

At his signal, everyone quickly plugged their ears with noise-canceling earplugs. The Olavia Sisters were also given earplugs.

Once everything was ready, the attackers gradually approached the carriage. Luo’er and Cheng Ziang threw the two flash bangs out of the window, which fell next to the carriage wheels.

"Bang Bang!"

As two deafening explosions rang out, a fierce light erupted outside the carriage. Luo’er unblocked his ears and shouted to Hu Daoke, "Little Ke, now’s the time!"

"Understood!" Hu Daoke nodded, then let go of Olavia, picked up the submachine gun, kicked the carriage door open, and rushed out.

As soon as he landed, the sound of his gun firing rang out from outside. Tangmo and Baiyue followed closely, standing next to him and launching attacks on the assailants. The Advance Team’s firepower had been tremendously enhanced. Tangmo used magic to attack the assailants, while Baiyue was firing at the enemies with a 74U short assault rifle.

Next was Luo’er, who stepped off the carriage, lifting his gun as he motioned for Cheng Ziang to help the Olavia Sisters down. Outside the carriage, the horses that pulled the carriage and the coachman were already dead. The horses tied behind the carriage were all killed as well, it seemed these people understood the principle of shooting the horse before the rider.
